I think that Dashiell Hammett gave the best explanation as to why people don't want to know if they are wrong: "Nobody thinks clearly, no matter what they pretend. Thinking’s a dizzy business, a matter of catching as many of those foggy glimpses as you can and fitting them together the best you can. That’s why people hang on so tight to their opinions; because, compared to the haphazard way in which they’re arrived at, even the goofiest opinion seems wonderfully clear, sane, and self evident. And if you let it get away from you, then you’ve got to dive back into that foggy muddle to wrangle yourself out another to take its place."
That's well said. As someone who abandoned an entire way of thinking, I an tell you that it is a daunting task putting Humpty back together again, and finding your way into a better methodology for figuring things out. ***** I am so sorry Tom. I can see that you spent a lot of time writing about the end times. But that wasn't what I asked. I asked, "Why do you believe that?' Why do you believe the bible and not some other book? Were you raised Christian? And if you were raised in Pakistan which religion do you think you would believe. I'm curious.
***** You're yelling again. I can see you're not a 'we didn't land on the moon' conspiracy theorist, but you don't have to scream. It's not that exciting because we haven't done anything like it in 40 years. In reading between the lines, you say that you believe that the Bible is the Word of God, right? But you can't bring yourself to say, "Why you believe it is the word of God?" In Islam, the Koran is the holy word of God, in Judaism, the Torah is the sacred word of God, and to the Hindu's the Vedas, the Tibetans has their Book of Life, the Egyptians had their Book of the Dead, etc. Focus. Can you tell me why you believe that the Bible is the word of God and the others aren't? I suspect that it is only because you were raised up in it. I'll add another question too. Do you believe that every word is true? If not, How do you decide which ones aren't? This will be my last post if you can't manage a straight answer. Personally I think it scares you to try to think about why you believe things.
+Tom 4Jesus Its been over 2000 years of "coming soon" and still no show. It was supposed to happen on specific dates spouted by preachers who believed as much as you do years ago yet here we are. As for so called 'prophesies' in the bible. These prophesies are so vague that anything thing can be read into them. Famine and war? Seriously? These have been going on somewhere on the planet for thousands of years. So to predict war or famine is nothing special as it is generally quite inevitable. Then the so called 'signs' of the end such as a 'blood moon' is just a natural phenomenon easily explained without the bible's involvement (hint it is just the moon passing behind the earth with sunlight being filtered though our atmosphere turning it red - basically the same as any sunset or sunrise). Please don't cite the bible as a source as it is not a reliable source of information - it is well established by respected biblical scholars that the new testament was written long after the alleged death of Jesus, so long past that accounting for the average life span of a person during those times was about 27-33 years old that the books of the new testament were not written by any witnesses to the events. And given that the average lifespan of a human in that time period Jesus dying at 33 is not unexpected - he was probably considered middle aged but on his last legs anyway. Whilst your belief is clearly strong (particularly your belief that copy and pasting the same comments over and over is somehow the way to have an intelligent debate with other people) - I actually take pity on you for how your mind has been stunted so badly that reason and evidence are no longer part of your life.
Brian, you're a funny guy! Hey, you know that Fleetwood Mac song - _I Don't Want To Know_? They should make a hymn of that for all churches (except that of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or course).
+Kelly or Richard Weddle - I thought I was feeling the holy spirit once, because they told me I'd "feel a burning in my bosom". Turned out to be acid re-flux. :-/
Your tight edits are perfection. Well, as far as people who love comedy or a clever phrase enjoy enormously. Feel free to quote me, therugbutnz guy said" hehe hehe hehe".
When a fellow true believing Christian dies why do other true believing Christians morn? Shouldn't they rejoice and be happy that their brethren is actually in a better place? I contend that they morn because just below the surface they know that what they profess to believe is not true.
"There's a warm feeling inside like Kenny and Billy talked about. It's amAzing!" I feel like that when watch Mash reruns. Weird. Also 6 down thumbs? That's one of the best ratios I've ever seen. Not enough religious people are watching Mr. D.
Oh no, too much love here Mr D. Only 2 dislikes and no argumentative comments so far. You've either converted nearly all of the divinely deluded or you've scared them away with well reasoned arguments and logical thinking, the theists Kryptonite.
