Totally agree! Fark off with the landfill pollution nonsense. That's on everything; way too much packaging in the world.
It should be an option... but they pre package everything... maybe they send stuff to the OEMs like BladeHQ so their customers can request they are added to the shipping box.
I dont know man I use the heck out of the zipper pouches that come with Civivi knives. especially when I sell a knife and want to give it a little extra protection in shipping ill just throw it in a civivi zipper pouch. its better than bubble wrap or packing peanuts. I also use the stickers for my toolbox and coffee thermos. ive nearly got them totally covered now.
I agree!
The punches are OK, but the rest is ridiculous.
I like the cleaning cloths
Sure. Until you have 20 of them.
@@phillxor Save them for days when you want a luxurious ass wiping session.

@CedricAda I’m significantly older than you & do please let me say, “old man yells at cloud.” 😂
this video is definitely that vibe haha
Pete we all have said pretty much the same. Save the marketing crap & fancy box & put the money in the knives !
So there's a section of the knife market that will be ok approaching a sketchy looking bloke like me going "you got any of them... knives?"
I open my coat and pull out some sandwich bags full of pocket knives
"oh yeah, you like a little taste huh? How much you got?"
Yeah I'd rather see a better fit and finish than stickers and trinkets. Maybe have a more expensive version for the "unboxing" crowd.
spot on!
yall know that crap adds literally pennies if its even adding cost at all per knife when bought in massive bulk like civivi etc does... right? like... youre not going to be getting improvements in steel or general quality because they decided to not include $.03 (if even that) worth of crap. its not an either or situation. if you dont like it toss it
I ike the cleaning cloths but the packaging is more geared to new buyers as it's part of the opening experience and making the product feel special which directly triggers the dopamine response and will help fuel the compulsive buying that normally happens when first getting into knives, but yes I would prefer either cheaper prices or better materials. I haven't bought a new knife in over 2 years now though
been a while for me too, AND i have a knife channel LOL, just not into anything lately....
I love the little protective pouches the Civivis come in. I use them for all sorts of storage.
But generally not for storing knives.
I use one for a darts set.
I couldn't find another good use for them. Too big on the outside compared to what fits inside.
I love the extra bits. The stickers go on hard hats and tool boxes. The cases I store my knives in when not in use.
I got a Gooseworks knife that just came in a sturdy little bubble wrap ziplock to protect it. I thought that was perfect.
Agree. Strongly. This can not be overstated.
The cloths work pretty brilliant for my eyewear, either sunglasses or regular glasses 👌
The pouches are actually nicely stackable in a drawer away from my son. I don’t wanna have them just laying around so I will keep the knives in a pouch or original box with the knife shaped cutout. I also like how spyderco puts the foam pad in their boxes so I can store them in there. All the stickers and pamphlets and cloths and 3x4 inch business cards can just stop being produced.
I am absolutely with you on this. My life collection runs to about 300 pieces, they all fit in a decent sized cabinet, but I have covered after cupboard full of boxes. I don’t often sell my knives, but when I do, everybody wants the box Stickers, the cloth, the slip or whatever junk came with it. This really came ahead when I bought a Jack Wolf knife. The two cardboard boxes, the aluminium tube, the full size cloth, the two stickers, the pretty shonky lather slip and most of all the pog, completely unwanted. However they must’ve cost a fortune and need to be kept should I ever decide to sell the knife. Even with all of that junk the knife is only worth 2/3 of what I paid for it. Without the junk, I’d be lucky to get back half what I paid. Marketing over substance!
Same😂
But I think it's nice to get the extras if you are getting it as a gift for someone who doesn't have a knife. Might make it seem more special to them.
There is this same complaint/gripe/old man shouting at cloud from the older generations of Scotch drinkers who don’t like it when their favourite brands come in collectors cases with free glen cairns or hats. For the guy buying his weekly/daily dram it is all bin liner, destined for the tip, but there is also the segment of non alcoholic, first time drinkers that will buy something because of the packaging and tat. People that equate the free junk you get (incorrectly) with a more high end product. I think it is ok to be angry with marketing people that push expensive, ecologically unsound packaging garbage. Then again I am also old and like yelling at clouds
The zipper pouches I agree with, it's not really needed in most circumstances. I WILL say, Spyderco needs to improve on their packaging a bit though. 3 out of the last 5 I've purchased arrived with damaged boxes because the knives rattle around inside and the tray insert isn't reinforced. I can't say I've had that experience from "pouched" knives, so maybe they're on to something?
