I use this lens for indoor shots of people, It's really a wonderful lens and compares nicely to the Fuji 56 1.2. I know the tradeoffs of autofocus etc could be an issue for some, but shooting manually is freeing for me and this lens really makes for some fantastic images..esp. at it's price point.
Dustin, I just got into photography and was debating between getting this as my first major lens or the Sigma 16mm 1.4 for my Sony A6000. Because of your excellent, in-depth reviews and my fascination with the painstaking rewards of shooting manually, my Rokinon 50mm 1.2 is on its way today. I'm going to be getting the Rokinon 21mm 1.4, as well, based on your review of it. You do great work, sir. I've been subscribed for about a week now and your videos are the perfect balance of technical and practical. Thank you very much!
A realistic appraisal of this excellent value lens - I like mine immensely for its wide range of usable apertures and optical effect as an f1.2 optic. Good photo samples too - your daugheter is adorable. Thanks for the review.
Great review Dusty, as always! Really appreciate all the work and love you put into reviews. Is it just me, or does the new Rokinon 50mm SP f1.2 look a lot like the Zeiss, Milvus 50mm f1.4? Trying to decide between the 2, as I could purchase a used Milvus at the same price point as a new Samyang SP f1.2.
Thanks for the insights. Regarding the cine lens, is there any difference between this lens and the cine - or in general, besides the declicked aperture ring? I don't like the clicked aperture very much, but I'm only doing stills photography. I was considering just getting the cine version of they're basically the same. I suppose the focus ring would be as convenient on the cine lens as well. Thanks for any insights you can give.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks, appreciate it. Also, want to say that I really love your reviews. Few reviewers are taking the time and care to make sure to give a thorough review, but you are definitely among them. Always one of my first, whenever I try to get some information about lenses.
I really enjoyed the videos about the lens. Very neatly done and perfect information density. Can you recommend this lens to use on a full frame Sony? I am searching for a sharp lens with good bokeh when wide open. I really want to use it wide open. I am in doubt between this lens and any other f/1.4 around or under the same price point. Does this lens beats, or has equal good sharpness, as the f/1.4 lenses, with regard to price, around there?
Thank you for the quick response. I know that it was desgined for APS-C. However, sometimes you can use these lenses on a full frame without too much vignetting and such problems. I'll stick to a f/1.4 than I guess. Do you maybe have a few suggestions?
Hi Dustin, i have Canon eos M3 cam. does this lens fit to my cam?? just wanna double check before buying. Thank you all of your video s. very helpful :).
Hi Jamie, I'm afraid you are asking me to compare from memory two lenses for two different systems that I reviewed six years ago. I'm afraid my memory isn't that good!
This wouldn't be a great choice, no. The focal length equivalent is 75mm, which is fairly long, and manual focus for video would be tough in a vlogging situation. Your best options for vlogging are lenses like the Sigma 16mm F1.4. bhpho.to/33ghhKT
Did you take RAW and process them or JPG out of camera? I ask as you talk about CA which is easy to get rid of in PP o I guess you left lens correction allow. and no talk of vignetting
I usually shoot some of both, but when I report on lenses, I don't report on what is possible after post processing or correction - that becomes about software and user performance, not lens performance.
+StrawberrySilica I've not compared them head to head, but optically they are probably pretty close. It's not a fair comparison in a sense, though, as I tested the 50mmm f/1.4 on a full frame body while this one on a crop.
i like to replicate a very blurry background and focus on the subject mostly in videography shooting in 1080p eos-m system, much like the feel of this video: ruclips.net/video/HMdoaut_bjQ/видео.html do you think either of these 2 lens can achieve that or you already got some other recommendations in your mind?
Thanks for making this IQ test video, from having the Lecia 42.5 f1.2 for a while, this lens seems to be 80 or 90% of it's IQ, plus a bit more reach, for a way lower price to boot.. since I don't pixel peep for video, and MF is actually better in most situations, I think I'll have to get one of these. Plus wide open the CA seems pretty similar to the lecia... hah.
Dustin Abbott I've heard people rave about it because of it's f/1.2, but it seems wide open it's not really amazing, until stopped down. I suppose for the money it's acceptable
It's not perfect at 1.2 but so is not any other 1.2 lens. From what I've seen this is top performer at 1.2. I mean look at the same zeiss 1.4 and even stopped down samyang still wide open feels optically better.

