how do we know that phoenix is bad on ascent if this guy isn't out there fighting the good fight for us
To be clear, phoenix on ascent might be the best duelist for all we know.
That doesn't mean it's smart to pick it in the current meta where you have no resources available to learn from top Phoenix Ascent VODs.
It frustrates me when I point this out, because people always interpret it as me saying "this agent is objectively bad". I recently closed a Deadlock VOD on Split because there are no good high level Deadlock split VODs to learn from. How can I teach something which I cannot learn? Everytime I point this out it's inevitable that someone will then go "but what about Curry doing Deadlock only" or "how about this one off season pro game" or "but I think she's really good". Very hard for me because I'm not saying she's bad, I'm saying that the high ELO scene _thinks_ she's bad, and so they don't pick her. Which leads to insufficient resources to study for an aspiring climber.
By all means once you get up to Radiant start theorycrafting your own niche agent picks, but until then if you genuinely want to climb as fast as possible heed my warning and drop the goofy off meta picks in ranked.
@@Woohoojinanother w from hooj. the point is that there is no proof that phoenix is good on ascent. hell even prx doesn’t run pheonix here.
@@Woohoojin I volunteer to give you a good phoenix on ascent
can confirm i have stopped fighting the good fight ✊

He's just roasting his mumbling, his rank and poor man's whole existence 😭😭😭
deserved 😔i have now switched to being a yoru one trick so i'm not sure i followed his instructions
@@scotthuffman3462 I beg to differ. Many of his students are in the high school/college range, so teens-twenties, and predominantly male as well. I think being harsh at times is a good wake up call to see what we are doing wrong. Yes, sometimes it’s quite brutal and embarassing for the other person, but Hooj does a good job explaining the mistake and the way to fix it after, and his advice has been quite solid. In the end, it leaves a strong impression on the person, his coached students have consistently climbed up after his coaching, and it gets a laugh out of his wider audience. So yes, feelings may be hurt, but in the grand scheme of things, the student will be better off.
@@adityadesai4724 there are people who consistently climb to rank 1 with yoru, yoru on ascent is definitely a very good substitute for phx on ascent because there are more vods with specific, repeatable and actually confirmed to be decent tech (for ranked anyway)
Just watch how eggster plays ascent, go to his stream and pick a vod and skip to where he plays ascent there'll be like things for you to learn guaranteed
@@quickfingers7062plus hooj has a LOT of reqs to even submit a vod, so his students consent to it
@@adityadesai4724 Watch eggster, he's the literal best.
I can't wait for him to review a deadlock 1 trick and lose it 😊

Ive been one tricking deadlock and she is actually very strong on split 😂
@@lonelyone69Deadlock can be alright against low elo. But so can any other agent. The issue with deadlock is that she is a sentinel that just can’t… sentinel. Any other sentinel (aside from maybe sage) would be better than her. Once you get players that learn to play around her she becomes pretty useless
@@lonelyone69 you are good on split, not deadlock
Does hooj even accept deadlick vods??
FYI for someone who used to mumble a lot, it was due to having hearing issues myself, as you can hear your internal voice a lot louder when your ears aren't working properly.
How did you fix it?
@@gabrielbehailu4 I have a hearing issue, had an op for it on one ear. Probably will need to get another for my other ear :(. Look up Stapedectomy operation
actually, the opposite is also true. I have worse hearing than most, and in my case and many other cases I've heard of, you tend to speak louder because you don't hear yourself properly.

As a yoru one trick, I will continue playing yoru only until i hit rank 1.
as a former reyna 1 trick, i will continue "locking yoru until i hit rank 1" until i get bored and frustrated i flash myself and the other team is too deaf to hear my fake tp 1000iq play, and lock reyna and play 2 GODLY games and then play shit because my aim is inconsistent, then play omen and play slightly better but still bad because i need better gamesense but stay for a bit bc shrouded step is fun, then lock fade and realise i forgot every lineup and her eye is instantly broken, then play my original main skye and realised shes GARBAGE now, and then go back to yoru because im so depressed and need a fun agent

Keep it up baby!
Thanks guys! You too keep up the carries un comp.

