Diddy Pole Cats In The Heat!

  • As is Memorial Day weekend tradition, we hit our favorite stretch of river again to run diddy poles and pulled in 20 catfish! I had a host of friends in my boat over the weekend, including Andy, Curtis and my girlfriend, Nicole.
    We chased big Iowa flathead catfish and channel catfish. We boated 20 cats in the scorching heat of the weekend and we also rescued a baby deer. This was our first diddy pole run of 2018. We did boat a nice flatty, caught lots of cats and had a great time on the river.

    Ignore the whiners regarding the music! You did just fine with the music selection, the timing and the volume overlay was perfect in my headphones. I've heard plenty of crappy music played too loud in RUclips videos and this one is not one of them. I really enjoyed this compilation of line checks and wish we had similar weather and fish here in south central Oregon. We have pretty awesome offshore fishing but it's a big deal to hook up the boat and run down to the coast for the six fish limit. These days it's a much better deal to spend two hundred bucks on fish at Costco rather than on gas.

    Use steel leaders and a smaller heavy duty steel circle hook on the lines where hooks are missing for alligator snapping turtles. And for gar use nylon rope flayed out with a steel leader and hook and bait in the middle of the flayed out strands of nylon.

    • @DeeplyDrivenOutdoors
      @DeeplyDrivenOutdoors  6 лет назад +1

      Wayne Carpenter The steel leader is a good idea for use on lines in that river. The hooks were all missing from generally the same area of the same river.

      Which might suggest a resident Alligator Snapping Turtle. Probably the diameter of a wash tub. Just watch out for their aggressive NASTY temper! Ive caught them in the small lake behind my house, while jug lining. I had a live hand size bluegill on for bait.

      Wayne Carpenter Oh no doubt. We've actually caught one or two while running lines. I'm serious about eating it if I catch one. Snapper is on my bucket list. That's not a bad idea about steel leaders. Then I can find out who the culprit is for sure. If it's gar, I'm taking my bow up in there to shoot a bunch.

I once caught 40 snapping turtles on one of rhose pre-made Wal-Mart trotlines over the course of maybe a week, a couple weighed >40lbs, none of them broke hooks or or cut them off. The drops were standard #18 white twisted nylon, doubled. Maybe your knots are pulling out? What knot are you thing your hooks on with? Maybe try snelling them, or a uni-knot or a Palomar knot? Maybe Alligator Gar are,making a comeback or >100lb Alligator Snapping Turtles are taking them? I'm curious because I don't want it happening to me.

      @@dallasmore6703 We use the uni knot. Those Wal-Mart trots will give a guy fits. I have one and have been switching to making all my own drops for it. The line frays pretty bad on em. We actually only ever got bit off on this one trip. It wasn't a recurring issue. My guess is that gar teeth got snarled up in the and it eventually cut loose from it. We have also had a turtle or 2 on our diddies that didn't break off but we don't see turtles wind up on our line much

    • @dallasmore6703
      @dallasmore6703 3 года назад

      @@DeeplyDrivenOutdoors Yeah they will! Lol! Those pre-made trotlines are junk. I used them when I was a kid a couple times. I'm planning to go trotlining and jug fishing soon so I built some lines. First time since about 1979! My stepdad used to trotline fish as did my Grandfather on the Ohio River between Cave-In-Rock IL and the old lock & dam 52 at Golconda IL. Both of them used old wooden coke-a-cola boxes to hold their lines. They'd cut notches in the top edge of the boxes about 3/4" - 1" apart. They'd load in a weight, usually an old curtain weight or a piece of steel 3-8 lbs or so, the lay the line in, as they came to a hook they'd bait it and hang it in the notches they'd cut in the box, and repeat. A single coke box would hold about 50 hooks. After the last hook they'd load in another weight at the end. To set it they'd place the baited line box on the back of the boat, then tie off 30' or so of line to a tree or a snag, start the boat and take off slow, the baited line would pay out of the box, as you can to a corner you'd turn the box, when you came to the end you'd hold the weight, attach a jug as a marker, stretch the line tight and drop it. I remember setting up to 12 boxes with 50 hooks each and catching several hundred lbs of catfish in a weekend. They didn't really target flatheads, didn't use live bait, they used pretty much anything they could get their hands on, cut shad, skipjacks, dough balls, cheese, crawdads, grasshoppers, even chunks of ivory soap. My grandfather made a homemade doughball bait out of cotton balls, white bread, cheese scraps, canned sardines, vanilla extract, garlic, asefedida, fennel, etc... I never could get the exact recipe out of him. Anyhow, good luck with your fishing.

      @@dallasmore6703 I'm pretty new to trots, relatively speaking but I can see how a person could pile up the cats in the right spot. In Iowa, we have pretty restrictive regulations on diddy poles and trots - only 5 sets with a TOTAL of 15 hooks (for interior rivers, at least.) I love big flathead as much as the next guy but I'll also never knock a good mess of 2-4 lb eater channels.

      Freelance Duck Hunting Thanks. I think we kept 10 total through the weekend, so about half which is a little more than usual.

    I moved up to that area back in 93 from Louisiana and all I can say is that you do not have the big fish and your laws SUCK! Besides that most of you do not know much about catching fish... Sorry. You do have the Deer tho. Fantastic...

      I'll give you that our laws suck. No jug fishing, no noodling, only 5 diddies per person, no limb lines. This video was a light weekend fish-wise. Check out a few of my other vids. We boat some that are a lot bigger.

    As a "hunter" you should know that you didn't save the fawn....it was not in danger, the only thing you did was "stress" the fawn, reducing it's chance of survival.
    I have bow-hunted for 40 years....in learning to "respect" the game you hunt/fish you learn that all wildlife do better without our intervention.

      So, the fawn had just been hanging out on the steep riverbank for 18 hours (we had heard it the night before) because it wanted to and it could have gotten back up the bank just fine on its own?
      I am sure the rescue stressed the fawn out but we figured it was better than leaving it to certain death from thirst or starvation.

      This situation shouldn't be confused with stumbling across a fawn on a nature hike, believing it to be in distress and trying to "rescue" it. The fawn was genuinely trapped
