- I had a oil pressure light on my 2009 GMC Canyon. Replacing the oil pressure switch resolved the issue.
Here's a link to the switch: amzn.to/3qI8lIV
Here's the socket I used to get it off: amzn.to/3rZEeOw
Here's an oil pressure gauge if you want to make sure it's good while you've got the sensor out: amzn.to/3weYApV
Here's the electrical contact cleaner: amzn.to/3m3TrfD
I get a small cut if you use my links above and it's free for you, hope they help!
Thanks for the video. Was able to locate it and change it on my 04 Colorado after watching this video. But luckily I had the clearance with the tire all the way turned to not have to remove it.
Apparently you don’t do this every day a 27 mm deep well socket offset half inch drive ratchet handle wises. And about 4 to 5 minutes Reaching down from the top you can replace it without taking the wheel off without taking the inner fender out and like I said 4 to 5 minutes it is replaced
Wish I'd seen your video!
@@adamdport I don’t have one but like I said open your hood look down by the breather box you can see the old filter and the oil pressure switch . with your hand pull up on the two tabs slide the wire off. Take a 27 mm deep wall socket and half-inch drive ratchet With a raised handle break it loose screw it out and screw in the new one it’s a simple as that
@@roberthartley6273 thanks for the comment. It would have been difficult to film that. removing the wheel and fender liner only adds maybe 20 minutes to the job, but hopefully your comment and my video can help someone save a few minutes. If this is a daily thing for you and you have more tricks to share, I'd encourage you to start filming your work and throwing on here to help others, it sure would have helped me! Thanks again.

Man, it looks cold where you are! God bless all of the struggling shade-tree mechanics, outside working to keep their trucks running longer. Been there, done that! 🤣
I have the GMC canyon 2.8 l 4 cylinder and the location for that sensor faces the front of the truck right underneath the oil filter. Recently had the truck shut down on me while on the highway never let me know low oil pressure at all. Truck had lost all oil 5 quarts of it and I thought it was engine was locked up. After putting 5 quarts of oil in got it to crank hopefully no damage to the cylinders seems to run fine. One thing I noticed is the oil pressure sensor is pouring about a tablespoon of oil out every 5 minutes from the oil pressure sensor. Obviously the sensor failed cuz no warning lights came on the dash for low oil or oil pressure so hopefully getting a new one along with a crap ton of RTV sealant / silicone on the sensor threads cross my fingers hopefully no more leaks and the dash will actually read the low oil sensor / pressure sensor.
I'm glad it didn't seize up! I doubt it's leaking around the threads and silicone/rtv can cause issues if it ends up in the wrong spot. The sensor comes with thread sealant on it already and it's worked fine for me so far. Good luck!
@@adamdport yeah I was lucky that it didn't. On my way to get the new sensor from advance Auto. From reading on the internet apparently this is a common problem for those oil sensors to fail and leak through them.
How big was the socket? I'll just take the sensor with me to pick up a socket.
I used this $7 socket on amazon amzn.to/3rZEeOw. I read that a regular 1-1/16" deep socket might not be deep enough for your switch. But if it ends up working for you, could you let me know?
Was this a long term fix? My light just came on, but I know the oil is good since I just changed it 3 weeks ago and is "normal" on the dipstick. I hope it's just this pressure switch...light only comes on at low RPMs
Been just under 4 years and the light hasn't come back since. Good luck!
Easier to put on the lift and just change it that way. No tire and fender liner removal needed.
I accept donations, thanks in advance!!
I need help some help, my 2008 GMC Canyon has had a lot of issues. The main at the moment being this terrible sounding rough start where is sort of rumbles and sounds like its about to die and then revs up. It does this a few times and then mellows out. Also anytime I go from park to drive or reverse, as soon as I take my foot off the break the truck accelerates without puttting my foot on the pedal. Any info helps if you get a chance. Thanks!!
Is your check engine light on? Have you scanned it for any codes (free at some auto parts places)? Does it drive ok once you're moving?
