Miles Davis Kind of Blue meets Analogue Productions' UHQR, the pinnacle of high-quality vinyl!
Definitive limited run reissue Ultra High Quality Record!
45 RPM double LP release limited to 25,000 copies
Best-selling album in jazz history; mastered by Bernie Grundman from the original 3-track master tapes
Pressed at Quality Record Pressings using Clarity Vinyl®
Purest possible pressing and most visually stunning presentation and packaging!
Dream team of Davis, Adderley, Coltrane, Evans, Kelly, Chambers, Cobb make history
Legends have a way of sticking around. If there was ever an album awaiting a high-fidelity, custom-pressed vinyl treatment of the level you now hold in your hands, it is Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. The top-selling jazz album of all time, it has been lauded, entered into "Best Of" lists and Halls of Fame, and universally acknowledged as a landmark recording - a five-track masterpiece of melancholy mood and melody.
It continues to be one of the most listened-to and studied recordings of all time, a required primer for many young musicians, and one of the most transcendent pieces of music ever recorded. Davis played trumpet sublime with his ensemble sextet featuring pianist Bill Evans, drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley with Wynton Kelly playing piano on "Freddy the Freeloader."
Now Analogue Productions, the audiophile in-house reissue label of Acoustic Sounds, Inc., together with Quality Record Pressings, is putting Kind of Blue where it belongs: the Ultra High Quality Record (UHQR) pressed on Clarity Vinyl with attention paid to every single detail of every single record.
The 200-gram records will feature the same flat profile that helped to make the original UHQR so desirable. From the lead-in groove to the run-out groove, there is no pitch to the profile, allowing the customer's stylus to play truly perpendicular to the grooves from edge to center. Clarity Vinyl allows for the purest possible pressing and the most visually stunning presentation. Every UHQR will be hand inspected upon pressing completion, and only the truly flawless will be allowed to go to market. Each UHQR will be packaged in a deluxe box and will include a booklet detailing the entire process of making a UHQR along with a hand-signed certificate of inspection. This will be a truly deluxe, collectible product.
For this 45 RPM 2LP edition we've set the bar for excellence higher. Lifelike distinct detail that was palpable enough in 33 1/3 RPM is holographic at 45. Four glorious sides of 200-gram vinyl from QRP, the best presser in the business, reduces distortion and high frequency loss as the wider-spaced grooves let your stereo cartridge track more accurately. There's also a 20-page booklet with updated session photos and liner notes by Robert Palmer and Ashley Kahn. Plus, we've included photos of legendary mastering engineer Bernie Grundman's mastering notes from this release.
Kind of Blue is more than Miles Davis's most enduring recording, it's a testament to Miles' experimental approach, drastically simplifying modern jazz by returning to melody unlike the chord complexity more often heard at the time. "The music has gotten thick," Davis complained in a 1958 interview for The Jazz Review. "... There will be fewer chords but infinite possibilities as to what to do with them." Kind of Blue is, in a sense, all melody - and atmosphere.
None of the musicians had played any of the tunes before heading into the first of two recording sessions in early spring of 1959. In fact Miles had written out the settings for most of them only a few hours before the session. Miles also stuck to his old recording procedure of having virtually no rehearsal and only one take for each tune.
Miles remained proud of the album, performing at least two of its tracks - "So What" and "All Blues" - for years after, until his musical path took him in a different direction.
History was on the side of Kind of Blue; it was born in 1959, at the peak of the golden age of high-fidelity, featuring innovations in studio equipment (magnetic tape, high-quality condenser microphones), matched by advancements in home audio reproduction (long-player records - LPs; high-end turntables, and other stereo components). Kind of Blue also benefited from Miles' being signed to the leading major record company of the day - Columbia Records, a part of the CBS media conglomerate. Columbia had the means and wisdom to invest in cutting edge recording technology, and their own professional recording studio.

I don't really understand these complaints about changing sides more often! To me it's a testament to how lazy our society has gotten because of technology ( not that I'm dissing tech)! Like I've explained to someone, I play side one of a record, make a beverage, then play the other side! And I'm even more excited about hearing the rest of it! I think in my opinion that's the perfect way to listen to music! Listen 15-20 minutes, then take a breath , and go the rest! To me that little break between sides is invaluable!