The stickers and polishing cloths and stuff (Civivi seems to be most egregious I've experienced) is all a part of their marketing. Same way McDonalds (Macca's?) puts their logo on everything, so people recognize it, even if it's just litter. Not including them isn't going to miraculously have that budget be reinvested to upgrade the steel or other materials of the knife. I guess they hope you'll slap it on the side of your tool chest at work or something so other people see it. It's a relic of the past for the white collar workers who tend to have more disposable income for knife collecting, but I guess it still works since so many companies do it. The cloths might be useful if they were large enough, but almost all of them are too small to be useful.
Oh, I DO like extra hardware to be included in the packaging though (screws, springs, maybe an extra clip if it's not fancy). if we could standardize THAT instead of companies' promotional extras, that'd be great.
The most they should add is a branded microfibre cloth. That is cushion for shipping and usefull for maintainance.
I've been on both sides of this, as a newcomer you really appreciate having the extra bit of stuff that comes with your knife: A place to store it (sometimes with room for an extra knife), something to clean it with, and a couple of stickers for the inner child
That being said, once you "graduate" to owning an actual display case, knife roll, etc. where you can keep your addiction organized and nicely presented, the pouches will just store the very same things they came with
But where else are they gonna put your limited lifetime warranty QR code?
Knife companies should package knives in the barest, most basic, cheapest way possible (passing the savings on to the consumer), and then offer a Brand promotion package (stickers, brochure, cloths, etc.), for a small fee (10 bucks or something), for people that are interested.
I suggested ages ago on a makers page, that if your going to put a knife in a pouch, at least make the pouch molle compatible and usable for edc etc.
Yup - also making a practical and usable pouch wouldn't cost them an extra cent.
The "welcoming package" makes them much better gifts, especially to people who aren't already deep in the "hobby" like all of us.
Those of us that buy more of the "Funko Pop! Knives" don't get that crap in our boxes.
I like the goodies... but if I'm honest, I have way too many of those pouches laying around! 😂
I wish the pouches were at least large enough for glasses.
I agree. I like that I get a sticker that my toddler takes and sticks somewhere creative.
As someone with a lot of Civivis, I feel this pain.Oh, I don't mind some extra microfibre cloths around, like others have pointed out, they're great for cleaning glasses with. The stickers, I have no use for, but at least they're recyclable paper products... at least I'm putting them in the paper recycling anyway. But the pouches.... aside from one that I keep my Kaweco Liliputs in, I fear they're nothing but landfill. It honestly makes me less apt to pull the trigger on a new Civivi, even if I'm taken with the design. I hope they stop with the Christmas cracker approach to packaging.
The way I see it, is every pocket knife should really be the buyers first and only pocket knife. It's almost definitely not, but it should be. If you got either of those knives as an 18th birthday present from your uncle then I think having a posh box would be more appropriate in that context. Not generally a fan of tat and the pouches are landfill, but I do like stickers! The same one every time is lame though.
I liked it the first time I bought a civivi, now I have a mountain of zip pouches and I hate them
A small cardboard box is all that's needed. 👍
LOL, favorite video, as I look off to the left at the mound of Amazon boxes this week.
Agreed! 👍 Although occasionally they will come with a cool container but the zipper pouches arent necessary, I could make all of those I want very easily.
The box for the Benchmade Adira might be the most extreme.
just saw it... huuuge
I love the cloth and use them up a lot.
I totally agree. I get all the crap in the box. I feel guilty about throwing it away, and I'll never use any of it whatsoever..
I totally get and appreciate what you are saying and agree about the waste. I definitely don’t need excessive packaging but with that said I do actually use zip pouches and cleaning clothes. But if they suddenly went away and I got even slightly better fit and finish I’d gladly take that instead.
I very much enjoy getting the microfiber cloths... feel like I never have enough of those
I need a giant zippy taco to keep all my zippy tacos in.
Totally agree with the packaging! On a sode note i got the racoon button lock and really like it. Great little beater knife that's surprisingly fun to use
Yeah, I have a few of those Civivi pouches and others sitting empty in a drawer. Simple compostable packaging would be great.
sweet teddy fresh hoodie👀
300 + = Event
200 - = Compulsion
Sounds about right to me
Opening a Civivi box with a 15V spyderco is the ultimate flex
I like the pouches and cloths, and the stickers keep them coming. Nana...lol
I wholeheartedly agree! Excess packaging and tat is just annoying.
