  • Ted Koppel appeared to hand Sean Hannity his lunch, but does he have room to talk? Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. tytnetwork.com/go
"Sean Hannity on Monday attempted to defend himself against famed journalist Ted Koppel, who on Sunday told the Fox News reporter-to his face-that he thinks he’s bad for America.
Discussing the interview on his radio show “The Sean Hannity Show,” Hannity insisted he “liked watching Ted” when Koppel was the host of ABC’s “Nightline,” before launching into an attack on the respected reporter...
“I’m an opinionated journalist and a talk show host,” Hannity began. “But the difference, Ted respectfully, is I’m honest with my audience, you’re not. You pretend to be fair and balanced, I don’t. And if you really cared about truth in journalism how do you work for a network that’s so abusively biased with the history it has?””*

Koppel's point was correct in stating MOST American's aren't smart enough to view opinion news as fact based news, and that's why Fox News has lead us to be in the mess we're at. Cenk, I think you're wrong on this one. Not a fact, just my opinion.

John Doe youre partially right but this is important: for decades now, and mostly, but not solely from the right politicians have put propaganda out as facts. The strategy is if you say it loud enough and often enough people will believe you. Now, finally, with Trump and his minions they've gotten brazen enough to label any facts they don't like as "alternative facts" or "fake news".
Meanwhile, Trump had been castrating government agencies' ability to collect and disseminate actual facts. The ramifications will be severe. As time goes by there will br fewer and fewer real facts available to the people to help themselves decide what is true.
When people such as Hannity continually scream propaganda as fact they MUST continually be challenged and available facts are the only wsy to do it.

  • @sandycovey7440

It's not either/or news/opinion. I'm a 69 yr old progressive. I grew up with old-school newsmen like Cronkite, David Brinkley and Chet Huntley, Ted Koppel, and others who were like trusted family members. They gave the news without exaggeration, sensationalism or opinion. Then an editorial opinion might be offered at the last few minutes. It was clear when we were given facts and when we were given opinion. In the '60's it all began to change as news was too often used for military propaganda and we began to see the Emperor was naked. It became an era of liberalism that was a part of every show from the news to All In The Family and The Smothers Brothers. We are in a swing of conservatism that is using the same techniques fine-tuned by the likes of Norman Lear (who did it so well!) so we have late night comedians for urbanites and conservative radio talk for the working stiffs, The View and Oprah for housewives, Fox News and MSNBC, depending on your leanings. Lots of You Tube pundits like yourselves. But it's not easy to find an unbiased presentation or at least one that presents both/alternate views in a respectful manner. PBS/NPR are the last possibilities for that but even they are increasingly succumbing to presenting only one view.
People like myself still try to search out sources who will explain all views and options with the least amount of bias possible. Very difficult to find but I sure do long for it. Can't even put together town halls led by the League of Women Voters anymore in my area. Too contentious.

I feel you completely on trying to get sources from all sides cause it is so hard to find an unbiased report of anything. Even in the week, the magazine, all the articles have some bias. I like the week though cause I've noticed that even though it has biased articles, they're written by people of different view points. Plus the Internet is such a great thing cause you can find articles all over the world and get different perspective and realize what is fact and what isn't. Sucks we have to go on an hunt to separate the most truthful of articles from the rest though.

Hannity is an actor doing it for the money, with a bucket of talking points and cliché's as comebacks, putting the whole interview on the web is OK. For Iraq the argument is lame, to say Bush and the CIA were lying with zero proof and no resources to counter their narrative is fake news. Fake news can be correct in the end, but your opinion of Bush and war in general causing you to hunt for any story on the internet calling Bush a liar then running with it is not news. Hannity gives his opinion and most of the people who watch that now believe it as fact. studies shown that fox viewers are the least informed of anybody. Shepard Smith and Chris Wallace are getting a lot of hate from Fox viewers for reporting the truth about trump. they call out his lies and fox viewers get mad for knowing the truth. You're confusing investigative journalism, which is nearly extinct, with opinion. Ted came from the era of investigative journalism, where conclusions are drawn in the last few paragraphs before the -30-. Opinions about those conclusions should be served separately. Go ahead and have your opinion show - I love your show - just don't call it 'the news'. In fact, guys like Ted should be rapidly bred in captivity and released back into the wild so that you have something meatier than a tweet upon which to actually base your opinion. Just sayin'