I have both the 33 and the 45 UHQRs from Acoustic sounds. The 45 sounds a tiny bit better, but the 33 is still excellent. I'm happy that I live only two hours away from Salina, which is home to Acoustic Sounds, Analog Productions and Quality Record Pressings. I can literally place the order, make the trip, and come home to listen to my LPs. It's a long round-way trip, but it's possible.

I have: the original Classic LP, MoFi, 6-Eye; Mosaic LP; RSD RTI mono; and a UK pressing. A few months ago my group did our own blind listening session. We all agreed, in this order: 1) First Classic LP; 2) second Classic LP; 3) 33 1/3 UHQR; 4) MoFi. While our assessments of the first three were close, the MoFi was a distant fourth. BTW, one member of our group is a jazz bassist. Got the 45 UHQR yesterday, looking forward to it.

It's funny Michael, how i come across so many albums (not Audiophile), where this kind of thoughtfulness is in place, when it comes to the "package". I bought many "regular" releases, that just is so delightful to open, see, feel and then of course listening. It's incredible how MOFI have missed out on that subject?
It do Matters for many of us. Otherwise we could settle with a soundbar, streaming digital or something.
So thx for keeping pointing these things out.

Hi Michael - In 2013, after Mofi announced the upcoming release of the SACD and 45 of KOB I wrote them and asked about the source tape for the release. Surprisingly I got a personal response from Rob LoVerde. His exact words (copied from the email) were: "We are utilizing Mark Wilder's excellent 3-track to 2-track analog mix for our transfers." I have no idea if he neglected to mention the 4XDSD step or they weren't doing it yet. If they made a DSD copy of Wilder's analog copy then, aside from the presence of a digital step, it's two generations removed from the 3-track master that Grundman used for the Classic and Acoustic Sounds reissues.

The biggest difference is they are two different mixes. The MoFi has one audible added step in that the three track tapes were mixed to analog tape. The Classics had the three track mixed directly to the cutting lathe. The differences are mostly in the mix and the mastering.

Hi Michael, I love your informative and entertaining videos. I also appreciate how you encourage polite feedback. In that spirit I would like to respectfully suggest that presenting the choice between the new 45rpm and 33rpm UHQR versions of KOB as coming down to *sound quality* versus *convenience* is misleading. I generally prefer 33rpm versions of classic albums not because of *convenience* but because they offer a listening experience consistent with what the artist had in mind when they created the album. When Miles recorded KOB and decided on the track sequencing for it he did this based on a single album in the 33rpm format not as a double album in the 45rpm format. I want to hear KOB as Miles intended it to be heard and in the format that established its reputation as one of the greatest albums of all time. I respect your opinion that the UHQR 45rpm version sounds better and I am planning to buy that as well but for me it is not just about sound quality. I think the choice should be presented as the 45rpm UHQR offers the *ultimate in sound quality* versus the 33rpm UHQR KOB offering *a listening experience consistent with what the artist intended whilst still sounding great* Best wishes to you and keep up the good work!

Go all the way as with "A Love Supreme"; 1/4-inch 15 i.p.s. reel-to-reel. I agree with Chris Carson. I have the "Classic Records'" 'KOB' 45 r.p.m. (which I purchased from Acoustic Sounds back in the late 90's). The Sony Mastersound gold-CD has been replaced by MOFI's sacd. The vinyl is purely an investment. Bring on the SACD! (including the Steely Dan "Katy Lied"). Cheers.

    • @marrkzulunuz
      @marrkzulunuz 2 года назад +1

One more thing, Michael. I'm looking forward to any UHQR "Steely Dan" albums (SACD also). I am still paying for my new 'Rhodes-mk8' electric piano. Steely Dan, (DoobieDan), Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea are the reasons why I play the 'Rhodes'. Also, John Coltrane is why I play sax; Selmer (Paris) should be issuing the 'Model-22 Supreme' Tenor Sax this year. I'd prefer this horn over a "Mark-6" from 'Reverb. It is my opinion that audiophiles can afford their hobby. We are also musicians as well as nerds (and hoarders). I am proud of my Miles Davis SACD collection from "MOFI", but that did not stop me from collecting the Miles Davis SACDs from "Esoteric". Only the AP 'KOB' SACD could trump the MoFi. thanks

I guess you ordered these from Analogue produtions. I can see that they charge almost $60 for shipping to France (similar as for Germany I suppose): is that including importation taxes or will these extra charges are coming on top of the total (in your experience)? Thank you!

