    I've had my kit for about 15 years, pondering the various problems. I've finally decided to have an outer ring CNC machined out of aluminum. I'll duct tape the upper panels together, glue them, ay them on my table saw and inject Great Stuff and let them cure. Afterward, I'll have as much meat as I can possibly need, o bring everything down flat. I'll decide later if I wish to either paint the model or skin it with Baremetal foil. I'll build the interior as a separate model.

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  2 года назад +3

      A solid outer ring would be the best for sure and being light like aluminum will not add too much weight to cause other drooping. It'll be expensive to have made, I checked on that. I'm trying to show a simpler affordable method for most that will be effective and get a good result.

    Excellent plan. I have an old closeup of the side of the studio model and you can see waves in the outer circumference of the saucer as well. It appears the edge was exposing the original material, either wood or fiberglass, not sure. The studio model does appears to have 6 landing gear. Your approach to the dilemma of mating the top half panels while leaving a gap to reduce additional problems is best . You tackle this problem like an engineer or experienced auto body/paint specialist. Look forward to viewing your progress.

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  2 года назад +1

      The absolute best remedy for the saucer would be to have a 3/16" thick steel or aluminum support ring made which would ensure the saucer edges would be laser straight and never move. I Looked into having one made and it was quite expensive. Trying to show a different approach here that does the job with supplies that most can easily get.

    I am defiantly going to follow this build, you are very clever Boyd, specially with these kits that have defections, and this kit is huge, I thought the Enterprise refit kit was big, but this saucer dwarfs that Enterprise kit, but with that said I do like big kits, I have always love the movie, I really am surprised that they added extra landing legs, I wish they would make a lost in Space Jupitar kit this large, I have find it easier to do the detail work, but as usual Boyd doing great work,

  • @akc5150
    @akc5150 2 года назад +1

    Only reason I can think for the 6 landing legs is so they would only have to model one lower "section" and just repeat that one six times. All down to the cost of producing a separate mould for the non-leg sections I guess.

  • @Joepacker
    @Joepacker 2 года назад +2

    I would guess the reason you have 6 landing gear areas is they only made one injection die for the bottom and not two, saves them money in the die process, especially since this is so big.

    Looking good Boyd, I think it's the look of the draw if you get a good or bad fitting saucer due to the size of the plastic panels and the rate the plastic cooled when ejected from the tooling machine.
    But it's definitely in need of lots of body work filling and sanding to get looking good.

    The "extra" landing gear bays are probably due to using a single mold for all six segments of the lower hull. Why they'd include six sets of actual landing gear makes no sense unless the parts list was written by someone who saw the setup for the lower hull but never saw the film.

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  2 года назад

      Yes, the lower saucer panels are all off of the same mold to save money it seems.

    Hello, I am a new subscriber, I just found your channel yesterday when I saw your first video for the C57D Ship. I don't have this kit but I have a ton of model aircraft that I have to build about 200 kits maybe more. So what I hope to learn from you will make my kits come out even better than they could have. I do have some questions. I tried contacting the model rail road hobby group in my city. I spoke to a few people but no one was interested in talking to me about lighting and motorizing my kits. I figured that since they build working train platforms. They would know all you could dream of knowing on lighting and building engines to pull the cars around the track. They do know a lot but apparently where not interested in sharing that info. I even offered to pay someone for their time. I have looked for info on RUclips and the internet in general. I find a lot of tutorials on electronics but nothing when it comes to putting it all together or making simple circuits to run nav, rotating beacons and engine motors to spin the props. Could you please help me figure out how to do this stuff? Point me towards a good source or someone who likes sharing info or hiring out to teach? I have kits in 1:48 and 1:32. The Kits are mostly WWII and Korean (I was born, raised and a former USAF so I tend to stick with the birds I grew up with) the kits are single engine P-51 to a massive 6 engine B-36. I have two of the 1:72 scale XB-70's one is to be wheels down and if I can figure out how to make the three drag parachutes fully deployed and the other is inflight with a F-100 chase bird off its wing. This means changing the nose and a section of windows on one side. I sure would appreciate any help or points in the right direction. Thank you. Robert

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  2 года назад

      The problem is much of what is needed to motorize a particular model will have to be designed to work with that specific model, how much space to fit a motor, speed, and how to make a molded plastic part like a prop for example spin and be balanced with no wobbling. Most builders just work out the problems along the way on a custom project like that. I have seen some good YT videos that show motorized model airplanes and how they did it. There are companies that offer electronic control boards that mimic navigation lights, strobes, blinking etc. I recommend you find an online modeling community to join and you'll find a ton of stuff there with a lot of people willing to help.

      I have looked for videos and other searches on the internet with poor results. Are you familiar with any forums? I have lots of parts and lights both pee lamp and LED. I just need to learn enough about what parts do what and how to create a circuit to put it all together. Thank you again.

    There's a book about movie ufo's that says that Round 2 turned the saucer upside down for some reason. So, the angles don't match the ones in the movie. I believe the book was by someone named Hagerty.

  • @theherrdark4834
    @theherrdark4834 2 года назад

    The reason there is 6 landing gear is due to tooling cost, instead of 3 sets of molds for the outer shell, going this route they only needed to make 2 and save a very significant amount of money. This kit obviously was developed by someone who understands model builders.

      Actually you can use just about any of the automotive grade base paints that are sold at body shop supply stores. They will all be good quality with the attributes you mentioned. You'll want to go with the urethane based paint and the recommended reducer. The reducer depends on the ambient temp you will be spraying at.
