Upgrading the SSD
WARNING!
This Tutorial is for educational purposes only.
Replacing SSD in
Ableton Push 3 Standalone might (or might not) void your warranty.
You risk damaging or bricking your Push.
I cannot be held responsible for any damage to your Push, your computer
or voiding your warranty.
You have been warned :)
WARNING2:
So looks like there's an issue with upgrading the SSD. Push is doing some sort of HW snapshot and submitting a hash of the current config when authorising Live. So with the changed HW config, authorisation will fail because Ableton "thinks" this is a different Push than the original one already unlocked. AFAIK there's no way to de-authorise the "old" Push and authorise the upgraded "new", so the only way would be to contact support, explaining the situation and ask for another unlock. Not sure how they'll handle it though.
Tools Needed:
Philips Head Screwdriver
2xNVME to USB adapter
Mac computer
Linux Computer
Steps:
1. Disassemble Push
2. Take out the SSD
3. Connect both Ableton and New SSD to Mac
4. Clone the Ableton SSD to New SSD
5. Connect new SSD to Linux computer
6. Use GParted to expand the partition
7. Install new SSD and Reassemble Push

Thanks for pushing the limits
Buen video, solo puntualizaría quitar la batería antes de iniciar el proceso, has tenido suerte de no hacer un corto en la placa.
Top tip. It does't hurt to add a bead of thermal paste to the thermal pad on the processor and thermal pad under the heat sink. The last thing you want is the cpu thermal throttling because its too hot.
Another tip. if you have trouble telling which 'data' partion is which, click properties and check free space.
thx a lot :)
this is great - I've tried to do this but the last command is confusing could you please list commands for Mac ? thanks again!
Sure:
diskutil list (lists all connected disks)
diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk6 (unmounts the ableton disk - replace /dev/disk6 with your number)
diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk5 (umnounts the target disk - replace disk number with your number)
sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk6 of=/dev/rdisk5 bs=1m status=progress
(clones disk 6 to disk 5 - change numbers according to your disk list)
note the "R" in the disk name - this switches DD to raw mode - much faster
@@xrcstrecords thank you ! X
is it possible to get the non-standalone push, put an ssd in there, plug it to the computer and get access to the ssd installed in the push? like
, using the push as an ssd enclosure?
Afaik no. The ssd is tied to the cpu, which controller doesn’t have
have you tried to use the new ssd without resizing? It does automatically resize on the first startup AFAIK.
Tried that and it didn’t resize automatically, hence the gparted resize on Linux
is it possible to upgrade t oamd ryzen 4 soc nuc ? this intel thing is hot slowmotion compared to amd cpu
Afaik not. Looks like there’s custom bios on the included nuc elements, so we’ll have to rely on Ableton to release an upgrade. Or someone with mad hacking skills. But I agree the i3 is tragic.
I have the Akai Force and the 2 units get compared a lot...
How do you like the Push?... are you coming from an Abelton background?
Yep, had ableton for years. Had Force too for a while, it’s great but the Push integration with Ableton on a computer is another level.
So looks like there's an issue with upgrading the SSD. Push is doing some sort of HW snapshot and submitting a hash of the current config when authorizing Live. So with the changed HW config, authorisation will fail because Ableton "thinks" this is a different Push than the original one already unlocked. AFAIK there's no way do de-authorise the "old" Push and authorise the upgraded "new", so the only way would be to contact support, explaining the situation and ask for another unlock. Not sure how they'll handle it though, so for now I switched back to the original SSD
Have you managed to get it solved? Most likely its best to do this before activating the Push for the first time?
@@BoukeGroenescheij I got another unlock from ableton support after asking nicely, but haven’t got around to swapping the ssd again and reactivate, working on my live gig atm, so no time.
So I finally got time to swap the ssd for the new 1TB one. Authorized just fine with the another unlock I got from ableton support (it shows as different Push on my ableton account), so I can confirm the authorization works fine with the new ssd. All good.
just to verify as I have my Standalone on the way. You could clone the drive, add a 1 or 2 TB NVME and authorize the first time under the new drive without an issue? or does the snapshot come from the factory?@@xrcstrecords
hypothetically, this wouldn't be an issue if one were to buy the upgrade kit and run through this process first before ever putting the Ableton ssd into the push 3, right?
When I go into gparted, it doesn’t recognize the data partition and does not allow me to resize it. Any ideas?
I had issues with large ssds (2 and 4TB), but no idea why. Ended up using 1TB, it worked fine
sounds like a problem with the initial cloning. I'd try again. also make sure you don't have a window to that drive open. Try unmounting the partition. On the larger drives, eg over 1tb, you have to delete the 'data' partition, and then recreate it using all the space. You'll also need to make sure its labled 'data' and is of course ext4.
[this applies to Ubunto ] After this to write [eg copy the Music folder from the original] to the drive you have to claim 'ownership'. To do this select the root folder in the new data partition, right-click to get properties, then select 'open disk', then select your drive, and highlight the partition we've just created. You will see an icon below that looks like the windows settings icon. click select the option to 'take ownership'. Now you can write to that drive. eg copy the Music folder over.
Edit::
I discovered whilst trying to authorize the push that the data partition was locked in read-only, basically not allowing key configuration files to be written.
The file "/data/.local/share/Ableton/Installation.cfg" cannot be opened for writing because it is write-protected.
The solution was to go back to Linux, open the terminal and enter 'sudo chmod -R 777 /media/< user name >/data' .
The last part of this command is the location of the 'data' partition which may be different for you, with your ssd plugged into your linux / mac box. Then i popped the ssd back in did a factory reset. Finally did the Authorization again.
btw if wifi doesn't work its also because the files for wifi weren't being saved to the data partition. All this worked fine with the above fix.
@@chrisliddiard725 Hi. I'm trying this right now.
Why not just resize the data partition?
When you say; ".....delete the 'data' partition, and then recreate it using all the space." doesn't that delete all the data on that partition?
Are you saying to just copy all the files from the data partition on the original disk to the same partition on the new cloned one?
@@Nick-kb6jd Do not make any changes to the original drive. This is to be done on the newly cloned ssd only!
Only delete the 'data' partition if you are unsucessful in resizing that partition on the cloned drive. Try simply resizing first, as i've read you may be sucessful just doing that.
@@chrisliddiard725 Yeah, I'm not altering anything on the original disk. I did try resizing the data partition on the new ssd and it returned errors on gparted. If I delete the data partition on the new disk i lose all the files on it? What am I not understanding?
You can’t do this with Windows?
There are cloning and partitioning utilities on Windows, so it should work, but I didn’t test that
I thought it was made to be upgraded, why would it void the warranty if so?
The controller was made to be user upgraded. No word on upgrading the standalone with 3rd party components, so…
@@xrcstrecords The difference between the SSD you get from Ableton and the one you replace it with is mostly the sticker on it.
I doubt Ableton ordered custom SSDs from a manufacturer. They're probably just buying exactly the same SSD you could just buy directly yourself and put their own sticker on it. Everything else would be economic nonsense. The processor board is also just an off-the-shelf Intel NUC Compute Elements Perhaps. Perhaps they would try to tell us that this will void the warranty, but I doubt it will hold up in court. Just like those "warranty void if seal broken" stickers on top of screws are not legally effective.
@@juschu85 you’re right, the original is Adata Ssd, nothing special about it except for the sticker and the data/os on it
Damn this boots into Ableton as slow as my windows 10 i7 nuc from 2017 😢