honestly thanks for this. I've been trying to main kay/o on literally every map, but i don't play comfortably on some maps with him, like Bind. now I know that if need be, i can focus on an agent role, not a specific agent per se.
I swear man, his Analogy game is hecking GOATED
i used to use a graph paper pad from walmart as my mousepad. it had the width i needed to reasonably play on low sens, and the texture was surprisingly good. recently, though, i got a real, desk wide mousepad, so that's what i'm using.
I main jett and after i started seriously grinding was super happy to learn i can genuinely one trick her and find tons of pro prep on every single map to study. Love the vids as always Hooj
I feel like Ascent is the map where I see Phoenix the most now that Haven is gone, even in pro play. Natan from Gentle Mate (EU) often plays it in ranked and in pro play (was Tier 2 game mostly)
i love that chess analogy and will be using it for coaching in my game of choice. ty woohoojin
9:14 negl, ur chat was so real for this. Ty Woojin for this amazing opportunity
thank u for the vod review mr banana man i now religiously study eggster vods. i have become a yoru one trick and cannot wait to submit a vod and find out my comms are still totally inarticulate even if i think they make sense 🙏
I recently got back into Valorant, last time I played was before Iso was released. I'm currently relearning stuff through banana man's videos and it's been awesome.
woohoojin with your help i was able to make it to radiant from plastic bag 1 in 2 days thank you 😊😊😊
I always start giggling when Hooj does his higher pitched voice
I lost focus at the exact same time you did and you took me back by talking about it 😂
LETS GOO HOOJ VOD
wsg hooj you helped me improve so much tysm
I was a pheonix main for 4 seasons. Ascent on pheonix was the catalyst to getting me start playing other characters and actually start winning. My ADR and KD was insane on Pheonix only, but I was barely above a 50% winrate.
for a few years in highschool when I still played R6 siege I used the back of an A4 exam pad, still hit those tho :3
personally, I like to know the "Why" since things don't stick in my head unless I know the idea, the mechanics, and the details. Mostly why I like watching these vod reviews and waiting to find more pro players names that people suggest, mostly for Sova, Yoru and omen, since I'm brand new to the game but like watching woohoojins details.
Hey I've seen a lot of videos and I'd like to improve myself. Im an ecuadorian player (spanish speaker but I dominate English) and I dont know a lot of pros. Where can I find good vods?
"Who pros play phoenix on ascent???"
Loud - "Hold my beer"
I heard from a radiant I played with; you should be good in 2 maybe 3 agents. Duelist, initiator/sentinel and/or control.
Hey Bananaman big fan but could you add the full vod link it's missing
Where can I search up for vods. I main cypher and cannot find enough cypher plays for different maps. Can I get some recommendations?
Was thinking "it happened again?!" and then saw the Xmas Banana and the link to the vod from December 12th 😂
early so i get to say, hooj ty so much for your awesome guides, i got out of iron into bronze 3 in 1 day! ty
What’s your opinion on watching xtr’s vids to learn about pheonix on all maps
I was expecting XTR's VODs to popup. That guy is a phoenix 1 trick and he's damn good.
Hey hooj or viewers, I want to ask what if there are no pro vods for your agent on a certain map. My particular case is harbor on new breeze with halls added back. Since the change is pretty recent and I'd assume that it'll take a while before any new breeze vods for hecking harbor will show up. What should I do in the meanwhile?
i need to send you a vod bro omg 😂😂😂 im new started in december (90 hours played)
I legit used a laptop sleeve case. Practically a big mouse pad.
It’s funny you say that hooj I also feel like were teleporting around the map
Me who has one tricked 1000 breach games in a row sweating nervously
I am so confused by this video. As a Phoenix main, I have found trouble finding good vods for a couple of maps, and the ones I have found are not on your recommended list or extremely old to the point the map is now different.
I suck at valorant, and I am okay with that, but the idea of having to learn multiple agents for different maps seems scary to say the least. I managed to hit platinum after 350hrs by learning only one agent because of Hooj's advice, but it seems now it is not enough.
I don't know if I managed to get my point across, but in any case, great video!
Hey! I think the takeaway from this video for you is to maybe try and diversify your agent pool without diverging too much from skills you have developed. Learning new agents can be daunting, and of course you won't immediately pop off, but it's a good idea to have at least one backup agent. Agents aren't created equal and some are much more flexible to be one-tricked, while others have maps where they don't find much value and become niche or experimental.
You could branch off to playing kayo for similar popflashing while being more supportive for the team. If you're really locked in on being duelist-only then you should probably go with jett that's solid in maps like ascent where phoenix is very uncommon.
From what I've seen whj's advice about one-tricking is that it helps you develop your intuition much faster with said agent, while also making it easier for you to focus on macro-related concepts because you need less effort to play an agent you're more familiar with (which is true). But he draws the line once that one-tricking style becomes a hinderance and not an advantage, which was the case for this vod. The player's issues arised when he showed that he didn't have solid plans or prep to play that agent for the map even though he was an OTP (kind of), and if you were to OTP an agent then you need to show proper prep (considering you want to rank up and not just play casually).
So like, if you still want to rank up then you can choose between dipping your toes into other agents or become really nerdy with phoenix. If you're chilling where you're at then just play whatever agent you enjoy. Cheers! :)
One comment I noticed you made in the video was how pros don’t play Phoenix on Ascent, and that’s why there isn’t any good VODs. I was wondering what criteria you use to determine what is a good VOD to study vs a bad one?
9:52
You say this and I was just like "what happened to the last 15 seconds of my life?"
got a long mouse pad for my keyboard and mouse for like 9.99 at the store lol, no excuse for small mouse pads
11:44 I don't have enough desk space but I use the mouse acceleration apps, do you think I should stick with it or not use them
As a rule of thumb, mouse acceleration is usually not ideal for fps games because it's inconsistent and tends to mess with your aim