Thanks, informative and quick. Now I need to do mine
What size is the socket
I used this $12 socket on amazon amzn.to/3rZEeOw
Would this switch be in the same location on a 2005 GMC Canyon 5 cylinder Please? and thank you
I would assume it's right above the oil filter just the same. Please leave another comment once you find out to help the next guy! Thanks
@@adamdport same right above the filter
Did your oil light keep coming on and engine and truck seem running fine? Mines running great and full of oil checked it twice
Yep exactly, light would come on 20 seconds after driving but ran great. Hope it helps!
Would this be the same for a 2015 Colorado?
I'm not sure. If you find out, feel free to reply here to help out the next guy. Thanks.
My brother has the same truck except a 2007 5cyk Colorado been working on cars for over 20years and everyday these cars are getting harder in harder and some of the dumbest stuff iv seen them design it's not even funny how bad it is.. I'm hoping the switch fixes his problem he's had the oil light on for awhile now he said someone told him it was the pump and there a bi$h to change Iv been trying to see if anyone has had the same problem with there's
I was wondering if this fixed your problem. And what was your truck doing before? low oil light coming on at stop lights and idleing?
1971ufcfan it would start and idle fine but 20 seconds into driving the light would come on. Replaced the sensor and haven't seen the light since. I've heard that it's a common issue with these trucks. Hope that helps, good luck!
@@adamdport thank you that kind of answered my question it has me kind of scared to death that my old pumps going out. It did it to me today just sitting while idling . As soon as I put it in gear it went out.
1971ufcfan if you want peace of mind, you can measure the oil pressure with a gauge while you have the oil pressure switch out (gauge screws in in place of the switch). Have a friend hold it at different rpms while you watch the gauge. If the oil pressure looks good you'll know it was the switch. Here's one you could use: amzn.to/3weYApV Looking forward to hearing what you find!
I have a hummer H3 in-line 5 my oil indicator light comes on and dings at stop sometimes then goes off when I hit the gas , sound like the same thing?
@@erikmotsinger4388sounds exactly like what what fix yours
What engine do you have?
Firfyter 3.7L
@@adamdport thanks. We have a 3.5 but it is the same location. We were able to get it from the top side pretty easily.
can't you just reach up from underneath and do this job?
I think from above or below will work, just a lot harder to show on camera in the winter. Good luck!
Oh, ok. Thanks for doing it the hard way so we can see! I enjoy your channel!
Hi , i have a colorado 2007 3.7 and oil pressure light comes on at idle after driving for awhile and disapear when accelerating i've bought the truck from my friend he told me the truck started doing this after an oil change so i've start changing oil first, i've put some synthetic 10w30 but the problem still there oil level seems to be good i hope it's not the oil pump... or the engine himself well the engine runs smoothly ... i know silverado have that valve lifter oil filter problem does it have that filter on my colorado 2007?
I'm not sure, but I do know that these oil pressure switches are common failure points on these trucks. If you want some peace of mind you can check the oil pressure with a gauge while you're changing the switch from the video, the gauge screws in in place of the switch. Let me know if it helps!
@@adamdport ill try that thank you buddie ;)
@@adamdport what was the symptoms for you when that happen? The oil pressure light comes on at idle or stay on all the time?
@@xghost3174 in my case it was fine when it idled but the light would come on after 20 seconds of driving. But some of the other commenters had the opposite (light when idling but off once driving)
@@adamdport i've changed it yesterday pretty easy to do... tanks for the tips for now it seems ok i drove and ive let my engine run about an hour the light never come back so i hope its ok now ... thanks again ;)
What size socket does it take?
Copied from the reply I gave to the comment above you: "I used this $7 socket on amazon amzn.to/3rZEeOw. I read that a regular 1-1/16" deep socket might not be deep enough for your switch. But if it ends up working for you, could you let me know?"
Did changing this out work for you?
Yes, here we are 7 months later and I haven't seen the light since.
@@adamdport thank you for that. I have something similar going on where the oil light comes on while sitting at stops or red lights. I also experience overheating as well but it goes away as I take off.
@@andrewm5190 Did the overheating stop with the change of your pressure switch? Curious as I’m having the same issue in my 06 Colorado. Thanks
@@eliotrobb1706 sorry I didn't get a notification for your comment. I wouldn't expect overheating to be related. I'd imagine you need to replace the thermostat. Front left wheel and trim comes off and it's right there, here's the one I used: amzn.to/3kjbkIm