+Faith-is-abdication- of-Reason You didn't read down very far. Apparently he is trying to make a new religion out of science. A new cult of Science??? Well maybe at least they will use Pharmaceutical Grade Cyanide in their Kool Aid Someone should tell him that Scientism is already a thing, maybe he dosen't get out much.
+Bungalo Bill - Uh no, I think I read them all and nobody's comment I saw in this section called for a Religion of Science. He who? That was Mr. D's previous video topic. And that nut job religion you referred to is called Scientology, made up by science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard and it is based on science fiction, alien overlords and such, whereas the other religions are just based on fantasy fiction, you know, magic, witches, zombies Etc. But you're sort of right, it would be a much better world if all the religious nuts would drink their Kool Aid and stop dragging society backward.
+Faith-is-abdication- of-Reason And you have now found out one of those who thumb it down. Apparently Bungalo Bill does not want to know if he is wrong.
This reminded me of a little statue that we had when I was a kid. You probably know the one I'm thinking of Brian. It had three monkeys. Hear no evil see no evil speak no evil. When I was really little I didn't question it. When I got older I realized it was an excuse for all sorts of things. Somebody says something about your faith? Cover your ears and close your eyes, literally if necessary. Brian just made several body slams of points in this video and you should... Fingers in ears and la la la. That's only part of the problem though. The speak no evil part can be the worst part. You know that someone did something really wrong and the cops should be notified? Pray about it but speak no evil. I wish I were kidding about that. There are people who should be in jail right now and people in their family's and churches who should make police reports but they won't do it because these close minded people think that reporting such things would be speaking evil. Well, they start of like that but quickly learn that having dirt on someone gives them a lot of power. Those are some powerful memories. Thanks for the flashback Brian.
You're wrong in this very specific way: it's objectively true that you should have ended that epic rational poetry with a scene of you dropping an actual microphone.
I like darkness but only in art... As to reality: radical (non-critical) thinking (or rather existence) provides to darkness... All sh@t happens when people think and analyze too little.
I need to hear the opposite argument. I don't think it will cause me to change my mind but it's always important to know your enemy and I know of a couple of science folk who I struggle to understand who are strongly religious.
+Ian Kath What argument is the opposite argument? WOTM? The science folk you struggle to understand, who might be very confused and failing to understand, if they actually are religious?
+Ian Kath Religious people will typically say that religion and science answer to different questions, and there is no conflict between them. Science: how Religion: why
+Ian Kath Want to hear the opposite argument? Go to any kind of religious service. They will tell you what you have to think and how you have to behive (specially when naked) besides that you are, for the mere fact of being born, a bad person unless you adhere to their belief. It is a no-brainer really.
There are quite a few people who think that science and religion are compatible -- that you can, for instance, believe in God and Evolution, etc... Those people deal with the findings and whether you can make them compatible. I find that irrelevant, which is why I've focused on the values of each. That's the real question. Because in the real world, science and religion are no longer competing when it comes to the facts. Religion lost that argument centuries ago, as virtually every claim in the Biblical literature was proved either false, or simply silly. So the question now is, which set of values make the world a better place to live. On that question, I don't think there's a battle at all. Especially if you live in the secular West and have even the slightest bit of education regarding the world religion created when it had the power to make the world in its image.
+thecrowe20 No, religion is based on faith while science is based on evidence. And since faith is believing without any evidence they will forever be separated.
I think if religion remains consistent with its methodology and values, that would be very difficult. Not that people will not try or have not already.