I've heard this phrase a lot lately and I don't get what it means.
(sorry if this is inappropriate, just trying to learn English, love your content)
Think of it as a better way to say "I went through the whole thing"
Jett one tricks ASSEMBLE!
4:33 I don’t know if you can make this claim. There is only one axis on which you compete in chess. The mental. If you are good at the mental axis of chess you are good at chess. In Valorant you compete on 2 axis mental and physical. You could be good at the mental axis and not good at the physical axis and then you aren’t going to be that high of a rank. Granted this guy didn’t really have good of a reason and being in diamond odds are he probably doesn’t have good understanding, but understanding correct macro play and strategy and being able to execute it quickly and correctly in the heat of the moment are not the same thing.
I think a better heuristic is if the reasoning is sound not “ does a pro do it”
To me it’s a bit like saying you can only be a good basketball coach if you were a professional player. Greg Popovich and Bill Belichick are both probably the greatest coaches of all time in their respective sports and never played professionally.
Well in valorant the people who are best on the mental axis are the pros, or the people who prepare with the pros such as team coaches, similar to your basketball analogy. But no one is going to have a talk with a pro team coach to learn good plays and stuff. The easiest ways to see how to do that is to just watch pro vods. I will say that Hooj's analogy isn't all too great since technically not all prep is actually created by GMs or IMs. The top GMs with teams sometimes have like FMs doing some of their prep work but Hooj's point still stands.
im a harbor one trick with like no pro vods to learn from
So thats why my winrate is so low on ascent as a phoenix main... (38% on E7:A3)

so guys any name for the pro who play phoenix ascent ?
woohoojin asmr video when
no money for mouse pad or new pc so i watch ur videos for ranking up T T
Alright fineeeeeee I'll not just play cypher and learn killjoy on icebox/s
When you were deriding the Pheonix early in the video for lack of justification on making a suboptimal play during Pistol, you mentioned that lower rated players generally don't create strategies. I don't know much about Valorant still as I'm learning and new, but is this always true?
I know this is a bit apples to oranges in terms of genre, and I'm new to FPS, but I would say in League it is quite rare for theorycrafters or coaches to be higher rated or even to able to execute the specific strategies or gameplans they come up with. From my perspective, there is not necessarily a correlation with understanding the game at a high level and being able to adequately perform those actions.
I don't want to defend the pheonix cause 99 times out of a hundred, there really is no deeper meaning behind "i just dont like the play," but I just wanted clarification about this. I understand as a newer player, the best thing I can do is mimic and try to understand the reasoning behind any action when I review pro VODs, but is it really a waste of time to see if there is any way to improve on those actions below like Immortal or Radiant?
Just a note, if you want to see a pro Phoenix Ascent vod, FNS instalocks Phoenix when he's titled in ranked 😂
Loud played phoenix consitently on Acent
why is your laugh in reverse? like instead of ha ha ha, you laugh like, ɐɥ ɐɥ ɐɥ
As the representative of the gekko community I’m scared to show the gekko one trick vods…
gekko is kinda the heat lately, so many ppl (pros) picking him up
2:4O the reason for him peeking cubby from connector is that even if the opponent had ghost it would still take 2 dings for the opponent to kill him due to light shields. And if he had a sheriff it would be a lot harder for the opponent to hit him due to phoenixes fast strafes which makes sense since bloom from classic is reset faster than bloom from sheriff. Good swing and good aim imo.
The more I watch the vid, the more I feel bad for the phoenix main
I play only yoru because i enjoy the agent
xtr my bro
Well we figured who plays phoenix on ascent
I don’t even use a mouse pad for val or any other games I play so it is completely unnecessary
phoenix ascent is such a troll pick unless ur constantly abusing ur wall

I bought a really wide mouse pad on Amazon for $10 specifically because I died too often from being unable to 180 without picking up my mouse. Surely everyone who has the time to dump into Valorant can afford a $10 mousepad?
