    Ad Astra Plot Recap
Ad Astra follows Roy McBride, played by Brad Pitt, an astronaut that spends his life preoccupied with his work, valuing the mission above all else including his wife and life on Earth.
Roy is the son of Earth’s most decorated astronaut, a man named Clifford McBride, played by Tommy Lee Jones who was part of a mission known as Project Lima which was created in order to try and find intelligent life in the universe. Clifford and the rest of his team arrived at Neptune and began carrying out recon and then mysteriously disappeared without a trace for several years.
This has shaped Roy completely who has tried to live up to his father’s image and the movie is very much about him becoming his own man after going on a vast and distant journey throughout the far reaches of space.
    Ad Astra Explained
The meaning behind Ad Astra itself comes from the latin phrase “per aspera ad astra” which in itself means ‘Through Hardships To The Stars’ and throughout the film Roy runs into test after test, dealing with Pirates on the Moon who murder for resources and wild animals trapped on far distant stations.
It really is breathtaking and at the heart of the entire piece is the mystery of ‘are we alone in the Galaxy?’
After sending a message on Mars, Roy is seemingly ousted from the rest of the mission and we discover that his highly decorated father may not be the hero that he is on Earth. We learn that Clifford murdered the rest of his crew when they tried to return to Earth and this drives Roy to sneak aboard the craft that is being sent to terminate him and travel to Neptune himself.
    Ad Astra Ending Explained
His father admits that he killed the crew because they didn’t find anything in their expeditions and after giving up decided to go home. This angered Clifford who saw them as trying to escape from a task that requires deeper sacrifice, a selfless mindset that is more inclined for the good of mankind rather than one’s self. Clifford says he was never interested in life on Earth and left Roy and his ailing mother because he had a destiny and a purpose which was to answer the bigger questions. We learn that the surges were caused by complications that arose when his crew was trying to escape and that though he has been trying to stop them, he hasn’t had much luck.
Roy mines Cliffords data on planets and whilst he discovers that there are countless, beautiful planets out there that the was no life. Clifford sees this as a waste, it’s not the answer that he’s looking for and he refuses to give up whereas Roy states that this is an answer and it actually lets us know that we are all that we have and much cherish it.
    Ad Astra Review
It’s a strong message and the movie is constantly changing the dynamics of the piece to keep it engaging throughout in a way that is truly captivating. I’ve never seen a film before like Ad Astra that feels so close to our reality that you could almost touch it but so distant that it’s intergalactic.
Similar to Interstellar, though the location, setting and characters are all based in Science Fiction, the true heart of the piece is it’s study of humanity and Ad Astra beautifully lets us know what it means to be human and how we must place value in the things that matter in our lives.
I meant what I said at the start and I think that Ad Astra is one of the best films of the year. It’s outstanding from start to finish and that’s why it gets a…

I went to see the film last night. It's a visually stunning piece and Brad Pitt gives a well paced and measured performance, if I can put it that way! What I took from the ending is that one should appreciate what one already has. The importance of family sprang to mind and specifically in Brad Pitt's character's case to reconnect with his own wife and be a better husband.(which is ironic as in real life he and Angelina are no longer together!)

Physics Undergrad here. People saying that the ending is unrealistic because Clifford doesn’t find aliens are completely wrong. We have no idea how often life arises in the universe as we only know of one planet where it has. You cannot extrapolate any ideas from this single data point.
I think that the spin that there are no aliens was very refreshing in a film market saturated by movies where pretty much every single planet in the universe supports life and it provides a unique viewpoint regarding our place in the universe.
Loved this movie. 9.5/10 for me.

    • @matthewgaynor2660
      @matthewgaynor2660 5 лет назад +11

We have an entire scientific foundation which has only been discovered in the past 100 years and we barely understand a fraction of a percent of it. It's astonishing there are people who parade around saying one side is ignorant and vice versa. We don't know and in our life time we probably won't. But no matter what, in fiction, we have the chance to open arguments, thoughts, and debates that may only exist for the sake of thinking about it. To say its' unrealistic at the end is as ignorant to say that definitively, we are the only species. The point is that we're talking about it. Love your viewpoint and the film.

I think that he didn’t find life because of what Roy said: he missed what was right in front of him. Alien life didn’t matter because what mattered were the people around him, which is what his dad didn’t realize, but Roy did by the end. It wouldn’t fit with the themes of the movie.

