I've owned my 2001 savage since 2007 and always had a shop change oil just because i didn't know how. Now that shop closed doors and I'm forced to do it myself. Because of your video I was able to do it and it is a cake walk thanks to you! Much appreciate the tip. Ill be doing it myself from now on!!
put a foam pad on the ground underneath your hand when you're breaking loose the drain plug so you don't bang your wrist or knuckles too badly. use aluminum foil to guide the oil away from the pipes and leaking everywhere.
Good tips, thanks. I have a 2015. I bought it on a whim with just 500 miles. Thought I would sell it after 1 season but it has won my heart. There is something about it's simplicity that I like. Even did the 1st service with valve adjustment myself. It has a Dyna pipe and A/F adjustment. Maybe you can vlog more info about servicing it. I do wish It had a trip mileage or fuel gauge. I put a mechanical only petcock on it because California fuel will destroy the vacuum diaphragm. If you don't get the S40's charm then you dislike it, there is no in-between with it.
great job, thank you. one question, there is a wire going into the lower part of the motor just to the left of the sight glass for oil. Do you know what that is for? I'm wondering if either a temp sensor, or oil level sensor? I have not been able to find out what it is for. thank you
Whenever I'm not sure what something is, I look for a parts microfiche (parts exploded view) of the motorcycle, find the part, and then look at the table that lists everything to find out what the heck I'm looking at. Hope this helps!
Bike never on the side stand for any of this. Upright all the time. The sidestand is out in some of the shots, but the front wheel is locked in a vice and the bike is upright.

I have this bike. Gets punked a lot in media but the like it as i am older and disabled. Thanks for making this video. Maybe take a stab at the valve adjustment?
Hey there! Glad you enjoyed the video. I don't have the S40 in the garage anymore, but my ex still has one. If she ever needs the valves done and brings it by I might take a stab at it but... don't hold your breath haha :) I have a video on how to bleed the brakes that might interest you though: ruclips.net/video/PY3z5NxWM8A/видео.html
Do you stand it upright to check the oil level, or at rest? Also, I opened the stock filter and there was no o-ring, and none with the replacement filter. Do I absolutely need it?
Everything is done with the motorcycle upright. Kickstand is out but if you look carefully you'll see shadow and reflection under it because the bike is never on the stand. If your oil filter isn't seated properly, what's the point in even having oil filter in there at all? I would get the new o-ring. Filter not seated properly isn't going to be doing it's job the way it's supposed to.
Thanks. However, most of don't have a m/cycle lift so have to do things on the ground, and without a centre stand, it is a pain in the whatever. Thankfully, my wife holds my S40 upright when checking oil, filling with oil etc.
Enjoying a lot more time on two wheels than in the previous ones. Before I was always worried about not being available for a call and missing out. Now my business is still growing slowly, but it's enough that I trust that I can take some time to myself and everything will be okay... I think... For now... We'll see lol
Great video!!! I just purchased a 2017 s40. Where can I buy aftermarket seats and accessories? I just want a trusted site. If you have any input I’d appreciate it. Cheers. I’m located in the us. Thank you for your time

You can use whatever you like. Mineral oil is fine. That motor hasn't changed much in 40 years when they didn't have full synthetics for cruisers like we do today.
Not sure about that... my buddy just did his oil and the next morning the filter cover blew an oil filer sized hole out the side of it.... he definitely fucked up somewhere.

Thank you. My first time working on my savage 650. You have been very helpful.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, I appreciate it. Enjoy your ride!
Thanks bro!
I’m a new owner and need all the help and instruction I can get.
You make it simple enough
Happy to help! think about your brake fluid next! ruclips.net/video/PY3z5NxWM8A/видео.html
great insight thank you!
its my first mine is 2008 red and has 9,800 miles
Hey, thanks for that. Congrats. Change the oil every year, brake fluid every two years, and keep it clean and it will last you forever.

Did you refill on side stand or did you leave it "level" after the drain plug?
Bike never on the side stand for any of this. Upright all the time. The sidestand is out in some of the shots, but the front wheel is locked in a vice and the bike is upright.
If you do it with the bike on the sidestand you won't get all the old oil out and you won't refill it properly either which could damage your motor.
@@YouMotorcycle Thanks. Good to know.
Great Video! Do u have a vid on how to easily drain the gas without removing the tank?
Thanks!

Great video. Any suggestions for the best compatible wheel stands to purchase for the Suzuki S40? I have a 2007.
What's driving you to want a wheel stand, rather than, say, a jack?
Excellent video.
Thanks very much Laurie!

Everytime i try and tip the bike upright to look in oil window I feel like I might tip the bike over on my head lol
great videos! no extra bs !!!
Thanks man. Happy to help!
@@YouMotorcycle how do u measure oil capacity after fill it ? sideway on kick stand or straight ?
Always straight up on every motorcycle

where did you find crash bars for the S40? I have had no luck

Surprised they do not supply new o-rings with the filter. Hope you get out for some end of summer fun man !

Don’t you need the little oil filter spring in the new filter?
Put everything back as it was. I probably didn't show it all to keep it brief.
Thank you for this !
Happy to help! I have a review of this bike coming up in a week or so, stay tuned!
do you know what the part number for the bigger o ring is or where i can get one?
Any Suzuki dealer. I don't recall the part number.

Good bike !
i owned this
I agree.
Hey mate, is there a problem if i use 10w30 in my S40?
Why would you want to?
10w-40 full sintetic? Semi??
You can use whatever you like. Mineral oil is fine. That motor hasn't changed much in 40 years when they didn't have full synthetics for cruisers like we do today.
what size is the crush washer?
Don't know, sorry :(
My oil came out that tube to the right of the drain plug what does that mean help help please
I don't know what hose you're referring to, but it sounds like it's probably a drain hose. Was the bike knocked over recently or was it overfilled?
Obrigado 🇧🇷✌😎
De nada, Luiz!
For the oil filter cover.. All 3 bolts broken even at 5Nm😢
Hey Gary, sorry to hear this. Are you sure the torque wrench you used was calibrated correctly? Some of them can be faulty
Any one know we're to get in inside gasket???
From the dealer, same as any other part
