I wish they hadn't killed Pete Beale off, he could have made the programme so good, imagine him now with Kathy, and Pat when she was alive, plus his grandkids!!

Agreed. It's nice to see soaps they way they were back then, proper, well-written character-based storylines and how characters cope with their predicaments which IMO is far more enjoyable than endless explosions and murders!
Pete Beale was a proper blokes bloke. What makes the characters so good in the early Eastenders was that if you come from an inner city in the UK or Ireland you know people exactly like the characters portrayed in the show.