I saw something on "the news" the other day that I think you should talk about. I say that in quotes because the show is run like a news show but is not so subtlety run by Christians. Anyway in this show they claimed that "scientists" which I question are real scientists had examined an original copy of the Bible "proving" that parts of the Bible that talk about the persecution of Jews were written over hundreds of years before those events actually took place, basically "proving" that the bible predicted the future. Now of course since the source is a known Christian news show I question any of this being true especially the part about the original copy of the bible. The "reporter" claimed that it was hand written as an original Bible would be since no typewriters or anything like that existed back then. However, correct me if I'm wrong but even the discovery of such a Bible would be incredible by itself. Forget weather or not it actually predicted the future or whatever, but I was under the impression that paper that old would be dust by now and so the original copy of the Bible has been lost to time. I'd like to know how they discovered this so called "original bible" in the first place and how it has been preserved to still be readable today. In case you're wandering what "news" show I'm talking about it's called the 700 Club. Every reporter on the show is a Christian, they only talk about Christian news, they're constantly talking about praying to God or the miracles of God. Plus they're so unreliable with their news that even their own people don't trust them. I know several Christians who change the channel whenever the 700 Club comes on which confuses me. I know why I don't like that show but I don't understand why they turn away from it. By the way, the only reason I was watching it this time is only because we couldn't find the remote. Plus even if I could find the remote I wasn't at my house so if she wanted to watch that stupid show I'm basically stuck with it till she decides to change it.
@@misterdeity gotcha! Thanks for the info. Also, i absolutely LOVE your channel! Seriously, keep up the great work. You're a big influence. Ill finally be able to support you via patreon, albeit not as much as id like, but just as my way of showing that i love your channel. Oh, and your begging segments obviously
Mr D., why do I get the feeling that, even though you are certain that man walked on the moon, you have doubts that a man walked on water... you go so far as mocking the proven fact that bouncing bare breasts cause the movements of the earth's crust. That's why the question: "*did the earth move for you too?*" is so popular, all over the world. But if you're going to talk about ham, why not Bacon? Indeed Bacon brought light and science to the world through its own trinity. Ham is of darkness.
Because this is what science has become and what scientist do these days....wait, that is after your evidence is published, reviewed, etc: "I'm wrong I want to know just show me where and how and whatever reasons and evidence you bring my way I will consider them thoroughly and with respect." Science nobly, backed by evidence and respect for the truth, shines the light on truth, whenever and wherever presented...prove that please first and then I'll take your humble opinion.
Nice level of delusion there. The evidence is in every scientific discovery ever made and how it's often been used to enhance our existence through technological application.
Eh... Didn't he proved that with a crowd of scientists applauding some of their fellas admitting their error ? And, if you want to know how and when scientists subject themselves to criticism, well, I would say... All other the place ? I mean, the only science papers that are published in journals are those who passed peer review, all the universities are constantly throwing new facts at each other heads, but they still work together (whereas when churches do that, they end up forming schisms). The fact that we can communicate thanks to their use of the scientific method is in and off itself a proof that they still do that.
Not mortal enemies. Religion can work together with science, as long as the science does not conflict with their beliefs. Even fundamentalist Christians can do good research in specific scientific fields that they don't have a heavy faith-based bias towards, like chemistry and agriculture, for example. Just because you reject several large areas of science doesn't mean you reject Science as a whole. Science is not like one monolithic authoritarian faith where you have to accept absolutely EVERYTHING or else you are automatically "anti-science". That's the beauty of the scientific method. It always finds a way to work somewhere, somehow, whatever your belief system.
" Religion can work together with science, as long as the science does not conflict with their beliefs. " Which is merely saying if science will obey it will not be killed. It's like saying the mafia isn't the mortal enemy of a police investigator because he can investigate a murder, as long as he doesn't suspect their hitmen.
Except that science does not even "obey" itself. Social science hasn't had anywhere near the same success story as the natural sciences, despite also trying to use "the scientific method". It turns out that there are as many different scientific methods as there are scientific disciplines. If you reject one discipline and accept another, that doesn't make you any less of a scientist if you are regarded as a competent expert in your field. The definition of "what science is" itself gets more complicated as you move closer to the cutting edge. Are you more or less of a scientist if you accept String Theory, for instance? If you accept the existence of parallel universes? There is no hard, physical evidence for the existence of such things - which would fail the classical definition of science - only deep mathematics and human intuition. Accepting religion by faith is also a case of human intuition. Accepting SCIENCE is also a case of human intuition. For why should you accept reason and evidence as being above the gods if it didn't seem intuitively "right" to you (particularly when there may also be a malevolent trickster that is deliberately forging this evidence to lead you away from the truth)?
