- Ian Hislop, editor of Private Eye looks back on 2017 with regular guests Craig Brown, Lewis Macleod, Jan Ravens and John Sessions.
Private Eye is a British fortnightly satirical and current affairs news magazine, founded in 1961. It is published in London and has been edited by Ian Hislop since 1986.
Fabulous cast; a real treat to see them perform.
Love the way Jan Ravens switches from Theresa May to Alex Jones. If there are any Americans reading this, our Alex Jones is an inoffensive Welsh lady, an ideal host for The One Show.
Jan Ravens does May to a T, but her Alex Jones was rather poor. She didn't sound at all Welsh, and I speak as a Welshman.
Fair comment.
I'm an American and I love your Alex Jones and would trade our Alex Jones for yours anytime. ha. The British sense of humor is more to my taste. I'm part British Scottish and Irish. I'm so glad British shows are available on RUclips.
Thank you. Assuming that you are still alive and not having died of "covid" (well, it was something else, but you were useful, Pfizer and Hospital profits and all that), our Colin Baker over here is an inoffensive journalist who stands as a castrated example of what he could have been (an Alex Jones in America).
Damn , those Impersonations were good.Brilliantly delivered.
The One Show skit was side-achingly funny. Jan Ravens is magnificent.
Just seeing this in 2020 but Jan Ravens is the greatest - along with Bremner (Adore Bremner Bird and Fortune) and Tracy Ullman...
What a brilliant show! Thanks for putting it on.
Absolutely fantastic stuff! Thanks ever so much for this and the others you have put together. Brilliant. Cheers.
Thanks so much for posting.
Great work, Ian Hislop!
That was amazing!
Wow, everyone's voice work is very good. May and Trump were incredible impersonations, Private Eye should hire an animator and do cartoons.
Sam Harkins great idea. Hope they do it.
Ian Hislop contributed scripts to Spitting Image.
Jan Ravens did voices on Spitting Image.
Apart from the Bear Grylls bit, this was just superb. Such an incredible array of talents, so much so that you don't even blink when they occasionally stumble over their lines. That John Sessions monologue at the end was hysterical.
23:15 Harry Enfield as a dalek 😂😂😂😂
Lewis Macleod's Trump/Obama/Clinton and Boris and Jan's Dianne Abbott are utterly brilliant.
Brilliant! Thanks to all!
“Ian told me.”
T. Tiro Marie never forget 😂😂
John Sessions was a truly funny man. Such great humour.
Jan Ravens Diane Abbott is Genius...
The Trump impersonation was spot-on. The show was great
Beg to differ, worst Trump impression, sentences had grammar, thoughts were coherent and limited self gratification.
Agreed. It was great.
Tut tut. Where are your courageous Biden impersonations? Or have you threatened to sue Biden for having infringed on your own copyrighted behavior (this is a medical moron-cretin we are discussing, in case you've overlooked that inconvenient fact).
@@GadgetAndKite Nice run-on sentence you've crafted there, pal. In fact, quite Trumpian. Look, if you're rank jealous, well, just admit it. No harm done.
@@donreed This is from 2017, one year into Trump’s presidency, and a long way from the Democratic primary for 2020.
Golly well done, Hislop. Great voice work all around. Alternative Fake News!!!
Good substitute for Charlie Brooker’s 2017 Wipe
Wonderful parody of Lucy Worsley's voice, style, and attitude.
Gold
27:20 Sport's commentary is amazing.
This was like an episode of Spitting Image
This is fucking hilarious! Comedy gold.
Late to the party but I enjoyed it. Hislop sounded like he'd been drinking and John Sessions was over egging the pud as per. But nothing to stop the lols
Thanks enjoyed this very much ta
Sir Herbert Gusset sounds like Mr. Grainger from Are You Being Served.
basically, this is Spitting Image without the puppets..
40:11 Diane Abbott 😂
Brucie would have loved that.
Victoria Hislop seems to be the de facto editor of Private Eye.
Quite Brilliant!
I may be dumb, but which DJ's name is rhyming slang for something going wrong?
apparently the phrase is "Its all gone Pete Tong" = wrong
Is it wrong that I think Ian's classical Latin pronunciation was as sexy as it was refreshing?
Pat Roe Whoa! Put on the brakes, quick!! Ahhhhh
yes Pat , incredibly wrong.
Yes. Technically incorrect. I'm sure you will agree, on reflection, that it is vastly more sexy than it is refreshing, not equally so.
No one in our lifetimes has ever actually heard the actual, historical Romans (e.g., 52 B.C.) speak. This jibber-jabber about "classical pronunciation" is a "the check is in the mail" dodge.
Very funny !!
I take the bins out....... :-(
Strong and Stable.
Wonder how they feel about the Andrew jokes now.
'um' Ian 'um' Hislop 'um' does''um' say um a 'um' lot
I take the bins out.
John Sessions as Arthur Lowe sounds very similar to John Sessions as Alan Rickman.
Where's Francis Wheen. Love his wit.
