    On October 3, 2013, over 360 migrants drowned in the Mediterranean Sea after their boat capsized near the island of Lampedusa. The geographical proximity of Lampedusa to the north coast of Africa has caused it to become one of Europe's gateways for migrants, who each week arrive in Italy by sea in droves.
    The majority of the migrants are fleeing war in Syria and Eritrea's repressive regime in search of a better life. But unscrupulous traffickers and unsafe vessels often lead to many not surviving the journey. And under current European immigration laws, those who succeed in reaching Italian shores often end up stuck there.
    In the first half of 2014, over 63,000 migrants arrived at Italy's shores. Of those attempting to make the deadly journey to Europe, over 3,000 migrants have drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean, according to the International Organization for Migration.
    VICE News headed to Lampedusa one year after the disaster and visited the centers that house large numbers of migrants in overcrowded and makeshift living conditions.

You must give me specific evidence. Also there were wars in Africa before the Europeans went to Africa. There were slaves in Africa before the Europeans went to Africa. Also the modern day Italians were not the ones who conquered north Africa. They should not be punished for their ancestors mistakes. There was poverty‚ war‚ disease‚ slavery‚ etc. in Africa before the Europeans went to Africa. How about you take some of these immigrants into your house. Also please enlighten me on these books. Also I have detected a sense of racism in your comment. Also I am not European. I am an American.

    What you can do Italy is, buy about 50 or so American made drones and have them patrol the waters off your coast and off the coast of Africa identifying these boats before they get within 50 miles of your nations waters. Then you send out coast guard ships to escort the them back to the country of origin and confiscate the boat they were traveling on and have it scrapped.

    why does Italy owe them food and lodging? I am sure there are Italian homeless or struggling Italian citizens who don't get any help and go hungry and sick. If u take the risk to make it to Europe, take care of yourself and assume the risks. Save some money to get around to accomplish the goals you set out for or don't come at all.

    • @oparisleclerc
      @oparisleclerc 10 лет назад +7

      Can you stop and think for a second how "the government" helps everyone? Where does the money come from? It comes from robbing the middle class and turning them into destitute serfs to the state by taxing the living hell out of the fruits of their labor. Is that what you call help? Destroying innocent hardworking people's lives by robbing them of their hard earned income and letting a government be in charge of distributing the money inefficiently to everyone. That's not help, that's robbery. If you want to help, volunteer your help and put your money where your mouth is but don't assume it's okay for a government to rob its citizens of their hard earned money.

    • @oparisleclerc
      @oparisleclerc 10 лет назад +3

      The income tax still kills the middle class living paycheck to paycheck. If you as an individual or as a private organization choose to put your money where your mouth is, feel free to help, but it's wrong to count on the gov to divert resources taken by force from their citizens to people who did not chip in the system.

    • @oparisleclerc
      @oparisleclerc 10 лет назад +4

      Yes taxes can do that and nothing will be left for the primary needs of citizens if the money is given to non citizens who don't participate in the system. Needs of non citizens need to be funded voluntarily by donations of people.

    Why they get in Italy? Why they think that Italian government is supposed to help them?

    • @Foc4ccin4
      @Foc4ccin4 9 лет назад +2

      Alex Ponyatenko Because Italy's most southern isle Lampedusa is used like a bridge, once they arrive to lampedusa they wish they can reach the mainland of sicily/italy to then go north and cross the borders. But they can't do it if they don't have an european id, which means they're stuck in italy for years. Also France, Austria and Switzerland closed their borders recently.
      Europe thinks that they "help" Italy, by sending to us money which then we need to use for the immigrants, but all Italy needs is that Europe does one of the two possible things:
      1-They make illegal immigration a crime and (A-You send back people immediately or B-Shoot boats, which is inhuman, so I'd suggest a european patrol on libyan/tunisian coasts. But again Libya has 2 governements....)
      2-Europe opens their borders completely and every country would have 2000-3000 immigrants per year, which can is a easy to handle situation, compared to what Italy faces (100k + immigrants per year)
      This second solution though might be risky: opening completely the borders might result in a much bigger influx of immigrants.
      Italy is on the brink of nationalism, I'm telling you. Fascim and racism might come back, and I'm not even fascist/racist, but the situation with no share of burden is too much for a single nation to handle.

    • @Foc4ccin4
      @Foc4ccin4 9 лет назад +2

      Alex Ponyatenko
      It's european's laws. The problem is that lybia has 2 governments and siding with one means having problems with the other in terms of cooperation. Also it costs a lot. Operation Mare nostrum costed 9 millions each month, now europe has to share the load. Or else Italy will rescue these people and drop them on nortern countries like they do to us.
      It's not only Italy that has these immigration laws. But the whole europe. I think Italy should be like Australia, kicking off illegal immigrants. Some of them may come from warn torn areas like syria (why they come to italy and they don't go to saudi arabia is a mistery..), but most of them do it for economical reasons. I don't blame them, but Italy is not and should not be just a cow to be milked for free. (leftist say that immigrants bring more money in terms of taxes, I doubt that and I doubt that what they say about them taking jobs which italians are unwilling to do is bullshit, they work without paying taxes, most of them.)

