  • Charley Hoover and I present behind the scenes footage shot by me on Super 8 film from the set of The Color Purple. Speilberg shot the movie just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina in 1985 and my mom took me to see the set when I was a kid. I also have the EXACT scene they shot at the end of the super 8 footage!

kool footage. one small detail i noticed. the truck that drove by in the foreground after she was slapped didn't use a transmission differential but looks like they might have used a belt system to transfer power from the engine to the rear wheels. just like before brake shoes and drums, a pulley cord was used to stop the vehicle. nice touch and attention to detail Mr Spielberg

I was an extra in that scene, so was my cousin Marion Holloway (now a Monroe City Councilman). The Mayor was played by NC Highway Patrol Sargent Phillip Strong. He also played the Governor of Mississippi in a later film shot in Monroe, about Medgar Evers. I think Spielberg himself shot from the crane toward the end of the scene; it was the last shot we did that day. In the final print, that was the shot at the end of the scene, from the "God's Eye View".

Read the book about 15 times and saw the movie at least that many times. The movie was so like the book except for the later relationship with Mister.

I'm from Marshville NC. I was 13 at the time and lived about a mile from town. I would ride my bike to town and watch them film. I saw Spielberg, Goldberg, Winfrey, Glover and many others. I was there the day this footage was shot. Can't see me but I had friends playing extras in the movie. I'll never forget watching them make it snow in the middle of the summer. Really amazing. Everyone wearing all those thick close and it was hotter than hell. I was on my bike in my t-shirt and shorts....lol Great times. I'm 49 now and still live in Union County. Thanks for showing this. Brings back a lot of memories.

@@heavenbailey1886 If you are talking about "Apple Jacks" store being your great-grandparents (Sid Earp) I knew them very well. My grandparents went there every week to get their produce and I would go with them when I was a kid. Vera Griffin sounds familiar but there are a lot of Griffins in Marshville. I grew up on Olive Branch road not far from the park. My last name is Coppedge. It's an Anson County name. My mother's family is from Marshville. She was a Wright.

I dont know to much. My grandma was a child of eight. All i know is her mother and father owned the store that they used in the color purple. My great grandfather and grandma were killed in car wreck when she was very young and all the children were put in orphanages. My granny was actually in the home in Winston Salem. When we watched the movie she kept saying she felt as if she knew the place. We eventually read the ending credits where we found out that store used to film was actually the old general store that her parents actually owned.
