This is not only my favourite special but one of my fave episodes. I love it. It wraps up S8 perfectly and shows that the Clara doctor dynamic is at a turning point - the last moments are perfect. No more lies. Just 100% trust.
“There was one other man, but that would never have worked out.”
“Why not?”
“He was impossible.”
*intense crying*
"I died saving Clara. The rest of you just got lucky."
I think the 'forgive Dave' note is there just to make thepoint that subconcoiusly she sort of remembers some of what went on, and it fits with the overall theme of second chances.
"Doctor, am I young?"
"No idea."
That made me chuckle and sad at same time. He see nothing different when Clara getting old, he still see her as usual.
Or Dave is an ex-boyfriend who did something wrong, and what with Christmas being a time of forgiveness, maybe she felt it was time to do so.
I remember watching this and knowing the excitement I felt was just the beginning of something very special thus began my favourite era of DW and my unparalleled contentment with the Twelfth Doctor and Clara.
This is one of my favourite christmas specials, just because of how Christmas was utilized within the framework of the story. It wasn't just 'Alien Invasion, but it's Christmas' the Christmas aspects were tied in very well to the script as a whole.
Any chance to watch 12 argue and banter with another semi-legendary figure is worth it. Santa, Robin Hood, you name it.
You can just imagine the universe going “Why did I let these two meet? The arguing…”
Good reaction, this is the most Christmassy Christmas special ever, & for me there was no cringe in it at all

For some reason I only just made the connection that the guy who plays Santa (Nick Frost) is the same actor in the cornetto trilogy with Simon Pegg

a really beautiful message and a lovely christmas special. the twelfth doctor’s characterisation here is perfect and it serves as a brilliant epilogue to S8. the doctor so excited while flying the sleigh is adorable, i love seeing him mellow out!
plus, that ending is just perfect. the music, the acting, it’s beautifully done.
question: will you be watching the prologue to S9, the one set on karn? probably not long enough for a reaction, but it’s way too good for megan to miss out!
The snarkiest Elf is played by Dan Starkey, actor who plays Strax. Also the oldest 'researcher's is Michael Troughton, the oldest son of Patrick, Doctor #2.
Oh my god and we’re only through the first third of the Capaldi era! So a stunning couple of seasons. This is a particularly good run (Last Christmas -> Before the Flood).

The tangerine is there at the end because Santa is real!
Thing is this was supposed to be her exit from the show but she decided to stay on last minute, though that would have been a beautiful poetic ending if they left her story their as an old woman.
I agree it would have been a great ending, but would have absolutely hated it as well

I really enjoy this episode. It goes in a different direction to the other Christmas specials. They went for a scary story with a twist of Christmas. Usually the Xmas special is a light episode that either wouldn't make it into a series or considered filler. This one actually could be an episode in the series if you tweaked the story a bit. The Santa was a great touch, something we all believe in at one point and then we learn the truth. The episode needed something you could doubt but also could be real after all. Nothing says that more then Santa. Also a big warning that your still dreaming and its all fake. When Santa tells then things they wanted as a kid it does make you thing he could be real. But then you realise that Santa is in their heads. I might be over thinking this but it does have a great story and some depth to it.
I knew this was going to be an emotional rollercoaster.

I struggled with series 8 with the rocky/uncomfortable relationships between the three main characters, but for me this Christmas special was the perfect reboot- saying goodbye to Danny, clearing away the (white) lies at the end of the series finale, and the Doctor and Clara excitedly enjoying being together again. The perfect set up for Series 9, for me absolutely the best series since Series 4.
I wouldn't say this is generally considered highly by 'Doctor Who' fans.
Most of the opinions I've seen range from dislike to "meh".
I love it, and think it's easily one of the best Twelfth Doctor stories; definitely one of the few that handles Clara very well as a character. I'm aware I'm in the minority with that opinion though.

I’m pretty certain another moment where it’s hinted they were intending to make Shona the next companion is when she calls him ‘the magician’ halfway through the episode, linking in with the first episode of S9, ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’. Because think about it, it’s a completely random title given what happens in the episode. It’s a shame because I wish that’s the direction they went down.
Also, i’m sure you’re already aware Elliot but the Kill the Moon reaction is blocked - any chance of a re-upload?
Such an incredible episode.
And while I liked it a lot at the time, I think it’s aged REALLY well.
How could they not use "Last Christmas" by Wham in this episode? It would've fitted better than "Merry Christmas Everybody" by Slade.
Not really a dance tune though.
I know a lot of the Christmas specials are tearjerkers, but sometimes I feel like it's just too depressing, otherwise I quite like this special and it closes off Series 8 very well as an epilogue. Very much looking forward to Series 9 reactions, it's always fun to revisit the series through a reactors eyes, especially the stretch of episodes from Face the Raven to Husbands.
Moffat explained in this video ruclips.net/video/styqnGNTffM/видео.html at 10mins 36 secs (part of his farewell interview with Cristel) that he was sketching out an idea of Shona being the next companion after Jenna decided to leave but Moffat changed her mind late on before filming Last Christmas but not before the read-through.

Ok this episode is quite good. I still think it's my least favourite of the Capaldi era because I just love the others more but this episode is actually really enjoyable and scary too.
Not much to say about it tbh it's good but I just prefer others over it.

Sickest nastiest DW episode ever. And the way nobody wants to say so because they won't sound cool is an exploitative situation itself.
Its not my favourite but it was trying to execute a pretty good idea, they might not have exceeded in the way they wanted but at least they tried.
I’m sorry, i might just be stubborn but a christmas carol is the best in my opinion.
In terms of Capaldi specials it's my least favourite and is one that I dont rewatch that much unlike the other 3.
I think it;s the best of the Capaldi specials although I love them all, Christmas Carol rocks too tho
@@Mineycart I find 'Husbands of River Song' to be a really unpleasant attempt at black comedy under Doctor Who's restrictions, and it comes off as nasty, unpleasant scene after scene after scene that's a pain to sit through. Wasn't a fan of this, but it was by no means nearly as bad as that.

my least favourite Christmas special of the capaldi era. Not sure why but it just bores me. Anyway, great reaction as usual and can't wait for you to start series 9 :))
Personally I think it would have been a stronger exit for Clara if it had left her old here. Perhaps a bit similar to the Ponds living to death but we didn't get to see them as old people. For me she stayed on too long.
would have been a bit pointless to cut her arc before it finished just for the sad points. she needed to stay. we wouldnt have got the best episode ever if she left it would have been nowhere near as effective...

I respectively disagree but hey ho. It's definitely "The Doctor, the witch and the wardrobe" for me. I only love Marge directing 11 back to his TARDIS then I just lose interest quickly
no way. christmas invasion, runaway bride, voyage, next doctor, end of time 1, doctor widow wardrobe are definitely worse. the only one that is definitely better is christmas carol .
