I really need to give this game a go sometime. Just finished replaying Grim Fandango on Xbox, which oddly enough gives you an achievement if you manage to get through it with the Tank Controls… Really enjoyed the video as usual 👌
I never knew the first AITD had a secondary main character. I always thought it was just Edward Cromby. I wish I knew more about Lovecraft's stories. I never read any of them so when I see examinations of them, most of it goes over my head. Alan Moore's _Providence_ was baffling to me for not knowing these stories.
Yep from AitD 2 onwards, it's all about Ed! Poor Emily gets relegated to an occasional bit-part from then on. I would highly recommend reading some Lovecraft. It's easy to read, and the good kind of weird 😎
You hear its name in passing every now and then, but it feels almost like an afterthought. I'd love to talk about the whole series, so let's hope this one does well!
I'm so glad people are finding this series. I saw it on a fluke on GOG one time and gradually educated myself on what it was, then played the whole series early last year before reviewing it. Never quite the greatest thing you'll ever play, but every entry had something interesting about it and worth experiencing.
I want to play Alone in the Dark now… The idea of a finding a sword and thinking you’re safe only to have it break on the first swing is awesome. Absolute troll behaviour on the part of the developers, but in the best way. Really excited to see what the remake/reboot is like too. Great video!
The game does this sort of thing to you _a lot_. It's very cheeky, and causes you to never truly trust it. Thank you! Glad you stuck around and I'm glad you enjoyed the video ☺️
The interactivity and inventory management here is better than in many of the later survival horror games, including the Alone sequels. I don't think the combat is that bad tbh, I found it quite fun to dispose of useless items by throwing them at enemies and if you go for melee, it is only a matter of timing. I really hope the remake will let the player be creative in certain ways like this one.
For the time you have to put into them, it would be worth filling in that blank spot imo. The two DOS sequels are lighter in tone, kind of wacky. And I have a real soft spot for The New Nightmare.
Horror is the one genre in video games that I feel I have the least experience with. I've only ever tried a few games for a brief period. That feeling of tension you describe is one that I'm rarely able to enjoy. I do hope to remedy that someday though. A lot of the games look like so much fun to play.
Honestly, I get it. Modern horror games can really spook me out. I tried to play PT on my PS4 and I thought I was going to have a panic attack. I feel like going back and playing the older games helps to put a bit of distance between me and the game. The atmosphere and the vibes come across, but I don't quite end up as a jibbering wreck
The second I finished the episode I clicked back to the begining. That opening will go down as the best intro of all time! It hooks my intrest and gets me to groove... I'm more than invested!
Matty you definitely deserve your video essays credentials, this was awesome! Sadly I never got to play this one on its day, Silent Hill on the PS1 was my first horror game and it haunted me forever.
With the popularity of Resident Evil these days, I always hoped we'd get a HD remaster of these games for modern consoles/PC. Would be cool to revisit these with some optional gameplay accessibility features and control tweaks.
I love the idea. I think a ground up remake like the GameCube Resi game would be great. The game runs in something like 300x200. It would be ace to see those hand drawn backgrounds drawn up at a higher res
Oh yes, this game legitimately scared me back then. Funny how it looks kinda silly today. I also especially love its music, even though it seems to only have a couple of tracks. But what is there is pretty awesome.
I would play this like I played all my old DOS games. I'd load it up, have no idea what I was doing, get killed, turn it off. Then try again the next day 😅

I saw that achievement on the Steam version after playing it through with the mouse. Definitely about time I fired that one up again!
Also welcome back! 💓

Yes!! I’m so happy to hear you talk about Alone in the Dark. It doesn’t get enough credit for setting the standards for survival horror games.

AITD blew my mind when I played it in '92. We just kind of stumbled on it but were Lovecraft fans and were playing the CoC rpg.
Taking the Lovecraft template was a master stroke! There's a lot more cosmic horror games now, but this was something special back in the 90s

I hope people are finding it. I've been banging on about it forever Thanks for commenting mate
Brill editing and great commentary as always!
Thank you mate. I think the last two videos have been my best editing work. Glad you enjoyed it

I couldn't find time to mention that Resident Evil 0 took its idea of leaving items anywhere from AitD. And throwing stuff at monsters is brilliant! 😎
Really something special about these early 3D games. Something extra creepy about fewer polygons
I do agree. Something about the lower poly count gives your imagination the opportunity to take over. At least that's what I think.
Fantastic work! It's always a treat to watch you dive into what makes a game special and survival horror will always really spark my fascination.
Thank you so much, Matt. "Some old thing that nobody talks about" feels like my specialty. I'm glad to be filling this niche!
The demo for this game used to terrify me as a kid. Good memories.
I'm genuinely loving a lot of comments I've been getting lately about people playing demos. That's suck a cosy, nostalgic feeling 🥰
For a survival horror nerd. I've never played the original AITD's. Perhaps I should. Great video mate!

Wonderfully made video and extremely excited for the remake that's coming out this year, subbed.
Thank you very much for the kind words and the sub! More horror vibes on the way.
What's your favourite survival horror game? I bet it's inspired in some small way by Alone in the Dark!
The second I finished the episode I clicked back to the begining. That opening will go down as the best intro of all time! It hooks my intrest and gets me to groove... I'm more than invested!
Such a lovely comment. Getting compliments on specific parts of the video really fires up my dopamine. Thank you 💓
You keep finding incredible topics to talk about. Love it, man.
Thank you, bud. Your comments are always extremely kind and I appreciate you. The next video is going to be a fun topic of discussion!

That is exceptionally kind of you. Thank you so much! Silent Hill is such a vibe, man. Love that game!
Great work! My nostalgia made the algorithm find you. You deserve a much bigger audience. Off to play AITD on my new handheld. Thx!
Thank you for leaving a lovely comment. And thanks to Daddy Algo for sending you my way :D
Fantastic video, always love people speaking of the Alone series.
Thank you, I'm glad to hear it! More spooky old games on the way, too 🧛
Remember playing this on my PC as a kid. Confess it wasn't my favorite game. Tank controls.
Hey that's fine! We've all got our likes and dislikes. That's what makes meeting new people so much fun ☺️

This and another DOS game called Ecstatica absolutely terrified me back then. It gave me nightmares!
Showing your age saying Condemned is a modern game there Matt. It was released nearly 18 years ago!!! 😀
Hahaha I do realise calling games from the 2000s modern. I'm not ready for the Xbox 360 to be retro
On the subject of the game's length:
The first time I played it it took me several hours.
The second time, 40 minutes lol
I would play this like I played all my old DOS games. I'd load it up, have no idea what I was doing, get killed, turn it off. Then try again the next day 😅
Alone in the Dark is indeed important, but it is not the FIRST game of the genre. That belongs to Haunted House in the Atari 2600.
I don't think at any point did I try and claim Alone in the Dark was the first anything.
