    That's really clever using the diamond stone as a flat surface for the sandpaper!

    I love the woodworking shows on tv and have puttered with woodworking for decades. I love the look and the feel of wood, but usually my projects don't get finished cause I get frustrated with tools that don't seem to work for me.... I've been watching all of your sharpening stuff and now I know why they don't work for me and how to cure that. You sir, are my new hero! Maybe now I'll get to finish those projects I've wanted to do for so long

    I set a lazy day and used your tip on my chisels. 50/50 solution worked great better than the window cleaner i was using. Thanks for sharing. Great video

    man Allan! here it is 12:49am and I want to go out to my shop and sharpen my old kobalt capenter chisels lol Since I'm in the process of waiting for a custom piece's stain to cure and therefore my shop is not usable at the moment, I'm going to spruce up my cheap kobalt chisels tomorrow! thanks for inspiring me! Also, I wanted to throw out there that putting your wet dry paper on your table saw top and taping it down with some blue tape works great! thanks for the videos.

    Woodman,
    Stumpy,
    If using spray adhesive or self-stick sandpaper, when the sandpaper is used up and no longer good, how does one remove it (and clean old glue) from surface in order to apply new sandpaper?
    Also, do you use anything besides simple green to lubricate the sandpaper? Thanks for the feedback and awesome videos.

    • @SFGRAYSON
      @SFGRAYSON 2 года назад

      I don’t know about self-stick sandpaper but for spray adhesive, vinyl dye remover works very well. At work we use a lot of 3M spray so the remover is essential to keep the tools clean.

    How does the stone/paper wrap stick so nicely to the table without sliding around when you use it?

  • @AskWoodMan
    @AskWoodMan  11 лет назад

    Are you asking about the bevel angle. If so the general most common angle is 25deg, but there are others both higher and lower depending on the tool. But for most chisels and plane irons 25 will serve you well.

  • @jpmorso3798

    when u wrap the wet/dry sandpaper around the stone I seen it doesn't go all the way around the stone and only 1/8 inch or around the other side leaving the middle un supported underneath thus leaving it uneven???? or what ???? wud it be better if when u wrap the stone with sandpaper if it would meet up in the middle of the bottom of stone so its totally equal and sits flat. please let me know thanks oh yea I enjoyed ur videos also and debating to buy a vise from u which I like very much

      The paper meeting on the bottom has no effect on what is happening on top. I am not going to waste more paper than I have to so I just tuck enough to hold it in place. I try to use paper as little as possible because compared to diamond stones it just wears out too fast.

    Why not just use the diamond stone rather than the wet-dry? I'm new to sharpening and lapping tools so I'm just curious why not lap the back with the diamond plate? Thanks for the vid

    Having sharp tools is a key to woodworking success. Since I made this series I invented a sharpening jig that now makes the process about a third the time and gives me even more superior edges. All the info in this series is still valid but now I just use this new jig. I have lots of detailed videos of using it on this channel and also at my tool company VerySuperCool Tools. VSCTools. com Thanks for the kind comment and keep in touch. Allan

    @sarelle500gr Hello in Turkey. Yes Matador is good paper. I also like VSM wet/dry and 3M makes very long lasting heavy wet/dry paper that works really well in the very course grits. It will be in one of the later videos.

      The diamond stone is sitting on top of the granite. There is a clear plexiglass stone retainer that keeps the stone from sliding.

    What is your formula for the Simple Green sharpening lubrication? I assume it is Simple Green and Water. Thanks.

    • @AskWoodMan
      @AskWoodMan  9 лет назад +1

      Just a 50/50 mix of water and simple green. Amazingly this does not promote rust even with half water. One note about SG, it will oxidize aluminum if not wiped of with water.

  • @arncj18
    @arncj18 8 лет назад

    fantastic job.
    i don't think i'll be able to get a hold of that green cutting liquid where i'm at. What do you recommend as an alternative home made fluid?
    edit: i think i have some dishwasher that comes really close to what SG is.
    So i need to cleanse with water, not just dry wipe with cloth at the end? Also what do you recommend to protect the aluminium after sanding of some road bike parts (stems, seat post etc.)

    • @AskWoodMan
      @AskWoodMan  8 лет назад

      +arncj18 I don't have an alternative recommendation other than for you to search for water based cutting fluids available where you are. I stumbled upon my 50/50 Simple Green water mix because I noticed the cutting fluid I had been using Relton Option 1 smelled a lot like Simple Green so I started experimenting. And at 1/20th the price the experiment was a success. I don't wipe anything after using it. I have not seen it promote rust even on cast iron. But Simple Green is not compatible with aluminum. It will leave a cloudy oxidized mark if not cleaned away. But steel is no problem. To seal your aluminum bike parts just use a clear spray enamel. Here in the US I use Rust-o-leum brand. It comes in a spray can (rattle can). The industrial way to treat aluminum is by anodizing. But that is not cost effective for one off bike parts.

    • @arncj18
      @arncj18 8 лет назад +1

      AskWoodMan Thanks. On the other hand .For steel as a sealer to protect it from rust. what kind of product you recommend if i want to keep it's "mirror finish" appearance. I made a bike stand from water pipes, sanded them and it would be a pitty to paint them black .. cos it has almost an aluminium polished aspect to it
      edit: i'm not sure if it's steel though, it might be iron or something else.... they were old painted water pipes

    Simple Green All Purpose Cleaner is biodegradable non toxic cleaning product that I discovered when cut half and half with water makes a fantastic cutting fluid that does not promote rust. I am constantly using it on my cast iron drill press and have never wiped it down and no rust. Oil is a poor cutting fluid, it is a lubricant that creates a sliding space. There are water based cutting fluids like Relton Option 1 that work great, but my mix cost 1/20th. Home Depot carries SG gallons.

      Simple Green also seems to be a good way to clean up the sandpaper. Spray it on, rub it in a bit, and then run under warm water. It seems to work.

    The 50/50 water/Simple Green as a cutting fluid looks interesting and certainly seems to work well. However, as far as I can tell it does make the water rust-proof. If I am wrong and the Simple Green does provide complete rust inhibiting when added to the water then please let me know!
    Otherwise I suggest looking at the Bora Tools cutting fluid product which goes by the product name Bora Honerite Gold. It is expensive for a 250ml bottle but it goes a long way since one adds only 40ml of this fluid to 960ml of tap water to get one liter of rust inhibiting cutting fluid that can be used with diamond plates, water stones, wet/dry sandpaper, etc.

    • @stevenmarkward
      @stevenmarkward 7 лет назад

      Oops, I meant to say above "However, as far as I can tell it does NOT make the water rust-proof."
      Also, the Honerite Gold will work with both ferrous and non-ferrous metals and is safe for use with alumimum.

    • @AskWoodMan
      @AskWoodMan  7 лет назад

      I am not as much interested in the rust proof properties as I am the higher specific gravity of the the SG mix and water. The mix does an excellent job of holding the cut particles in suspension compared to water. Rust is not an issue. I am happy with the performance and price of the SG mix. If what you are using performs well for you that is good.