This is the problem with Fox News. I do not mind that they give a right wing opinion on an issue. The problem is that they just make up their own facts to give weight to their opinions. I believe that is what Ted was trying to get at in this piece. I know when I watch the Young Turks that they are going to have a left wing bias but I also know they are going to present the facts that are backed up with evidence.

At least TYT acknowledges "Hey, we could be wrong, let's look at all sides". That seems to me to be more intellectually honest. I don't always agree with TYT either, hell they're not even my first choice, the only one I watch everyday is The Majority Report by Sam Seder.

It's hard to have a take on this without seeing the whole interview, if Koppel really WAS saying opinion and interpretation has no part in news, that's one thing, but based off the snippet in the interview here there's nothing wrong with his comments. Both interviews here appear to be specifically about right wing media, which has a tendency to mislead, be presented by blowhards, and to place opinion and style over the presentation of facts and substance. Hence you get a portion of the public acting under the guise that they have certain set of beliefs based upon "facts" they have garnered via listening to opinion shows, such as Hannity and Limbaugh, feeling that these shows are factual in basis since they are supposed to be "reporters." That's the harm, and Koppel is absolutely right to say so. There's a stark difference between presenting facts and interpreting vs simply babbling about ideology. I mean, you see it here...Hannity states that "socialism has to be defeated" and then talks about the democratic establishment, and there is simply no basis in reality that the establishment in any way resembles or is in favor of socialism. THAT'S the problem, and what I took out of the footage shown here, that people like Hannity present interpretations which are demonstrably false - that's what Koppel seemed to have an issue with.

Important topic, but the challenge I'm notoriously finding, is finding the facts amongst so many reportors and analyst opinions. Too often the opinion or perspective is given with the facts in it, opposed to the facts being given first. Allowing for consumers to make up our minds first and then consider alternative perspectives that may change our mind. It's hard to have your own perspective when you're given the facts in scattered bits and pieces inside someone else's opinion. Analyst often jump right in and its difficult to understand what happened. Which results in people's perspective leaning towards the entity or individual that's giving the perspective. It allows people to be programed and indoctrinated without realizing it. Which is why so many are easily manipulated and why Trump saying fake news works. Because it allows him and his party to control the perception of the information by feeding the facts through their own spin. Don't listen to anyone else it's fake news, just listen to us or the those I approve of which is a load of horseshit

No, no ... reporters SHOULD report pure FACTS in a NEUTRAL way and allow the people make an INFORMED decision on their own. Cenk is wrong here. He’s confusing opinions with facts, which is a little self-serving in this context since he’s a purveyor of opinion. Good reporting goes beyond who said what, and drills down into the facts behind the rhetoric, then reports those facts and holds both sides to them. That process is not ‘opinion,’ or ‘perspective,’ it’s just good reporting.

Koppel merely said that FOX's Opinion Reporting misleads their followers by suggesting that their opinions are represented to their audience as the truth! There is a huge difference, and NO mainstream media does (for the most part) either seek to present the truth, or they are similarly as guilty of opinion when they fail to show the whole story simply because they deal in sound bites. Wrong. Ted isn’t saying don’t have an opinion, or that you should present the facts only. He’s saying news reporting based on “ideology only, at the expense of facts or truth is bad for America”, and the Hanitty show is a great example of perpetuating division in America. Bad because half of America, without any opposing point of view, let alone a fact check, now believe something which is factually incorrect. Fox News are morally reprehensible for the support of a political ideology that promote falsehoods to gain support. No Sean you can’t give the American people credit to know the difference between a news show and an opinion show. They think opinion shows on Fox are to be taken verbatim. Opinion shows should therefore have viewer warning disclosures. “Warning: commentary from our hosts contain language and opinion which are factually incorrect. Please use discretion when forming your own opinions”. Or just say “this show is produced for entertainment and ratings purposes and has no relation to the facts”.