@@draven_kx7 I couldn't understand the characters. Why was Roy so sad all the time? He missed his ex-wife, so what? Why couldn't he keep her in the first place? He's not the only guy working a lot and the wives are generally okay. If you're a successful intelligent, emotionally strong and handsome astronaut, you should be able to manage not being dumped by your wife. So that whole story felt like rubbish to me. Besides, he was supposed to be the kind of guy who is very dedicated to his job but it felt like he didn't give a shit about his job at all. There was no passion, no enjoyment, no curiosity, nothing. He was just sad and jaded all the time. Besides, he didn't seem to care about death at all. His plans were impossible but he had no hesitation or fear in executing them. WTF? It's not how normal humans operate. How can you be so emotional about your long gone dad but not even care about your own life? So no, I couldn't relate to the character. I couldn't understand the dad either. Why would he kill his crew? Why would he want to die like that? etc. I couldn't understand either why there would be pirates on the moon. If you have a whole city + military base on the moon, why can't you deal with a bunch of pirates who have basically nowhere to hide.

I believe people expect something a new "rocket's red glare" cgi effect every time a sci-fi comes out; I also people disparage movies with I didn't like it, boring...
    Films are about story telling.
    Like campfire stories.
    That's it.
The industry doesn't spend time, money, and or talent, to make a bomb or to bore you.
They are doing their utmost best to tell a good story with a certain point of view.
It's flippant to say this movie is boring, or I didn't like it,
Then films aren't for you. You want entertainment, not story telling.
Ad Astra is classic film story telling at it's best, it's like a grown up version of The Wizard of Oz.
Pitt being a Dorothy-type character on a quest "over the rainbow" = outter space...
And finds out at the journey's end , there's no place like home, everything was always there, and you can go home again.
Peculiarly Pitt's character Roy exploration into outter space mirrors his exploration in his inner space.
Roy will also resonate with alot of Americans bc of his pioneering attitude, move forward, don't let the past stop you...land of the brave persona.
A similar film, Romeo is bleeding, Gary Oldman comes to mind.
    Anyway, stellar crafts manship.

Kirstanuci Kirstanuci Funny, I also was watching the movie, thinking Ad Astra was akin to The Wizard of Oz. 👍 Also, well said about “story telling” vs “entertainment”. Ad Astra was an excellent story, and I think it was executed well. Almost no plot holes, it was seen through til the end, and didn’t leave you guessing, and I also liked that they added in the atypical “we ARE alone” theory.

@devynchapman Anyone who starts a comment with Jesus Christ on a film review says everything.
Do you have any film history, did you go to any University? have you written any scripts, music scores, Broadway shows or plays, screenplays, designed any costumes, worked on any film or theatrical productions or acted in your whole life.
By what you wrote it appears you haven't or have little experience.
Which doesn't say your viewing isn't wrong. It's as informed as it can be.
And if you say my review is written for filmanistic intellengesia then you're right, it wasn't written for you...
So forget about it bc it wasn't written for your type of film theatrical experience.
You can check out my other intelligentsia reviews, and you'll probably Jesus Christ them too.
(Https://kirstanuci-kirstanuci.blogspot.com/2020/03/the-hunt.html?m=1) and check out The Hunt, Maleficent, Frozen 2, Birds of Prey, Dr Sleep, The Joker, Gemini Man, Rambo Last Blood, Ford vs Ferrari, etc .
But at least you'll see the consistency in film critique construction.
It's a compliment that you said it appears that I was paid by the industry bc that's says it appears to be a professional job.
Next time you visit a film, tell me about camera angles, shots, direction, director's intent, narrative, cinematography, score, setting...if you can't, there's no point of interacting. We have nothing in common.
      Thanks.

This movies was good in certain respects and terrible in others
    Pros:
    Casting and acting
    Cinematography
    Originality
    Cons:
    Plot .
The backdrop of space travel served no purpose to the plot. He could have easily been stranded on an island or at the bottom of the sea. To show loneliness, human connection and repeating acts between father and son. The foreshadowing of potential alien life not panning out is a twist but an underwhelming one.
The film setting was a distraction with no added value at all. It presented interesting idea like space mining and space pirates but that also panned out to serve no purpose either.
Im glad o never paid to watch it in the cinema.
    This is a 6/10.

There is an undeniable potency added to the journey by the fact that they went to the edge of human exploration in order to appreciate what was there the whole time. Sure, an island would work, but it wouldn't have carried the exact same weight. Besides, it being a space movie allowed for the beautiful cinematography that you enjoyed.

