I think OSK did a great job demonstrating what happens with a sea kayak in the surf. Being knocked over by a breaking wave is a foregone conclusion if you sit parallel and do NOTHING but it is a good demonstration of how the water pushes the hull out from under you so your CG capsizes you. Before long it is possible to compensate for this with boat edge and body position without bracing at all. Having a reliable roll on both sides makes learning all of this basic surf stuff soooooo much easier. Good job OSK.
Well done! I never thought about the two different ways that you get knocked over by big waves vs little waves. In either case I just brace offshore like crazy. I'm not sure lining the boat works out every time, when the waves are even medium sized I get surfed backwards many times trying to break out of the surf zone. It's very tiring, but I am learning to surf backwards.
around 30 years ago I Was surfing in on a wave, playing around in a whitewater boat... the surf was getting bigger as the time went along... managed to pull of the perfect 'cruciform' ie bow of the boat pointing straight down stern upon in the air paddle held to form a cross, you get the idea. Next thing I know im doing a front flip and smack face first down onto the beach, with full force of the wave pushing me into the sand, broke my arm in three places had concussion and lost a tooth..... moral of the story.... meh... forget about that go have fun sometimes sh*t happens
"Sea kayaks capsize really easily in the surf." Yeah, I experienced that rather viscerally in the first hour of paddling at Tybee Island this past summer...
Slap support is the easiest and best for novices to learn, you don’t try slap support on the waves downside. I remember an old book by Derek Hutchinson called sea canoeing it had the best illustrations ( he drew them) I’ve ever seen on techniques, rolling, support etc.
Ah, those sea kayaks all have different hull designs. Some are famous for easy handling. And some need you to do a lot of steering. Some surf like a surf board, and some need steeper waves. Your weight has an impact. Each boat has pro's and con's. Variety indeed.
Better to brace and stay upright if you can. Notice how often the paddle is on the beach side of the kayak. The kayakers in this video are purposefully NOT bracing on the wave side so that they can illustrate the flipping.

That black and orange kayak is gorgeous.
He did well filming that. Know i wouldn't fancy sitting completely still completely broadside to breaking wave
really clear explanation of the flip -thanks
You're welcome!
Very nicely framed images, love the video. Will look out for the next one. Cheers!

some kayaks do like to surf backwards. these kayaks also weathercock more in wind.
Great footage and narration!
Thanks glad you liked it
Thank you! Good explanations, and we see exactly what happens. This is inspiration to learn sea kayaking.
Thank you. good to hear you like the video
If you brace towards the shore you will flip. If you brace into the wave you will survive the wave. This is a good beginners course.
Learn in the small stuff first.
Great demonstration dude! that was great. Cheers and thumbs up from me.
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent, excellent video!
Many thanks!
Awesome video man!
Glad you enjoyed it
That looks like a great sea kayak, what is it?
This is an NDK explorer
I hope you'll always be happy with kayaking.
Thx for the info!
No problem!
Is a longer Kayak better for handling the weaves or a shorter Kayak?
What kind of kayak is that in the video and how long it is?
this is a 16 ft kayak. Sorter kayaks are generally easier to handle in the waves

Music by Lewys???
After recovering, do you stay wet for the entire duration of your paddling session?
@Dan-Rather, huh! A funny fucker!

Shark to the left of the kayak at 1:03??
Shark!
Get a wave ski it has fins underneath making it much more controllable.
I also use surf kayaks but there is something quite rewarding about surfing a big sea kayak as well. Variety is the key.

great tutorial, thank you - where is that wonderful beach?
It is In Cornwall UK
I always say, don’t fight the wave. Tuck in, and roll with it.
