I think it's important to mention that the vocoder doesn't just drive the carrier sound with the source sound's amplitude, but also applies an EQ curve to the carrier sound based on the frequency profile of the source sound. This is why speaking into a vocoder results in speech that is still legible; the formants of your vowels and noisiness of your consonants are also applied to the carrier sound, along with the envelope. The frequency profile is generated by an FFT whose resolution you can control with the number of bands on the vocoder. More bands results in a more accurate mimicking of the frequency profile of your voice.
Correct! There's a whole bunch of things happening behind the scenes with the eq bands. That being said I always have to choose which content is worth putting into each one of these videos, I often try to prioritize application and interesting uses of the device over the nitty-gritty of how the algorithm works, but you're totally right! That stuff is very interesting to me also! Good teaching in my opinion is trying to find the right balance of content and application
All I can say is... Dayumm, one of the most useful vids I've seen in a while for Ableton... Especially the drum layering. Awesome vid!! Thank you for the sample link as well!🙌 #subbed and appreciated.
I don't have Ableton but I have an idea. What if you do some parallel processing? Imagine a vocal with delay. make the vocal sound untouched but make its delays sound vocodey, or vocoded.
Fun little device isn't it! I'm using the Rode Procaster, kinda like a cheaper version of the classic EV RE20 but still sounds quite crisp and smooth. You will need to get a level booster to use it though! Something like a cloudlifter or I use the SE DM1 Dynamite
Hey Luca, that was ace mate, I don't think I have used 0.000001 % of vocoder after watching you show us those awesome tips. Must go and practice more :)
How did you get hearing your voice throw voice coder live at 1:12 ? Without recording the voice and midi's from the synth? I could get it to work only after recording my voice and setting MIDI for for the carrier synth. Great vid! Gonna play around with it Thanks
Okay so I was essentially doing it all live! I had the vocoder getting information from the synth on another track, and whilst I was speaking I was playing chords on my keyboard. The vocoder will 'do its thang' on any audio information that comes through it right? So it doesn't really matter whether the audio is live or recorded, it's going to do the same thing either way. BUT if you don't have midi notes triggering the vocoder, it won't do anything, so try arming both tracks and playing the midi notes whilst you speak, or recording the midi notes first then speaking as ableton plays them. Hope this makes sense!
@@EDMProdDefinitely...I actually tried it on vocals last night, It worked out but I couldnt really get to that "daft punk" type of sound. The dry signal almost seemed parallel from the wet. Any suggestions? ...Ok nvm I figured it out 😮🔥
This tutorial has totally blown my mind and has inspired a shit load of creativity this morning with Ableton vocoder. A huge thanks.
So glad it was helpful!! Much appreciated :)

@@EDMProd Facts! The nitty gritty information is plenty available for those looking for it.
So is it safe to say that vocoding is the same as resynthesis? Does Abletone have any instrumenents capable of resynthesis?
Yes! Very important! Cant believe he just skipped that for simplicity.
That last one with the rhythm delayed was beautiful! Thanks for always sharing so much knowledge ♥
god, i loved it, too!!!!
My pleasure!! A fun little technique huh
Great vid, thanx! Sometimes I use the vocoder as a distortion effect on shakers & hihats with the noise as carrier and 30 - 70% dry/wet
Ooooh very nice idea! Definitely going to try this one
vocoder, i put that shit on everything. drums? vocoder. vocals? vocoder. synths? vocoder. My moms voicemail pestering me to call her more? vocoder.
The last part where you gave the pads some rhythm was pure magic! Thank you for the insight and inspiration!
Envelope follower mapped to a utility's gain would be a good choice for making stagnant sounds like pads have more rhythm
Watched 10 tutorials on the vocoder, still lost.. Watched EDMProd, clear in 3m, lol. Keep up the great work guys, Thanks a million.
It's not "replacing" it with the pure amplitude, since it maintains the illusion of syllabic information-it keeps the formant intact as well.
8:26 that sounds so great that I could build a song around it. Awesome 😎
Slynk has a good tutorial using vocoder to make like a stadium chant kinda thing.

Thank you for your complete and comprehensive training. Very good!
i just learned SO much oh my god. this just opened up a lot of ideas for me. thank you so much for sharing.
I love this technique man, thank you.
Mighty fine tutorial. You certainly know what you are talking about.
This is one of the best ableton videos I have ever seen, Thanks a lot!
Much appreciated anton!
that last layered technique was 🔥

like a modulated or filtered delay
I didn't even get as far in Live as to find out it comes with the Vocoder device. Man this is going to be so much fun on next jams. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Hope the jamming goes well :)
The last part is very cool 😎
You are a gem bro. These things you taught, were like magic. Thank you so very much.
Ayy appreciate that a lot! Thanks for watching :)
I use it once in a while for lo-fi drum loops
Great vid. Btw: you should turn down your back lights a touch.
Nice. I always struggled a little bit with getting the right sounds out of the vocoder, but this was a really nice simple breakdown.
I love it! Great job! Thank you.
Great tips! Ride on!!!!!
It's not simply the amplitude right, but the amplitudes off specific frequency ranges right?
Bro, awesome job.
This was awesome thanks bro
great stuff! love the bongos synth stab trick
Luca always comes up with the goods! 🇦🇺
Appreciate you! Thanks for watching :)
I like to enhance my hi-hats with the Vocoder on noise carrier.
Good trick! I better try this one out myself
3:30 Ayy Dale GASOLINA
Amazing!
How do you set the vocoder in order to listen only the wet voice in the speakers (output)?
Good one!
Thanks!!
thank you !
Secret sause of every color bass producer lol
Awesome!
Love this! First vid of yours I've seen, youtube thought I'd like it and they were right! :)
Welcome my friend! Glad you enjoyed :))
i have ableton live 11 standard and i don't have a wavetable. i've tried to look for it but idk where it is. can someone please help
Absolutely sick tips right here, can't wait to try this out! Btw, what mic are you using? Seems very versatile

Awesome! Main question first, can the HD25 headphones be used for production? 😮 i believe that’s what you are wearing!!
Hey Pavan! Yeah these headphones aren't my first choice.. my DT880s are currently being repaired because my dog accidentally broke the cable lol
@@EDMProd haha okay cheers! I just happened to buy the DT770 Pro, i was wondering if I hurried as i also have the HD25/, thanks for clarifying 👌👍

DUUUDE! crazy! thanks!
love this!!!vocoder is a powerful tool!!
100%! Super powerful and fun too
more tuts like this !
amazing
sick vid
Don't think that can be used in every genre or in every tracks, but can add some groove, that's cool.
Is there anything that could be used in every genre, and every track? Technically yes, but also no. What even is a genre?
@@UnseenEternalStudios You're right.
why not?
I haven't actually tried it on vocals yet lol
I know rightt, just soo many uses for it