I love philosophical movies, but this one didn't trigger anything. It was so uninvolving. I could not feel Brad Pitt's emotions. I thought this wasn't the right casting. Ryan Gosling was far better in 'First Man'. I thought the movie was weird to, it left me unsatisfied completely. Except ofcourse the world building. Moon and its grey colours. Mars and its redness. Wow Mars was so intriguing. Those underground bunkers type of things.

theYogicMutant yeah I agree with you on the emotion aspect & it was a bit of a let down that I didn’t feel any attachments to Brads character but the acting and the close up shots and little eye & facial movement was great. Everything was great too as u said the Moon & Mars & even Neptune

    • @encchick2
      @encchick2 5 лет назад +6

That lack of emotion throughout the film is the point. Roy was angry, filled with rage, and rather that let that burn hot and eventually go away, he became cold, unfeeling, mission focused, and we, as spectators of his 'mission,' were kept on the outside just like every other person in his life. It's not until he makes the conscious decision to NOT be like his father that we can finally feel what he's feeling. That tear as his father's words hit home...ugh. I cried.
I sat in the theater comparing this movie to Contact, but the takeaway is totally different, even opposite to that one. In that movie, Arroway brings a message - an understanding of humanity - back to the world (that we are tiny and insignificant, but rare and precious and that we are absolutely NOT alone) that fundamentally changes the way she views human spirituality and existence. McBride's takeaway is much more personal, that we are totally alone in the universe, and as such, the only things that should matter in our lives are the connections that we are privileged to make with another human being. And this epiphany is what finally allows him to let go of his own anger and apathy in order to partake of those connections. The more I think about it, the more I love it. It's the kind of personal journal that makes me a happy, thinking movie goer. (also, being a total nerd, the thinness of a plot is inconsequential to me, so long as there is moving character development.)

Your review and analysis of this movie is spot on. I saw the movie today , first day, first show and had the same feeling. This is a brilliant movie. Even though most of the visuals in this movie appear in outer space or distant planets the human connection in the movie is so strong that it forces the movie watcher to introspect a little bit into their own life purpose and journey. Why did it take like 15 years to manifest itself? Never explained. Yet one magic nuke is going to fix the problem. They are getting super pulses from the ships antimatter power supply that are wiping electronics all over the solar system, so one nuke which will destroy whatever system this antimater is contained in won't make it worse?

I definition, i disagree when you rate this movie as an 8.5. It's more a 6 at best. So here's why while it has good graphics and pacing is good, you don't get to much information or less, the core message of the movie is flawed in my view.
The idea that we should look for those we have in our life and really apreciated them is true no doubt, but to say because we dream of reaching new worlds and look to another intellegent life forms will not allows to enjoy life as we know it, it is sad and bleak way of seeing things.

André Martins id argue the movie wasn’t trying to send the message of “dreaming of new worlds wont allow you to enjoy life” but more so that even in trying to achieve our most ambitious and wide reaching goals we shouldn’t forget about what is in front of us either. It’s more about appreciating what you have while also shooting for the stars versus don’t shoot for the stars or else you’ll be unhappy.

That was necessary i think you need to explain how a relativity theory works (general terms) because the guy in the movie gets old in 10min it would be to much to process if you don't explain and other moments like that also eligle. While bradd pitt moment's are of grown man with severe daddy issues that looks and acta kind funny
Like he is trying to hold some poop really hard inside.

Stunning movie. A film of few words. But those that were actually in there were chosen wisely. For me this film represents a red-carpet-moment for humanism. It is as if we were in the shoes of this Astronaut and his feelings. We even hear his inner voice talking and reasoning with himself. This gives the character a whole new dimension.
As for a lot of other commentators on here who also recognized the seemingly normal religious bits... it just dawned on me what the meaning of this movie is all about untill I saw the very end of the film:
As I said, this Film is about humanism and giving it the red carpet moment that it deserves. In the ending, it seems as if Brad Pitt is creating a new kind of prayer for those of us not believing in any God. I would rather say it is prayer-like or even a vow to humanity and kindness. A recipe for living a good life with a healthy mind.
After realizing this I watched the movie again and found it beautifully worked out... matters of morality, and the human condition in a complicated world. And then this final moment culminating in a vow which doesn’t need a god to be prayed to for having a fulfilled and happy life. What it needs is us and our relationship with our companions/family and those we love.
A must-watch for anyone who needs hope in believing in humanity.