    • @alexp3712
      @alexp3712 9 лет назад

      Foc4ccin4
      Yeah, but you still spend money on military. So if you do so, why not to USE ARMY???
      And 9 million per month to keem illegals away from Europe? Come on, this is NOTHING. Even if it was 90 million - still too small money to talk about.
      I don't think that there any European laws. Which law says, that Italy must take refugees and illegal migrants? I don't think this law exists.
      Of course leftists are wrong, as always! italy has unemployment and it is not so small. So Italian people don't have job. It means that there is NO deficite in labor force. No migrants are necessary, especially from Africa.

    • @Foc4ccin4
      @Foc4ccin4 9 лет назад

      90 million seems nothing to you? It's almost 1/10 billion where i live. that's not nothing.
      Also you don't use the army because Italy is not aiming at killing them, but rescuing them so it sends ship with rescue stuff on. Would you shoot at innocent civilians just because they are illegal immigrants?

    • @alexp3712
      @alexp3712 9 лет назад +1

      Foc4ccin4
      That's maybe, 0.1% of Italian budget. So its nothing.
      One can use army to find ships with illegals before they get to Italian shores. Find them, put the guns on them. After that - interrogate them and bring back to Africa.
      Also, there must be a clear warning for a future, that Italy will respond on this african invasion and will NEVER accept any illegal migrant.

    Thousands of Eritreans Face Torture and Death as They Flee Despotic Rule? These are not the voices of the downtrodden and desperate. @kernowoggie 9 лет назад +2

      +Somali king None of these people are wanted or welcome in the UK. This latest tide of immigration is like an invasion. It threatens the stability of our country and our standard of living. Only yesterday I read of an African woman have £143,000.00 worth of medical treatment (from the NHS) that should could not pay for, so needless to add the British tax payer has had to foot the bill. She came to the UK specifically for the treatment, nothing else. I have worked all my life and (like many others) worry that I may never get a pension because all the money will be gone. The UK cannot support the whole world.

    • @kernowoggie
      @kernowoggie 9 лет назад +3

      +Paul Overton That's really horrific. People who are to be deported should be detained and not allowed to roam free so they can commit such atrocities. All European countries are under threat and what we are witnessing is an invasion not immigration. It's a threat to our way of life, our values, customs and beliefs. Some immigration can be good but what we are seeing now is uncontrolled and our political leaders are unprepared and are not dealing with the root of the problem. The immigrants will keep coming as long as our leaders don't stop them.

    • @kernowoggie

    Italy is in no shape to deal with this, it has it's own debt issues and the economy is in the crapper, and it's government is not to the most efficient. The rest of Europe is dealing with their own immigration problems. The logical thing is to improve the situation in their own nations. That's never going to happen. I don't see a way out.

    This isn't Italy's problem, anymore than it is Europes problem. Following WW2 many African nations decided they wanted independence and rid themselves of what they considered to be wicked European imperialism. In the years that have followed we have seen famines, pandemics, political corruption, economies crash, white flight etc. as most of these nations have failed and are simply basket cases. Now they look to Europe for a better life, with housing, medical care, education and social security all funded by the European tax payer.

    I think these migrants need to learn to organize themselves and clean the place up. Take your own responsibility and learn to fend for yourselves. Not like Europe is El dorado currently. Everyone has problems in Italy. I suggest the Italian government to hire some older migrants who are more integrated with the society to train these newly arrived migrants with useful skills like the Italian language & culture, organizational skills, cleanliness and hygiene etc. The system should be designed such that they are provided food and shelter in exchange for training and a couple of working hours.

      ***** nobody owes these people anything, European countries were built on ethnic homogenity, and for a thousand years thats how its been more or less after the ethnic movements after the Roman empire. Nobody fucking wants these people in their countries, even in America, after 150 years they still can't seem to fucking figure out how not to steal, kill, and cause disruptions. Italy isn't even like America, nor is the EU. They don't have to let these people in because their countries aren't built on immigration, they are a cohesive group. Just because we feel bad for people doesn't mean we're somehow forced to provide for them. Sometimes we have to make hard decisions, and without enough jobs to go around for their own people, a dwindling aging population, and many Italians going abroad (my family) the country is being torn apart from within. Someone needs to save it from itself. One of the greatest countries the world has ever seen is suffering from its own doing. It shouldn't have to suffer anymore. Sadly, if the government doesn't take care of these people (send them back where they came from) the mob will. Ethnicity is important, especially in countries where much of their cultural, and state identity comes from tradition and language. As soon as that is taken away Italy will cease to be Italy, nobody wants that. Italy needs their government to start making decisions that benefit their great country. Where is renzi? Its their country, leave your pretentious, pointlessly progressive asscrack of a brain out of problems that aren't solved by helping everyone. Sometimes to save a county, you have to get rid of the people who are there ILLEGALLY might I add. Just a tip, its really not that hard to use simply words, you look like less of a douchy stupid hipster.

    I am so torn... while I understand the plight of the migrants in wanting better, I feel like they are being unrealistic and might I say ungreatful. They need to realize that there are thousands of migrants who are flooding the country; with hundreds coming in daily, and that resources whether financial or human, are not limitless. I sympathize with them regarding their lack of freedom as it pertains to moving on to other places, but they must recognize that it could have been worse. They could still be in their country suffering, they could have died on their way to Italy. They could have been sent back. Take it one day at a time. Be thankful for small mercies ! If anyone disagrees it's fine, I respect your view. I don't want an argument.