This one's a matter of perspective I think. A buddy and I send knives to each other often, and those pouches come in very handy for that. I agree with the stickers and paperwork though, they almost always go in the trash.
“It’s a compulsion…..”
Pete, I did not need to be called out like that! :p
LOL, i don't need the stuff to remind me of my embarrassing compulsions......That May be the most insightful thing I have heard in a long time......
This is highly entertaining. If companies stop including pouchs, stickers, cloths,etc.. they wont change production of there products. The saved money will be a higher profit margin for the company.
Have found the pouch kinda handy for travelling. It stops airlines winging about loose knives in baggage
I don’t need the fluff either but I also don’t need to be screamed at by a cat after the video either 😝🤣🤨
The cleaning cloth is fine by me; you can use this for glasses etc - keep one in your jacket, car, backpack: doesn't take up a lot of space and can come in handy. I wouldn't mind the pouches if they had some added value like compartments, webbing or even a belt loop or something that would make it useful outside of simply being the storage for one knife... The rest of the packaging and "goodies" is just wasteful, I have to agree. I bought a lot of 10 new old stock jack knives once and they came all stuffed in the simplest cardboard box divided by waxed paper - good enough for me. No need for magnet closures and all that.
Haha. I feel you. But i do like the pouches as someone who buys and sells on the secondary, they're convenient for shipping..
Extra hardware : yeah ! The rest: Nay!
I like the microfiber cloths! I use them to clean my phone screen. I will be mad at you if they stop including them... like we don't get a charger with a cell phone anymore.
I can see both sides of the fence on this one. As somebody that doesn't buy a lot of knives getting a sticker and the like is nice to get. Cleaning cloth could be put towards multiple other uses I guess. I don't own any safe queens so the case is pretty much useless for that purpose. I liked the packaging on the few Benchmades I bought. Nice and simple.
Now, for somebody that buys a ton of knives and has a shin to knee high pile of junk sitting on the floor after opening a weeks worth of packages I can see how it can be highly annoying lol.
There should be an option for simple packaging. It is nice the first couple of times. But for a collector, it's trash. I love the Vision FG from Civivi. Have 2.
First world problem
I like the pouches and the cleaning cloths
Yes, yes, yes! Totally agree with you. I hate how much packaging knives come with knives these day. I bought the Transparent colour range of 58mm SAK classic SD's and the packaging was huge compared to the little 58mm knife. Condor was the same when I bought the K-TACT Kukri, it came in this huge box with the Kukri rolling around in there with all the propaganda.
The pouch is nice for super expensive knifes or when the handle material is fragile.
Sometimes there's even a huge plastic box like the TB outdoor CAC, which is not even a good folding knife.
It's like knife makers know nothing about what knife enthusiasts like.
Civivi used to have awesome stickers, dragon and cool owl, etc. now it's just a neat yellow green background and a big C. Which may be appropriate for whomever made that call...
I am with you Cedric. We produce so much waste, I seriously dont know where we keep it all
I used to use my Civivi pouch as a case for small headphones. All other pouches are waiting for some sort of use. We all know it won't happen.
I like the cleaning cloths and pouches. I use the cloths for random polishing of stuff, and the pouches are repurposed for keeping various things safe.
Even the stickers get stuck on the laptop.
Agree 100%. There's no need for the stickers, the cleaning cloths, the instruction manuals, the bag, the box, the knife.
Just let me pay my $100 and receive nothing. It's better for the environment!
Ah yes, welcome to the over 35 club; uncle randy is in your future lol
I only own 3 knives. I'm happy 2 of them came in a nice pouch, also the cleaning cloths are useful for me.
Part of the 'buy' is the experience and nice packaging improves the perception. That being said I agree wholeheartedly with not wasting resources. The extra cost of those pouches could be spent on better hardware or just a slightly better clip or whatever part of the actual thing you are buying. On the other hand if you are buying it for someone as a gift you would want the presentation to be as nice as possible.
I am all for simplicity and lack of stuff. Agreed wholeheartedly.
I agree. Most of the extra stuff is just that.
Because every knife could be someone's first knife.
Personally, I couldn't agree more... though the civivi zipper case is great for glasses!
You're a mean one mister Grinch. Just kidding, I can't stand receiving anything other than what I ordered.
This is annoying only if person is a collector, then it starts to pile up. For new people in the hobby, the pouch and cloth will be usefull for storage and maintenance of their one or two knives. I agree on stickers and brochures.
