That fact that this got him into NYADA but not his iconic performance of boy next door will never cease to baffle me. Don’t get me wrong, both are good, but boy next door was the perfect fit for his voice
I think Maddame Tibido’s point was that boy next door was just that, a performance, but with being alive she got to see his raw soul and talent stripped down. It’s more true to who he really is.
The reason NTBND didn’t get him into NYADA is because no one was ever allowed to outshine Rachel, even if they deserved it. Kurt had something great in his life, his dreams were coming true, but could he enjoy it? No, because heaven forbid Rachel actually let anyone else have a moment. Instead of him having the spot he obviously earned judging by Carmen’s comments at his original audition, they backtracked and made it all about Rachel yet again getting what she wanted. And yes I am still bitter about this. Kurt is my favorite character on Glee and he deserved a lot better than what he got.
If I remember well he wanted to give more feelings to his performance, not just making everyone know how well he could sing, because Woopy Goldberg, who is a teacher at Nyada, told him that he was a great performer but without heart, soul.
@@au_barb that's because it was a retcon used to justify Kurt not getting in with Not The Boy Next Door...the writers needed an excuse why something previously lauded as "nailing an audition" and also being 'worthy of praise from the man (Hugh Jackman) who made it a hit' -to- the BS excuse they came up with...it didn't work
@@au_barb if you want more on how I feel about this check out my comment in the Rick Rolled. Thread comment I think the worst of this is Kurt/Chris has this talent to emote it is his gift. While I think Rachel/Lea is a phenom I dont feel anything when I watch her perform. When we are supposed to believe NYADA is a Performing Arts College specializing in Music Theater and I get Lea is Funny Girl right now I still rather see a play with Kurt or Chris in my mind better suited for such a school. She should have stuck with Juilliard or found a Conservatory like Oberlin
As someone who’s a huge broadway fan and loves Being Alive I really enjoy Chris’ version. Its not the best ever, but it’s a good cover and a faithful version. It’s restrained and emotive just as it should be. Sometimes less is more and that’s what I always appreciate about Kurt performances. He always puts emotion into them.
I believe he was one of the few that came in with singing ability. He acts his song and I really like his voice. I haven't actually seen this performance as like you I came to Glee so I haven't actually seen the show as such.
his solo from season 5, "I'm still here", has more of those modulations/movements you were talking about, you should check that one out!! In this scene he was supposed to be giving a more understated performance for a particular plot point that I won't spoil, so that's why he wasn't moving much haha!!
Chris Colfer is a counter tenor. I love this, but I think his performance of "The Boy Next Door" was better. My favorite is his slowed down version of "I Want to Hold Your Hand". Speaking of counter tenors, Alex Newell as "Unique" deserves a reaction. In an audition on The Glee Project, Alex sang "I Am Telling You" from Dreamgirls and hit a high note at the end I had never heard from any of the ladies I've heard sing the song. As for the ladies, I prefer Amber Riley to Lea.
I think it is on purpose that there are not a lot of belt in there and its focus more on emotion, because it was all about allowing himslf to be vulnerable and emotional while singin, and not about showing technique or impressive strength, like Rachel does.
This is my all time favorite glee song!! It’s so good and it’s a side of his voice that was underused. With the jaw tension thing, I see him do it a lot, even as he improves. So I wonder if it was a personal choice. If you want a song that he really goes off on, check out I’m Still Here!
@@moreandmore7962 Yes, I'm talking about during the filming, hon. Another comment above mentioned he doesn't sound like he does it while recording, I actually c&p my reply from there. Sorry for not being clear! 🙂
@@au_barb he has a condition called vertical maxillary deficiency. basically a very short length between your nose and top teeth. the opposite issue is when people show excess gum when they smile.
One of his best performances. His first NYADA audition was Not the Boy Next Door and Carmen praised it and his bold choice of song. In this because she'd told him that his polished performances lacked feeling, Rachel reminded him of when he sang I Want to Hold Your Hand for his dad and told him to choose something more personal, so he sang this one that had been his mother's favorite song. This one got him into NYADA. Ironically, Being Alive is a song Carmen had stated was one of the the usual safe choices for auditions.
I think for this scene they actually made him sang like that cause he's supposed to be extremely nervous since it was a surprise performance... you'll see it.
Interesting I hate how Lea sings with the over exaggerated Broadway style. Whereas I love the less movement from Chris. I feel like I can connect with Chris when he sings, he makes me feel. Whereas Lea just seems to be so technical it’s rare that I feel I can connect to her songs. The only one I can really listen to is This Time. Definitely a personal preference thing.
Same I literally love every song he sings. I didn’t even know people even thought they wanted more from him. He always makes me fall in love with him every time he sings. I hate hearing Lea sing bc I always just feel obligated to grade her and give her an A. She’s just extra af and I don’t care for it at all . But when Kurt sings I actually feel something and not someone just belting and showing me their tonsils like Lea.
This song makes me cry no matter who sings it. I do wish he had put a little more oomph into this performance but otherwise it was great. I really enjoy when he gets to perform songs written for male artists. Obviously his high notes are amazing but I feel like he has a much more full and powerful sound in his lower range.
Love your channel, and LOVE Glee! A little TRIVIA that you might/might not know: Chris Colfer (Kurt) initially auditioned for the role of "Artie". Ryan Murphy was so impressed with audition and Chris, that he created the role of "Kurt Hummel" exclusively for Chris Colfer.

You are correct. Spoilers below… Because this was one a surprise audition and two his second or third try he went more reserved because the last time Karman said he was too showy though honestly he should have gotten in on his first try especially since Rachel one got a second chance and two picked don’t stop believing as her song. It was kinda dumb and I thought it would have been more interesting with their roles reversed.

She reacted to it in her patreon. She pointed out his head shaking when hitting a belt and him swallowing to reset his vocal cords a lot, (makes sense as he doesn’t sing as much as before so he’s probably out of practice) but admitted to being very picky and thought it was a very impressive performance and loved his deeper voice.
I'm also not a fan of his voice but I Want to Hold Your Hand and Blackbird are in my top 20. This one is also pretty good, but I think he did better with the other two.

Okay. I like your comments. I am not sure that he ever took any formal singing training. Never remember reading anything about it. Since, his back ground is not Broadway he would not instinctively know what to do. I would love to see him perform live. It would be get if he could get some training before hand since he has wide range vocally.
I think it was more of a personal choice than not knowing it was a possibility because he did the dropped-jaw thing she mentioned in the show before and after this song with other numbers. Plus it’s seems like a very obvious singing technique, something he definitely would have learned by s4 if he didn’t know before, and there were vocal coaches on set to help out if needed.

I think this happens when they force his low tone he cannot reach the climax as in other songs like “not the boy next door” or “as if we never say goodbye”
It's hard to compare Lea and Groff to Cory and Kurt when Lea and Groff have classically training for YEARS. Cory and Colfer do not have that classical training nor were they ever on Broadway.
You know, I always felt like he really was belting more in the studio, and his lip sync on camera just didn't match up? Like if I'm JUST listening it sounds more open, but the visual doesn't really align, like "Chris honey shouldn't your mouth be more open?"
Yeah, that’s my exact thought. I listen to the song way more than I watch the episode, and it always sounded like his jaw was more open. He had the aliiiooooove sound, which is a mark for the open jaw, and not the alliiivvvvveeee sound, which is more in touch with the slightly closed jaw and less space.