It is a nice lens, for sure.
Thank you Dustin, I am just another fellow minister who enjoys photography!
Awesome. Thanks for checking in!

Thanks all around!
Hi,Dustin! Did you compare this lens with fuji 56mm-1.2 I need to know about image sharpness! Thanks beforehand!
I did not. I don't have a Fuji body.

I would probably go for the Milvus if that is in fact that case. Your resale value will be better, for one, and Zeiss color is special.

The focus ring on the cine version does stick out a fair bit to make it easier to gear. That can be a bit of an adjustment for just stills use.

Thanks Dustin. You're really helpful. Also I love the intro musics you use. Where do you get them?
+Nima Momtahan I create the musical intros - mostly in Apple Garage Band.
+Dustin Abbott You're an amazing artist
+Nima Momtahan That's kind. Thank you.
Good video! How does it compare to a Voigtlander f0.95 and to an Olympus pro f1.2? Thanks
I'm afraid I've not used either of those lenses, so I can't comment.

It's not designed for full frame, unfortunately, only APS-C Sony bodies.
Thank you for the quick response.

HackingDutchman
You could only experiment with that on a Sony mount, as it won't fit other systems.
Good review. The defocus onion effect and blade effect is serious flaw and is a deal breaker for me.
+John Adams It is for some, not for others. That's the reason why I try to demonstrate it all

Definitely. That is the body that I reviewed it on.

I see, point well made. I didn't realize that this was for an APS-C sized sensor only. Thanks!

NP!
ore Samyang 50 mm 1.4 with autofocus would be a better lens?
For what camera? You are cross-referencing an APS-C lens for mirrorless
Sony 6500
I'm thinking about getting this and does it help having the EVF to focus?
Absolutely. Being able to magnify the image in the EVF makes manual focus much simpler
Thanks
Thanks :)
+Enkoder Novi Glad to help out!
how does it compare to kamlan F1.1? does it worth the 3x price?
That depends on your shooting priorities. The Samyang is much sharper and has better contrast. Bokeh rendering might favor the Kamlan.

I think the Samyang would be worth the extra money, and you might consider getting the cine version of the lens.
is this lens good value for money?
It is a strong value.

I found it a pretty nice little optic, myself.
does it works on fuji xt1? do i need an adapter?
you can buy it for fuji X mount so you don't need any adapters.
You can get it in a native Fuji mount for your camera.
SKSWOOD93 did you end up getting this lens for your Fuji, if so how does it perform with the x trans sensor?
no Sony alpha mount? :(
+Ben Szirony I'm afraid not. These are only designed for a crop sensor mirrorless mount.
do it works on Nikon?
+Ch Chand Tanha There is no Nikon mount for it.
What camera did you shoot these footages in?
I used a Canon EOS M3 camera to review the lens on.
Thanks, I'm assuming on a M43 mount we'd see a similar result on IQ
I don’t see why not. The focal length changes because of the crop factor, but not the quality of the optics.
Over rated lens I feel
Overrated? Interesting, as I really haven't heard much talk about it. What do you feel is overrated about it?
Dustin Abbott I've heard people rave about it because of it's f/1.2, but it seems wide open it's not really amazing, until stopped down. I suppose for the money it's acceptable
It's not perfect at 1.2 but so is not any other 1.2 lens. From what I've seen this is top performer at 1.2. I mean look at the same zeiss 1.4 and even stopped down samyang still wide open feels optically better.
For that money, please feel free to enlighten us with better options.
dat potato bokeh
will this work on the sony a7rii?
Only in APS-C mode. It's not a full frame lens.
