    As a sailor for 30 years, I'd highly recommend rounded corners and fiddles for hand holds. I wouldn't fancy falling on the sharp corner of a production boat.
    As a woodworker for 20 years, I'd recommend picking one (or two) radius corners so you can production line out woodwork fiddles. Thanks for a great Video!!!

    I used to work for Boston Whaler I learned so much. Doe to Boston harbor clean-up I poke around old ship building an found lots of small hulls 16 to 18 ft. all was going to be destroyed in the clean-up. Took 4 home setup in garage and brought em to life, new rig, trailers , teak trim, sails and sold them out front. Lots of work, kids helped. I'm telling you this because all the work your doing is will be worth every hour, tears ,cuts and bumps.. Kudos to Jessica and the better man ~~ Carry-on

    Matt, you constantly amaze me with your ability to visualize compound cuts, etc. kind of designing on the move, and seeing what the finished product will look like, function like, and in general what the whole boat interior will be when you finally finish this beauty. And I'd be remiss not to say how impressed I am with your beautiful helpmate, Jessica. When you two found each other, it was pure karma. Love both of you.

    I binges watched the first bunch of episodes of your build five months ago and I though ro myself that is a huge undertaking they are going to bebusy for three years or more... I came back today and binged the last five months and I was thinking that you two have made impossible seem quick and very possible. Maybe six more months until splash.. Congratulations on the seemingly impossible progress.

    Very nice. For this type of planning out what you want it to look like 3d CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) is very helpful. That way, you can fully mockup the space with carboard that can be cut on the spot with scissors.

    Not sure if these would be in the way or work in the space you have but the builders laser levels that put a simple horizontal and vertical line measured from a square bulkhead could save some measuring, put the line where it needs to go use a marker (or chalk) to draw it then you just line the joinery to the line and final measure. This was how the plumber did the bathroom furniture and builder installed the kitchen cabinets (builder used pencil, plumber used chalk). I know you have a horizontal laser you used in the salon area.
    Same for the toilet both sit on the bucket in differing directions and use the laser to find the "space gap" you are trying to visualize to the cabinet then you can draw a line put up some board or whatever to fill out the space based on the lines and confirm it still works for you both.
    One idea I saw on a yacht in a small space is they had the toilet square to the wall but the bench space went straight over it to the wall. When the toilet was to be used the bench hinged up and latched vertically giving you access to the toilet and when latched down bench space for clothes, towels, toiletries etc for getting ready to go out or whatever. Just another idea as your bench space looked minimal as you need a sink and tap so more and a straight line may be nice, it gives you less below bench cabinet but more bench space.

  • @glenpeters955
    @glenpeters955 2 года назад

    Regarding your cupboards I would suggest thinking about what you want to store in them as a way of determining their design.
    With the toilet is there any way that the base of the toilet can be molded into the inner hull. In other words can you cut out a small section of the inner hull to allow for better positioning of the toilet, it would make little difference to the hull form but make a huge improvement to your bathroom.

    A plan is a good thing. I think it is worth the time and effort to jump ahead make sure your infrastructure works with your final design. No fun having a toilet in the middle of the kitchen because a major structural bulkhead is in the way of putting where you wanted it. Stay healthy and we'll see you next week.

    Shaping the edge's of such complex areas are very time consuming as we just watched Matt preform perfectly. The final fit is guess work. My past builds I used this tool. If you have scrap sheet metal glue a piece of 40 grit longboard paper to it, make a stick handle and insert it under bulkheads. Pull it out and move over a bit, do again. Makes life easier too.

    For the interior surfaces think about laminates as coverings, the Italians make some great real wood prefinished selections for flat surfaces and the best part is you glue it down with water based inflammable contact cement, trim it with a router and it's done, for the counters go with a solid like Corian which you can do yourself and because it's boat and you don't need huge pieces you can usually get great deals from distributors that have remnants for more than half off but you have to visit the warehouse, also look at paper backed wood veneers which are easy on non-compound round surfaces, for finishing use a big peanut sponge for stain and a painting pad for the urethane, painting pads are great for catalyzed acrylic boat paints, much better finish than a brush or roller on large flat surfaces.