Pleasant but ‘gummy’ satire. In an age of The Thick of It and Jonathon Pie you’re still offering us Yes, Prime Minister.
but Yes Prime minister was a work of genius. It's like saying "good football skills but in an age of Ronaldo and Aguero you're still offering us Pele"
Sittingduck I’m not attacking Yes (Prime) Minister, I enjoyed the show and the book. My comment is that the world has moved on. To follow your football analogy, I accept Pele was an amazing player, but in this modern game, I doubt he’d have as much impact. (Obviously entering the realms of opinions not facts here, but hard data wouldn’t be easy to come by)
Pele would get his ass kicked and Yes Prime minister is outdated ...yes things have moved on but I'd like to be 1/2 as good a player as Pele was back in the day and yes prime minister still is extremely funny.
Because something isn't cutting edge doesn't mean it isn't worth anything. Everything doesn't need to move on. The eye has been making me laugh for decades and probably will for a good few more. I love Pie too (I'm seeing him in March) and I’d love to stop and chat but I’d rather have type 2 diabetes. :D ;)
John sessions can fuck off though
Sittingduck no arguments here!
Ian. Your publication is the only one I trust. Bring your review to Edinburgh sometime....don't recommend August, we're wall to wall big name comics trying out what we can see for free on the telly. And entitled people called Hugo and Jocasta thinking they invented feminism and socialism.
29,740 views, 389 'likes' - some people are very generous, it must be Christmas
Once you've rigged a U.S. presidential election, it's a cinch to do it anywhere else.
That is a hell of an accent.
British satirical humour at it's best. To the 21 down votes I say lololololololol
Google is extraordinarily sensitive to their clients (you) and have eliminated --- have you noticed this, above? --- the "down vote" count in order to spare your tender feelings (in point of fact, many examples of G having out-right deleted down votes have been noticed in the past decade).
Under rehearsed. Amusing in places.
Entertaining and well executed satirical nonsense!
The majority of leave voters were from the south and middle class (see Prof Danny Dorling). Brown looks popular this year. My point is that the media has depicted a false narrative of the stereotypics insuler northerner.
The older and less educated were more likely to vote leave by a fucking huge margin...
jonnie thumbs Yes, the younger and more privileged voted remain, l haven not said otherwise. My point was that the narrative depicted by the media is factually incorrect.
oh ian. how sad
I love the Lucy Worsley sketch. I find her so annoying!
Published by St. Martin's Press; that's all we need to know.
Moar Latin Ian!
too many ads
I was surprised at the ums and r from Ian and the stumbling over words
Me too. I love the man, but he did seem rather amateurish. Surprising in view of all the TV work he does.
34:28 - well this aged…
I have
Harry Enfield isnt an impressionist, he's more of a characturist, wouldve preffered rory bremner.
B-off-G
Ian’s delivery not as slick as last year.
Jan Ravens just fancies the arse off Lewis Macleod. It's palpable.
Whoooh, Saucy.
get it together hislop, you're sounding senile
Brilliant line-up: love Jan Ravens. But I canny stand John Sessions: a preening hamster over-egging everything until it's flat as a witch's tit.
I represent the Association of Witch's Tits. Your writ, sir.
Make fun of JC Ian, but the Liberals aren't going to solve anything.
They certainly solved the problem of how to blow getting into No. 10 despite PM May dissolving like the Wicked Witch of the West and Boorish Johnson doing more women in than Jack The Ripper.
Women's voice is a bit annoying
Fusty old bunch of suits.
Sorry, it was clumsy, outdated, self-indulgent and to be frank, Peter Cook, Richard Ingrams and Willie Rushton would be saddened..
Just a repeat of the crap Hislop sprouts every week on HIGNFY. fUNNY ONCE BUT FOR GODS SAKE GET NEW MATERIAL.
Oh dear. How does one explain this to the willfully obtuse?
Hislop's and Private Eye's work is based on the news, in the UK and abroad. 'New material' is therefore very much dependent on there being new material in the news, in the UK and abroad.
Also, it's "God's sake" with an apostrophe, and I rather think and hope you meant "spouts", rather than "sprouts".
Finally, I assume you are at liberty, and therefore were under no obligation to watch this. Since you regard it as "crap", why put yourself through such pain?
I watch comedy programmes expecting them to be both original and funny this was neither and I have a wicked sense of humour. I just get pissed off with them talking about Mays husband but never a mention of Corbyns foreign fluff. I mean sprouts because they are all vegetables. The impersonations were excellent but all we had seen before. Boring, sorry and so so predictable, I could have written it for them.
Have you thought of having a brain you moron. Everybody has the right to be stupid but you abuse the privilege My homour exists unlike yours which is simply a figment of your stunted imagination.
Tuten Vanman If it's a 'review of 2017' then it's all old hat and there's not going to be anything new by definition is there?
Wayne
Having a go at Corbys wife and his sex with Abbott, Clinton, EU twats, left wing retards ,London so called football teams, womens rights, trans sexuals the list is endless. This is all old hat. It is supposed to be a revue not a rehash, very disappointing and very lazy.