By the airing time of this interview Ted, Huntley, George and at least a dozen other "nonobjective journalists" tried forming logic into liberal bias in at least two previous generations...but Sean started it? And Chris matthews had nothing to do with sensationalism? If memory serves the alphabet soups were here "YEARS" before Sean and Bill. By the time cable came onto the scene it was still several years afterward before it was broadband enough to stretch nationwide, then fox came after that. So the alphabet soup networks were already well establishes and not a one was conservative...none.
    Sean was exactly right.
Conservative muster on the vote is still near 3-to-1 over progressivism/socialism. That being said, conservatism did not even take root as a force of nature until 1964-65. Before that the "L" word was all democrat sponsored and there was not a single conservative to be found. No where. Conservatism then is said to have a small voice, tiny compared to the networks and small to even a Ted Koppel who has been around since television inception. All we wanted was a voice that voices us. Not huntley brinkley or even a walter cronkite.
I will take a Sean Hannity or a Bill O'Reilly over the past 3 generations of your "objective journalism" any day of the week and twice on sunday. Ted was right when he said Bill is an entertainer. Bill was right when he said he is not in the position of a reporter or an anchor. His talking points are brilliant (Bill). If the sensationalism that Ted tried to slam on a Sean or a Bill, especially for supporting this President, is objective journalism by Ted then Ted and his generation set that stage by suave smooth tongued interviews and reporting critiques on bone heads like carter and mondale.
I agree that Sean will never be a Ted.
    Thank God!
That is not adding anything to Sean or taking anything away from Ted.
Ted is not the conservative voice and neither is matthews. We are the smallest voice of all and the newest. We are the biggest and broadest in the nation.
Ted will never be a Sean.
    Thank God!

I disagree with Cenk about mainstream reporting on WMDs in Iraq. As I recall, there was a lot of news coming out that NATO inspectors could not find evidence of WMDs. People DID know that there were no WMDs in Iraq; that's why so many of us were against this war. Anyway, I would rather be presented with the facts so that I can form my own opinion rather than have someone spoon feed me theirs. We have far too many free floating opinions masquerading as news which I think is problematic. I'm ok with well informed opinions which are based upon careful analysis of the facts, but opinions backed by nothing but bias or wishful thinking is another matter.

Note that Ted Koppel's opinion was expressed in order to answer a question that was asked of him by Sean Hannity. So I would strike the hypocrite point from Hannity.

Sean Hannity has the audacity to attack Ted Koppel, a real journalist.

The real problem here, in contrast to Cenk's opinion is that Fox casts what they do as NEWS and Ted is a REAL journalist.

What he was saying is that Hannity doesn't bill that show as purely opinion. It allows people to "assume" its pure unadulterated fact, which it is not.

You are wrong on this one Cenk... Ted never said he wanted to cancel opinion. And Hannity should not be allowed to give his Propaganda reporting on a mainstream: so called news station! That is as wreak less and irresponsible as it gets!! Hannity and his ilk can have their opinion journalism on RUclips, or a podcast, but not on a network of any kind... unless it is Comedy Central or something similar.

He was talking about Sean Hannity, not you. Ted is talking about the manipulation not reporting.

Teddy Kopple was asked his opinion and gave it because he was the interviewee and that was what he was asked by Hannity. Nothing hypocritical about that as Hannity claims. If you don't want someone's opinion don't ask them for it fool. Simple as that. And Cenk is giving this to Hannity? WTF