You concept of what Science means/is/does is off the wall. Intuition plays no part in any Science, there is only facts, proofs, etc.. I can use my Intuition with a formula and go about using various equations in an attempt to justify my "intuition", if the answer is 4 and I hoped it would be 37, then my intuition, no matter how strongly I felt about it, is crap.
at some point i just started hearing "blah blah blah" there is no more scientific evidence that god does not exist as there is that he does. you can beat this horse all you want it wont walk any further. at some point people are either going to believe or they are not but what does it serve you to carry on anymore about this? maybe you are merely trying to convince yourself which is what i did too! i went from total belief to total doubt and still have no more answers today that when i started. thats how it will be for all humanity no matter what you tell them.
+adriano lehman you remind me of the newly born again who also now have all the answers! they go forth and proclaim their all knowing they just knew yesterday and shoot down everyone else who has not come to believe like they have! would you have listened to your own debates when you were a devout believer? didnt you have to learn and wake on your own before you could accept the knowledge you now posses and preach! yes preach! the religions in and of themselves are simple guidelines to live with basic tenants like love your neighbor everyone can agree on its the other man manipulated dogma that ruins its all but that does not mean it all has to be ignored. having had my own beliefs shattered on my quest for knowledge and understand i see how this has effected you and your attitude but no more will bill maher end organized religion will you!
+adriano lehman It is actually you that "remind me of the newly born again who also now have all the answers". First I think your a bit broad with your brush when you talk of evidence for god(s). You imagine that because the god of philosophy, the human concept of a personal deity, the deist god, a placeholder for explanations for the unknown remains un-falsified( because by definition it is essentially un-falsifiable) , that deities described in all of these holy books, are just as un-falsifiable scientifically or otherwise . This is simply not true., Did the Christian god Create the earth in six days as described in the bible, is the earth flat ,canopied with water, obviously NO! So that particular god, as described, has evidence against its existence. All of the scientific findings that run contrary to the biblical description of that god's behavior and nature are scientific evidences that it does not exist. Is it a logical thing the Christian god? Can it be omni-benevolent whilst it wantonly murders, can it be omni-potent whilst be unable to defeat armies with iron chariots, can it make a rock too heavy for it to lift. Is the trinity a logical concept. No the christian god is not logical, its description is illogical and such things do not exist in the real world. Even if you say well it all metaphor etc, I'd say so what! What technique is being used to distinguish metaphor from literal, typically it is where some literature is obviously inconsistent with reality or itself, in other words where the evidence leads to falsification. Metaphor leaves such descriptions of god(s) as having no real world meaning, you are just back to the deist position on god. Which is fine by the way, you don't behead, or act prejudicially toward people because you have no idea what god is or wants. Which brings me onto ... Second: Real world harm is done by religions and the religious . If you think you have a better strategy for stopping this than ridicule , go for it , but don't waste your time reprimanding those who do employ it . Nothing about what you've said here will lead anyone to question their faith, in fact I would say on the whole you would have bolstered a believers belief in their position . Well done , own goal.
religion has no method of operation that does not require a person to become the vehicle...surprisingly madness does not single out the religious! people will justify their acts any way they can religion is just one more of the tools in the arsenal...and there are those who do embrace a christ like behavior and attitude who have never heard the name christ in their lives. its the people! it will always be the people who are the problem.

***** Must be awful to be so frightened or simple that you can't answer basic questions about what you believe. I can do that. You have my sympathy.
You know everything Brian!
Absolutely spot on!
Brian, you're a funny guy! Hey, you know that Fleetwood Mac song - _I Don't Want To Know_? They should make a hymn of that for all churches (except that of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or course).
That's funny!!!
misterdeity It's good to amuse as you well know. :-)
Science has error-correction, but religion uses error amplification. As time goes on, each and every religion becomes increasingly more wrong.
to defend a lie, you gotta tell ten more lies. repeat till you have a Vatican.
"they took my magic underwear".lol
Brilliantly articulated as usual. The 'witness of the holy spirit' is simply wishful thinking plus intestinal gaseousness.
+Kelly or Richard Weddle - I thought I was feeling the holy spirit once, because they told me I'd "feel a burning in my bosom". Turned out to be acid re-flux. :-/

Love you, man.
Such well planned out sketches. Very nice, you must get tired of hearing that all the time. Very educational too. Do one on trump
I never get tired of that.
Spot on! Lovvved it
"That is arrogance on steroids." Nice.
Great video.