    Wow, this video really helped make it clearer what the interior will look like when the extra interior parts get installed. The work you did near the shower was another example of how your ability to see things in your mind, cut the pieces with the tools you have available, and then put them into place. Great job on explaining what you did and why you did it in the order that you did them. It helps us non-boaters understand how one action impacts one or more things down the road.

    Great video; although progress does appear very slow here; would be good to show how you are you doing compared to the project plan timing. "Cool" here means pretentious btw; Dr. Suess teaches one heck of a common-sense lesson in the Sneeches. Mind you I had a buddy years ago that pinned Lord to his credit card; Chinese girls went nuts for it. These strengthing additions make me wonder about the flex that has to be designed into your catamaran, and won't this impact finished cabinetry that will arrive at some point? Finish work is the hardest part - and arguably the more important for enjoyment and resale; you're are only halfway done when the hull is done - usually.

Some others are just ideas, and we'll have to see how they pan out down the road. 🙂

    Hey guys! recently found u. Like your vids, and all build my own boat stuff ! amazing idea.
    Question: maybe u already covered it (saw only few videos yet), I imagine you bought a boat design blueprints to build it, but it seems, by this video, that u have to figure out interior stuff yourselves? wasn't all this in blueprints?
    P.S. as an architect myself, I would suggests to do a project with dimensions and 3D renders, would be cheaper than redo stuff multiple times :) paper is much cheaper than building materials :)

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  2 года назад

      Yes, you do get blueprints and a nice instruction manual when you purchase this kit. But because we're building ourselves and not buying a production version, we have the ability to make changes - which is one of the things we love about doing this project. We can customize it to be exactly what we want. One of the things we're thinking of doing, which prompted the layout of salon furniture, is to remove a floor to ceiling cabinet by the entrance to the master berth. We're willing to sacrifice that storage space in order to gain more light (instead of having that window covered) and give more of an open feel to that section of the hull. 🙂

    IMHO your initial design depth of cabinetry in bathroom/shower/head is way too big/deep....I would want as much room as possible, start by facing the inside of the hull standing as close to wall/hull with your toes an inch from the hull - this should be your starting reference. From there work out the sink area, bench surface, for my mind the bathroom cabinet doesn’t need to be deep. Same goes with the continued shelf/bench in the shower. I totally agree with increasing the doorway dimensions and toilet position.
    Hope you find the right balance that works for you, cheers

      We had to change it as well as Max Cruise, because once things began being placed, we found out there is not enough room in the forward portion for the toilet due to the molded shower pan. If it were to stay there, a person would be left with no arm room for, uh, wiping.

    What made you change the layout from Max to move the loo aft? Larger shower space?

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  2 года назад +1

      Max Cruise did the same on the production version. The original toilet location worked in theory, but once put in place, they found the dimensions seemed to tight for space around the toilet and the shower. I think we would have still put it there if we didn't have the molded shower pan supplied by Max Cruise. With it, the shower's aft edge was defined and we would have had to straddle that beam to use the toilet. -Matt

      @@MJSailing Well that doesn't help a lot. I've looked for a retailer but found no joy. It appears that it's only sold to distributors who only sell to businesses. I guess I'll have to mix up some thickened epoxy with lots of chopped strand in it as a second rate substitute.

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  2 года назад

      Plexus is available all over at the retail level. But it's easily triple the price to buy it in the tube vs 5 gallon buckets. It's worth it to get a LLC for the business discounts everywhere... We save on everything gor the boat with it.

      There's going to be a hydraulic trailer that will back into the tent and the bridge deck portion of the catamaran will rest on it as it is hauled into the work yard to be blocked before launch. 🙂

      There are agencies who reach out to channels, and based on companies they are working with, there might be a few who are trying to push specific sales at certain times of the year, which is why you'd see them come up across multiple channels.