Now that you mention it, I still have the boxes to knives I've lost or given away. So, really, I'm a box collector? 🤔
Spot the Spyderco man.
Fair play, although the (usually) oversized pouches that Kansept includes go to other knives, and my Fox Livri came with a nice, perfectly fitted leather slip. It's mostly branding they hope will linger and spread.
Agreed. You're on to something with misplaced expenditure on unnecessary stuff. Keep it up, great content.
I threw out so many knife boxes and packaging that I filled half a dumpster. Boxes that are 3 times the size of the knife.
I’m going to trash my built up “knife trash” Haha! It’s totally a waste of material and adds up very fast.🤘🤣
i wish they were optional for no additional cost, like u said i probably have like 5 different clothes + ones from glasses, I dont need em but someone might. Let me opt out of it!!
I agree with you.... waaaay too much "stuff" especially with the internet available.
I like the extras, good presentation and extra value for customer. UNLESS its really adding costs to the product, then i would bot prefer it
My last Civivi knife came with more junk than my CRK Sabenza. I kept Reeves box and stuff because its actually really nice stuff and I spent $500 on that knife. Spyderco does a decent job. Box, knife in a little bit of plastic, maybe a sticker and a little pamphlet. They know were gonna toss it. Those zipper bags my kids dont even want to play with. Knife tubes for slipjoints is another one. Its too nice for me to just bin it, but i dont want it either. I buy my knives to use, they get dropped in a drawer or my roll up knife pack that hangs on a wall. Just give me enough packaging to keep the knife safe in shipping, only paperwork for warranty and if theres something unique about the item. My last leatherman came with the Rebar, sheath, and a paper showing how to use some of the tools if you dont know that also doubled as warranty information.
I’ve gotten Russian money, their own brand chocolate , stickers , Velcro patches from CKF knives.
But yeah, from budget knives it doesn’t make sense. I have a box just for micro usb cables that came with 2 dollar electronic items.
I preferred the old days before he rebranded to CKF and turned it into a marketing machine...
@@dlrmon1 I feel that comes with time. Meaning the fanboys build up along time and then it’s to feed to their frenzy
I feel the same way, but that’s probably because I’m unwell and have 50 knives. For most folks this might be their only knife, or a gift. I get it in those cases.
Grumpy, grumpy. I actually like the cloths - they're always useful somewhere. I'm with you on the marketing bumf. I also throw it away.
I don't need stickers, no matter how expensive the knife. I don't put stickers on anything anyways.
I also don't need a paper cutout of the knife i just bought.
But i have nothing against the small microfiber cloth... find uses for them all the time.
And while i have nothing against the casing you thew away, it would be enough if the microfibre for example was a little sack the size of the knife with a piece of cord and a cordstopper instead of all the plastic packaging. (doesn't need to be microfibre, can just be cotton or wool or linnen...)
->Cardboard, inside a little cloth bag, and inside that the knife, that would be my ideal way. No matter the price.
I could do without the stickers but I like the pouch and polishing cloth. I have about a dozen of them now.
Best Basil scream to date.
First time I felt it fit absolutely perfectly.
Based on the title, I thought this was going to be about your new outro.
There's actually a browser extension that brings back the thumbs down.
That being said, I agree. I have yet to ever put a sticker on anything at all. All that stuff is just waste products.
I'll dispose of all those stickers, cloths, and pouches, free of charge!
Thank you!
for guys who can only afford a couple knives a year getting the additives and case is cool, you buy many knives so its probably annoying you, I personally enjoy it and I use cases from things for other things or I give to my son...
I like the cleaning cloths, can never have too many of them. I like the stickers too, granted I'm a sticker fiend
I actually like the bits and bobs. But instead of stickers, an extra set of screws wouldn't hurt, especially if they are t6. The problem with the stickers is that they are all elementum stickers. They could at least give you a sticker for that specific knife model.
The Vosteed crossbar locks come with an extra set of omega springs... and that is sort of nice. The rest... yeah.
And I like the extra hardware that kizer sends
Almost every fancy pocket knife gets shipped in a mini civivi bag. Things aren't all bad when they get used over and over
There is one answer to this. Stop buying stuff.
The polishing cloths are actually welcome. I use them to have a nice cleaning cloth for my glasses everywhere. Get them more from buying watch straps mostly these days, but they are the same. And why do I need a polishing cloth for a watch strap?