Just re-watched it, trust me with all this Quarantine going on, the movie makes much more sense.
In the movie go "To The Stars" in search of something, something greater than what they perceive or value down here on Earth. Brad Pitt's Character, along with his father, only speak about the mission, past accomplishments, the things they want to find, and how disconnected they feel from people. But once out there in the void of space alone, Roy understands that what they've been searching for all along has always been here in front of them.
The movie is not about whether or not there's actually life out there, but where can true value be found. And while all those astronauts desperately search amongst the stars, they forget the importance of human connections.
Same way us, normal people, go around life searching and working towards something greater and fail to see what we already have. Only when we are deprived from it can we truly realize it; like now with this virus where the mere act of handshakes has been taken from us. Many of us before this outbreak just went about complaining about life, feeling lonely, or wasting ourselves in meaningless en devours; and now that everyone's stuck at home, perhaps worried about how to survive without a salary, we yearn for normal life.
Maybe I'm putting too many of my own feelings into the film, but from this second viewing that's what I understood. Before this outbreak began I was genuinely tired of going to work, seeing the same people I knew spoke behind my back, dealing with something I was never good at, socializing. Most of the time I'd distance myself from people because I found nothing of value in them, interacting with them only tired me. Now it's been months since I first shut myself in, unemployed, living off savings, unsure of how I'll pay the rent in the coming months, stuck in a miniature apartment alone with no relatives or close friends in town, knowing very well that even once quarantine is lifted tourism will take a long while before it returns to the city meaning no jobs.
I want things to go back to normal. I miss going to work, having good times with people, enjoying the things I took for granted. If anything, all I want is what Roy says in his final monologue back on Earth: "I am active and engaged... I am focused on the essential, to the exclusion of all else. I am unsure of the future, but I am not concerned. I will rely on those closest to me, and I will share their burdens as they share mine. I will live and love."

My delima is why did they send Roy out to find out about his father when Roy is this great astronaut they could've utilized towards saving the world, a decendent from his father being the best, even if his father mysterious went "missing". What does his father have to do with the end of the Earth and keepibg this a top secret mission? They kept talking about how Earth may not be existent... can anyone explain?

Great movie! I got to the theater 20 minutes into the movie, but still understood it. Not sure why there’s so many RUclips videos about Ad Astra’s “ending explained” because the movie itself explained it for you... The whole movie was easy to understand, while maintaining an “out of this world”/alternate life storyline. The film kept you believing that all of the film *could* be possible. Like I could leave the theater then and there, and board a spaceship back to earth. Best movie I’ve seen in a while! 👍👍

Idk. Something about the way it ended that instantly made the rest of the film suddenly unenjoyable. Like I was putting up with the whole story & unrealism for a big payoff but there was no payoff, just more unrealistic disappointment. I didn’t find Brad Pitts reaction to finding out the truth to fit his character at all. Almost as if he was forced to respond the way he did by a script writer.

  • @xsvin3749

I watched with a friend and we both came out whelmed. We felt like there was a lack of payoff for things they were setting up. We both thought they were going to go for a mind bending ending with aliens, but it ended up being more straightforward. There were a lot of religious parts that never felt relevant in the end - various prayers throughout. A lot of sudden deaths without real purpose except to make sure our protagonist was alone. Why have the mayday with the baboon? The buildup was mostly to nothing. I understand it was to show to cherish what we have, but I feel like it may have eventually been going for more initially? I even thought it could have been metaphorical because of the lack of payoff. Not a bad movie, but I can't say it was exceptional. For those who are fans of Pitt would probably get more enjoyment from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

But that's kind of the point. The father spent his life lookign for that big payoff and there is none. The real prize is in enjoying what you've got instead. And you got a pretty darn good film that didn't go the way you expected it to. It's pretty much a self fulfilling masterpiece in the way it ends.

  • @abeautifulmindispoetrydefi5323

I don't think that it will as a surprise, to say that I found the film actually quite disturbing on levels that most of us wouldn't normally engage on...
Whilst you have to give credit to the "Film Producer" and respect their decision for portraying their story, it remains to be questioned whether it does truly or not answer the one big question. Sadly for me, the movie is a downer and removes all hope by the time the final curtain goes down.
So it did nothing for me, it was as satisfying as a Chinese Takeaway which always leaves me feeling hungry again in a few hours. Perhaps I am one of a few that has a deep sense of connection whether a "Divine Being" or just simply the Cosmos, I for one moment would not believe or assume that we were ever alone.
One of the things that is covertly covered up by advanced civilizations is the ability to be hidden in plain sight, and its worth noting that is a skill that did master really well. The other is as above so below. The great pyramids of Giza remains a testament to that truth. Whilst the Egyptian Government has discovered as far back as the last century, all is not at it seems with the whole site.
It's not an accident that the location happens to be at the center of our planet, but the truth lies beneath the ground and not above. I would refer this site to being the equivalent to "Grand Central Station" on a galactic scale.
Getting back to Ad Astra, the film it's noire in places, and gives that feel of tragic reality to the point of paranoia that one would jump through hoops in order to satisfy the establishment. Which does end up going out of its way to question you to the point that you are no longer sure of yourself. Which Brad Pitt delivers brilliantly throughout the movie.
Saying that Tommy Lee Jones, epitomizes and mirrors Brads performance right up to the very ending. The relief is that somewhere along the journey Brad reconnects with humanity, and that is it's one saving grace.
The rest is, not really my bag, so to speak.
Perhaps I'm not dumb enough to think that we're the only intelligent life form here in the cosmos, and I thank God!