Your tight edits are perfection. Well, as far as people who love comedy or a clever phrase enjoy enormously.
Feel free to quote me, therugbutnz guy said" hehe hehe hehe".
Thanks! I will absolutely quote you.
I prefer the She/He/It (or SHIt for short)
When a fellow true believing Christian dies why do other true believing Christians morn? Shouldn't they rejoice and be happy that their brethren is actually in a better place?
I contend that they morn because just below the surface they know that what they profess to believe is not true.
"There's a warm feeling inside like Kenny and Billy talked about. It's amAzing!" I feel like that when watch Mash reruns. Weird. Also 6 down thumbs? That's one of the best ratios I've ever seen. Not enough religious people are watching Mr. D.
Paul
l feel you.
The 4077, is as comfy as home. Who wouldn't want BJ as a big brother or Father M to help mull over the world?
I'd just like to inform you: 9 months later and still at 6 dislikes.
@@jem-jams 2 years later and still only 6 dislikes :D
Oh no, too much love here Mr D. Only 2 dislikes and no argumentative comments so far. You've either converted nearly all of the divinely deluded or you've scared them away with well reasoned arguments and logical thinking, the theists Kryptonite.
+Faith-is-abdication- of-Reason You didn't read down very far. Apparently he is trying to make a new religion out of science. A new cult of Science???
Well maybe at least they will use Pharmaceutical Grade Cyanide in their Kool Aid
Someone should tell him that Scientism is already a thing, maybe he dosen't get out much.
+Faith-is-abdication- of-Reason Oh Contraire!! Just Google Scientism.
+Faith-is-abdication- of-Reason And you have now found out one of those who thumb it down. Apparently Bungalo Bill does not want to know if he is wrong.
+Alessandro B Nope, I didn't thumb it at all, up or down. One of my fingers might have something to say though.
I nominate Brian for the new fourth horseman.
You can’t argue with a neurotic. Willian Lame Craig is a neurotic. Therefore, you can’t argue with Willian Lame Craig.

I like darkness but only in art... As to reality: radical (non-critical) thinking (or rather existence) provides to darkness... All sh@t happens when people think and analyze too little.
Maybe both Ken Ham and William Lane Craig feel a "burning in the bosom," that is the witness of the Holy Spirit. (sarcasm)
What is the witness of the spirit? How do you find out what it is?
If the Amish were allowed to have computers, you'd be getting a ton of hate mail! ;^)
You made me LOL!!!! That's very funny!

I get the jungle fever from time to time... Does that make me a lover of darkness?
+Clayton εжз Nah, that'd be, as they say amongst themselves, "Dawkness"

Xuncu In his defense, Dawkins did not know Miss Garrison was transgender. When he found out he left it.
Do you think Science will ever become a religion in itself? Or would that change the term 'religion' entirely?
+thecrowe20 science and religion are 0% compatible. Hence, science cannot become a religion.
+thecrowe20 No, religion is based on faith while science is based on evidence. And since faith is believing without any evidence they will forever be separated.
Infinite numbers of universes out there! That means an infinite number of science religions! We're your even Doctor Pope, Scientist Supreme.
+thecrowe20 - No. Scientology is not science.
I think if religion remains consistent with its methodology and values, that would be very difficult. Not that people will not try or have not already.
woah
Plus even if I could find the remote I wasn't at my house so if she wanted to watch that stupid show I'm basically stuck with it till she decides to change it.
you need more subs, im gonna tell my friends! well, i would if i had any...

You made me LOL with this comment!!!
Which is merely saying if science will obey it will not be killed.
+adriano lehman
It is actually you that "remind me of the newly born again who also now have all the answers".
This is simply not true.,
Did the Christian god Create the earth in six days as described in the bible, is the earth flat ,canopied with water, obviously NO!
Well done , own goal.
um what? did you say something?
you seriously believe 16 lines of personal opinion has swayed people to believe more? lol you give me so much credit
religion has no method of operation that does not require a person to become the vehicle...surprisingly madness does not single out the religious! people will justify their acts any way they can religion is just one more of the tools in the arsenal...and there are those who do embrace a christ like behavior and attitude who have never heard the name christ in their lives. its the people! it will always be the people who are the problem.
