Awesome sled. I remember when they came out. Grew up in Minnesota on the lakes. They definitely are a sharp snowmobile. My Uncle & my brother had 340's. Eventually I got my brothers. I've had many sleds over the years, this is one of my favorites .
Dad traded his 1971 Olympic 339 in the fall of '73 for a new leftover Elan SS 250 twin..73-74 was lousy(New England) snofall,warm...those twin carbs(tilliotson?)..would bog down...Dad had it converted to the single carb(mikuni?).that helped....when Dad upgraded fall'75 for a new TNT 340...the Elan was my new ride..fun nimble machine a true classic..miss those days of yesteryear..🤟
I remember racing my buddies 72 Cheetah, 440 vs 440.....you just brought back good memories of old school field racing. Thanks! (Oh, I beat him every time )
I was born in ‘79 and my father had, in 1972, bought a new TNT 440. I always hated it! Loud, rough riding, hard-starting, plug-fouling snowmobile. Needless to say it and me never got along too well. I suppose you guys didn’t know any better or have any better than these in their day. Snowmobiles have come a long way!
Your points are well made and properly received. Those smoking smelly fouling engines were state of the art in 1972. Premixing fuel-oil was a skill and most sledders had way too much oil that fouled the plugs, which we carried many of back then. By the time you yourself started riding, that was an old sled with old technology and the sled itself was probably getting tired in every aspect. My 72 TnT ran great up until the mid 80s when every mechanical/moving part was suddenly just tired. You are correct, snowmobiles have come along way since then. Cheers.

,That colour-stripe combo was unique to that year of TNT. Owners are proud that look.
My first sled, in '76, was an Elan. I have 4 of them now.

Fella in Thunder Bay has 1 with chrome skis.!!! He used to race it as well..
That too was my first sled. I worked for a skidoo dealer then. We raced that sled on the grass with great success for two years. Loved that sled.
Grass drags were huge back then and manufacturers built grass drag race sleds. Ski-Doo had the Blizzard GR series built for that.
72 292 was my first sled bought it used in April of 73 for 400 USD
Great job Phil. Enjoying these memories from the past.
More to come!
My 1st riding experience were in 1972 on a TNT but it was silver,, possibly a 71.

I rescued a 72 440 hood from my dump. It's a little beat up but not bad.

Team Vincent, you stated the tilitson carb had no fuel pump. ? It's nothing but a fuel pump!
I think it was skidoo's corvette sled
It was their "go fast" sled for the consumer market