Hmm, waiting for the movie to be released in India and now I am reading the 2nd spoiler, :) Till I watch the movie with my own eyes, I still won't be able to form an opinion. Yet whatever snippets I have seen, it is totally mind blowing. Looks like 2020 is going to be Brad's year with that Oscar trophy in hand. Not bad Brad Pitt, you are almost there, :)

Moon buggy chase shootout???? Come on. Killer Space baboons???? Who knew it was so easy to break into a launching rocket!!!! And the final insult???? Brad Pitt easily tears loose a metal door and uses it to fly through space back to his spaceship....like two miles away. All the while being pummeled by space rocks...which never knock him him of course. Scientifically, this movie was an insulting joke.

One thing I don’t get is how one little station could be causing such surges for the entire planet. Why tf did they allow such a seemingly weapon aboard the ship. Why not just turn the ship a little so the surge waves aren’t pointed towards earth’s general direction? What were the surges caused by anyway, what was the catalyst exactly?

Agreed with the breakdown. What really hooked me was the attention to metaphors and hidden meanings in the film. For example, I likened how the boosters detach and drift off after the rocket launches to how many of the supporting characters (Col. Pruitt, the lieutenant etc.) were never really there for Roy throughout his journey. They were only meant to lift him off and push him into the next step of his voyage.
I absolutely love how this movie kept me thinking for hidden meanings long after the credits rolled. Or maybe I'm just over analysing who knows.

Good movie, very very captivating but the "presentation" could have been better. At some points, it's not very clear why some characters behave the way they do or what they hope to achieve. It's not always very logical.
    1. I don't get why they had to sent his son to space to contact TLJ's character. They could have any random guy pretend to be Roy. It's not like TLJ would recognise the voice of his son. His son was 16 when he left.
    2. I didn't understand why the black women from Mars helped Brad Pitt. What did she hope to achieve by helping him?
    3. The ending was kind of confusing. At one point he wanted to nuke his father? Then, after seeing him, did he change his mind?

I dont understand in the movie why they expected the main character to be this robot with no emotions. Like is that what they expect form astronauts? I highly doubt that. Those psychological evaluation reminds me of the baseline test from bladerunner but those baseline test were for the replicants to ensure they don't turn on there masters. Expecting astronauts to behave like robots makes no sense. They are astronauts not robots.

    Oh. My. Jesus.
    This. Film. is. Just.
    WOW.
Visually beautiful, but don't get me wrong, it is far beyond a typical sci-fi flick. It's more psychological than big explosions and action sequences
    It's a very "quiet" film.
It is meditative, contemplative and leaves you in a state of self-reflection.
I found myself just sitting in the cinema with (literally) my jaw dropped when it ended. I realized my jaw dropped probably midway into the film as I stopped eating my popcorn.
But it is not for the typical thrill seeking sci-fi peeps, as I've noticed some people leave during the film.
As Pitt himself mentioned in an interview: "If you are a fan of superhero action movies where the hero saves the universe in the end... This is NOT that film." so others have found it to be boring.
It had a slow pace that sits well with the theme and the thoughts it provokes. It has a very singular POV that helps let you experience the film internally. As it progresses, every stage and character of the film helps with that too.
Now, Mr. William Bradley Pitt. Hot damn. This beauty of a man. Had SO MUCH CONTROL. He displays his acting excellence in a genre where someone else could have been over-the-top. And he controls each scene. He is like the voice that we hear in our heads. Regardless of quiet, solemn moments or chaos. He is like the shrink that guides us as we unknowingly reflect.
One of Pitt's lines in the film was "We're all we've got. We are all we've got."
    And that just hits...HARD.
    Brilliant brilliant brilliant film.
And dare I say, the best film of 2019!