I am a happy Miles Davis-fan for over half a century. I have been listening and buying his music in all physical forms, reading books and magazines and went to 11 of his performances: in 1984 saw him 3 times in one week. At that La Vilette-Paris concert the bell of his trumpet came to within 1/2 meter of me (there is a picture of that sublime moment, published in the French magazine Actuel). I am puzzled by your extensive interest in all this sonic detail. To me, it's like being interested in the brushes, cloth and the dyes that Picasso used. I am not, but if that's your thing, be my guest. Anyway, I've always wondered about is this: whatever vinyl-edition you have, inevitably, as there is physical contact between the diamond stylus and the plastic groove (that's the word ...) the more you play it, the more wear is caused. I can hear, pretty soon, the difference between a unplayed record and one that's been through the process, say, 20 times. I don't really care about that, but what are your thoughts on this ?

I got the mofi KOB early on. I’m extremely familiar with KOB, and 2 things struck me about the mofi KOB. First, as michael suggests, the bass is overblown. Second KOB has never been the quietest album around, yet the mofi was notable for its quietness and I always wondered how they cut the noise level. Now I can attribute it to some digital manipulation.

What I would be interested in is a comparison between the Classic Records 45 rpm version and the new UHQR 45 rpm version. We know that Classic Records had it's own proprietary vinyl formula and that the Analogue Productions releases use the same metal parts created by RTI. I have observed that when RTI pressings are compared to QRP pressings, the RTI pressings are better. Because the CR and AP 45 rpm versions use the same metal parts, the difference is who pressed them.
As a side note, I have the UHQR-0004 "Kind Of Blue" version already. As with many records pressed by QRP, I have to exchange them due to poor quality or return them altogether. I did have to exchange the UHQR-0004 record I originally received because of typical QRP problems like being off-center pressings, warped records and excess surface noise. It had all these issues. The replacement record I received had no problems. Because of my personal experience with QRP pressings, I know what to look out for.

I waited for the 45rpm. It was well worth the wait. I got number 473. Before this was not one of my favorite Miles Davis albums. I liked it and recommended it to many when I worked at a record store in the early 90’s. But I was attracted to Sketches of Spain and his dive into the late 60’s and early 70’s music. Bitches Brew was fantastic! Wow! I still haven’t cancelled my MOFI of the new up-coming Bitches Brew. I am sad though, because the lies and now knowing about the digital step. But man, I’m still curious to hear that. It’s such an iconic album. But anyways, it will probably be my last MOFI. This 45rpm UHQR Kind of Blue has made me dive in and become a fly in the original sessions. It’s now, my favorite Miles Davis record. What Bernie and Chad (and his wonderful employees) did was move it from a legendary performance to a spiritual journey. I’ve never heard an album like this before. I know my ears and my mind has grown since I started to listen to Kind of Blue. This time it was such a fresh experience. I can only imagine what these two could do to Jimi Hendrix’s “Electric Ladyland”. Yes, the price was more for this UHQR, but man the quality was unbelievable! This experience is the closest thing to time travel that I know. Chad has the market of time travel cornered. There is no one even close!

    Hello Michael,
thank you for this post. I have both UHQR versions and can only agree with you absolutely.
Many years ago I started collecting different versions/pressings from many countries. In the meantime there have actually been 117 different releases on vinyl. Yes, that seems crazy, pointless and/or exaggerated to many collectors. But so what! ;-) I have always enjoyed comparing and owning the issues. But maybe more on that later...
The 45 rpm pressing from Analogue Productions showed me once again how decisive the pressing at 45 rpm is for the sound. As you have already explained, the 45 rpm pressings simply have more space in the groove to store the so-called sound signals and pass them on to the needle of the pickup system.
I was pleasantly surprised by the first track "So What". I honestly said I didn't expect to hear such a significant difference. But that's how it is. I own a few 45 rpm pressings but have rarely heard such a big difference from the 33. The music is much more "airy" and has a lot of space. Miles' trumpet playing literally touched me. The two saxes play even more clearly and impressively than on the already very good 33 rpm pressing.
The 45 in connection with the clear vinyl and the really very (!) good press quality puts the 33 in the shade a bit. The better is just the enemy of the good.
I am glad that I own and can enjoy the 45s. Very good job Chad Kassem!
Best wishes for you and your shop. Stay healthy and happy!
    Thomas from Hamburg

