  • This quick video shows how to set a skein of handspun yarn with steam. Although I love this technique for some handspun, I still prefer to wet set my yarn. Wool, in particular, tends to shrink/spring up once the twist is set (some breeds more than others!), and steaming will lock in the fibers and straighten any over-spun or kinked pieces. However, it won't really address the shrinking part. A good wet set is always best. Still, this is a really cool fast & satisfying technique that every spinner should have the knowledge of.

    About me:
I am a self-taught maker, spinning yarn for 12 years, but I have been creating my entire adult life. These days my items are produced in my home studio in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, Canada.
My learning style is to - jump in there and figure it out - most of the time with limited knowledge. I like to have some personal experience with a skill before honing it or learning to do it “the proper” way.
I hope my personal experiences help you on your creative journey. They may or may not resonate, but if they inspire or help spark creativity, that is the goal.