I agree with you about the heavy handedness of the bass in the MOFI 45rpm Michael. It's simply out of control.
I can't wait to get my 45 rpm UHQR KOB to compare against my Classic Records 45 rpm - which I should add IS a 4 single-sided product and *THE BEST* I've heard to date! Even better than Chad’s previous and very fine sounding 33 1/3 rpm UHQR version which clearly had to be dropped to the #2 slot.
So I wonder if at the end this 4 single-sided / 45 rpm Classic Records edition will still beat the Analogue Productions UHQR edition?
    Hmmm to be continued...

I own 33 1/3 version's UHQR and Classic Record version. I can see that they've used the same metal master from the matrix numbers. For example CS8163-C on the second vinyl (side C) of the Classic Record, that became the side A of the UHQR version, The last "C" of CS8163-C was crossed out and "A" is engraved on the side A of UHQR disc.
What I don't know is how Analog Production created the 45rpm version from the 33 1/3 metal? Do they also have the 45 RPM metal too? I know they don't have the tape.

I just received my 45rpm Kind of Blue: Great Review Always M45: The 45rpm does sound good as the 33rpm. It sounds as what a 45rpm should. Not better than the 33.3 rpm, but as it should sound as a 45rpm. The 33.3 rpm sounds really good and I think that is the marketing genius? Of Chad K. at AcousticSounds. The 33.3rpm sounds so good that people were anticipating the 45rpm to sound even stellar and that, that was the best marketing genius of Chad K. Great job Chad! Kudos to you! The 45rpm does sound very good as it is an analogue production standard of excellence. Does it beat the 33.3rpm? NO it doesn’t. Should a 33.3rpm owner buy the 45rpm? Hell ya! A true audiophile must own the best! But the 33.3rpm is as good as it gets. They are both standards of excellence of their rpm. If I owned the 45rpm, I don’t think I would need to own the 33.3rpm. According to a post I read, "if you look at the Mofi info says they used "Dolby SR analog remix master" because that is only what was allowed by Sony to be available to them and this has everything to do with how the Mofi sounded and had nothing to do with EQ choices. Bernie Grundman with Classic records was allowed and able to get the actual analogue 3-track master tape in 1995 which Chad Kassem is using the metal parts as he says to make the Analogue Productions version. Bernie Grundman's equipment back then was able to take the 3-track feed directly to be remixed down to stereo at the lathe I believe because he had it modified to be able to do this. I believe it was Mark Wilder at Sony who created this "Dolby SR analog remix master" which Mofi was forced to use. So the real issue is Mofi is not just a copy but their version is totally affected by this Dolby SR technology."

I did not buy the UHQR 45 yet. Oops $150.
A lot of MOFI/MFSL LPs have a lot of bass and I think that's a trademark.
For example, old MFSL AAA vinyls like Aja and Sticky Fingers have a lot of bass.
The recent AAA David Crosby If I Could Just Remember My Name has a lot of bass too.
Personally I think it depends on which album this extra bass is present on.
Kind of blue should certainly not have this extra bass and that is, in addition to the much better separation, one of the reasons why the UHQR is much better.

I got the 33rpm UHQR (at £130 i damn near didnt) and still question myself why now because for sound Q its not £130 good and I definately dont feel its 3 times as good as the Mofi 45rpm, which cost me 1/3rd of the UHQR when i bought a few yrs back. Now, this same mastering comes along in a 45 UHQR and its £180 in the UK.... this is where my common sense finally kicks in and concludes..... the 33rpm will actually sound better than the 45rpm if i use the £180 to upgrade my stylus/cart. Its at this point the hobby becomes an obsessiveness bordering on madness.
Unfortunately i can only be negative because NO record should retail at anything close to these prices (i pray values hold or rise of my copies so i csn recoup when im bored of this record again) but the hobby is full of folks who wont bat an eyelid at paying ever more insane prices for A RECORD. I just cant be one of them! Ultimately if i never even get to hear the 45 of this i will be happier!
