This is without question, the best and most thorough instruction I have seen and heard in my 72 years on this earth. I have seen and heard a bunce. What a teacher. You are on target. Thanks so much.
I am 4 minutes and 22 seconds into this video and it is without question the most entertaining Duck calling video on youtube. Instant subscribe. Well done.
I just started attempting to learn a cutdown a couple weeks ago and while I haven’t mastered it yet I have figured out some things with it but the biggest thing is the improvement of my air control. I’ve been decent blowing a regular ole single reed but since I started trying to learn the cutdown I go back to the single reed and I’ve noticed a massive improvement in my air control
Excellent content, I will use this video to improve my proficiency with the call. Good easy to follow instructions. I will also be checking out the reading ducks video.
I had an expert help.me with cutdowns. He learned to cut calls at lower vallier campground from old timers that cut olts using files on cinder blocks. He said to run a cutdown by "Cook Cook cook Cook cook....hard. Cook sounds cuts notes hard on both ends. You can really push the call and hit it hard immediately...way less spit. Try it That's your bark. To feed call do "tuh tuh tuh tuh...hard and randomly. He acted it out I a parking lot and I made lots of call videos so he could coach remotely. According to my friend I've mastered a d2 olt cutdown.
I blow a cutdown and a regular duck call the same except for air presentation. A regular duck call is with a large mouth cavity (reference words like "quit"), but a cutdown is a small mouth cavity (reference words like toot). Air presentation to a cut down is more like a flute goose call. Once you give it pressurized air, you don't have to blow that hard. Most people try to blow a cut down like a regular call, but they try to blow the end out of it until they're about to pass out.
Thanks for putting this together! I've been looking for an instructional video for cut downs and haven't found much. Last year I had someone cut down my grandpa's old P.S. Olt so I could use it in the field. Just starting to get the hang of it.
My d2 olt can be blown like a cutdown or you can sweet talk too by getting low. Practice until you can squeal at the end of notes then you are there in the zone..
Thank you for the video, I bought one last year. I was have tempted to give it away because I didn't know how to properly use one. When I bought one everyone said they are hard to use! Again thanks for the video. Time to practice!!
So I picked up a mondo last year while in Mack’s and got plum discouraged with it and took it off my lanyard and stopped playing with it. I watched this video 2 days ago and just picked the call back up 30 minutes ago and I have made some MAJOR improvements with it already. I can actually make sound like a duck now. I’m no expert on calling with j-frames either but I’m getting decent after a year or so of playing.
Just picked one up and it blows well. Never used a cutdown but I feel like it was relatively easy to transfer my knowledge over to it. Like joel said its different but it's the same.
I've been waiting for this tutorial for a long time so thank you. Practiced all the way home from work. I got the Mondo 2b because I liked the subtle sound difference and can't wait to break it out this season! Thanks for the great work Joel! (I thought that cedar box was a great story until I saw the SDS logo and hologram- were all the rest of those items in it?)
@@SurvivingDuckSeason Oh no don't get me wrong, big star wars guy! I was just curious about the story of the bus like Chris McCandless. It was an unexpected story telling turn but that's what keep us coming back
@@Drblood6721 right on. Yeah, the bus story was true. The box was actually from my grandfather’s home. Those were his items. He was born in 1900 and passed away in 1985.
Thanks for the master class in calling Joel! I'm curious, is what you and I call the chop-chop call what others call the comeback call? I have several single and double reed calls but never owned a cut-down. That may change soon!
Jeremy, there may be some who call it a come-back... but a comeback is an entirely different call, in my opinion. Honestly I've heard people call all sorts of things "a comeback call" lol. I have talked about the comeback call on some of my other videos. It is a long note pleading call- similar to a greeting call. A call that is used very sparingly. Thanks for watching!
@@SurvivingDuckSeason That's what I figured. I remember seeing your video on the comeback call, but I've seen other videos where it and the chop-chop seem blurred. The comeback is definitely more like a plea. It and the hail call are something I might try once a season and after they don't work I pretty much stick with your last in the video. Thank you for putting it great content. Hope to get the opportunity to hunt with you some day!!
Joelbiwan Kenobi!!! 😂🤣👍👍👍 I've been hunting since the late 80's but I never knew what a cutdown call even was, much less how to call with one. Thanks for the info! And may the force be with you!!!
Hey Joel, A thought I just had. Could you possibly explain the difference or what makes a cut down call in comparison to a regular or non- cut down call...
Record yourself. If you have buddies that are good at calling ask them how you sound. Don’t worry if they tell you it’s not great thats what I did and they told me that all the time, until I finally got good I could see it on their faces lol they could no longer tell me I was bad. Even had them asking for tips on specific sounds. Don’t take it personally, take it critically and work on it.
Joel thank you so much for making this video, I’ve had the same issue in finding any information on it so I’ve been experimenting myself. I got a comment back from somebody from Rich N Tone once that helped me along the way. Like you he sugg. I trim the length a hair. Otherwise I was just copying you lol that’s why I bought the call in the first place, because of your videos. Have you found the reed sticking when using lower pressure? I get it especially on the feed call. It gets stuck distorts and makes a higher sort of raspy squeak unless I put a ton more air through it. So that makes the feed chuckle very hard unless I have a very full breath. Anyway after about two weeks it started sounding good, I’m going on about four months now.
You’re welcome, Chris. I haven’t had the call stick in the way you described. I do occasionally get a stick after I’ve been blowing for a long time and it gets too much condensation in it.
@@SurvivingDuckSeason That could just be it, I pick it up too many times randomly during the day and should probably dry it out. Thanks for the reply, great video and nice work, the play on Star Wars was priceless!
Man the cutdown is different and, yes, it's a different technique. But it's not THAT hard. I now have a Mondo alongside my Stinson and don't see how it is much different than blowing different J frames, let's say an Echo vs an RNT. Just a bit of an adjustment. Oh. And where is that Stinson review? Still stand by him to the end!
I'm not sure which Mondo you are comparing to a regular J-frame... possibly the LT model? The LT is lightened up significantly and is very easy to blow, but not nearly as loud as the other models. Now that I have been blowing a cutdown for years, I now tend to over-blow regular calls because they are so light. It only take a second for me to remember to blow differently.
Yes it is an LT. I was just surprised it seemed to blow so much easier than the other cutdowns that I'm trying (with varied success thus far lol) to learn.
It depends on the type of sound you like, and how much time you’re willing to put into calling. You can certainly start easy and work your way through different calls. If you can be disciplined, then pick any call that you want to learn and go buy it and learn it! Echo makes some great calls, so does RNT, and many other brands. My next video will touch on this. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
So I'm looking at an RNT Mondo and there is a lot of options. I've noticed in a lot of your vids that you're blowing a shorter barrel version over your original DC mondo. I'm curious as to why? Also, would you recommend a certain shorter barrel for someone who is just beginning on a cutdown? My friend gifted me a Singleton Cutdown for Christmas and I am having a hard time getting it to sound even remotely good. This video has been a great starting point (so thank you) but is there anything I can be doing to practice effectively? Thanks for your vids and guidance from this green waterfowler
I just like the feel of the shorter call. I don’t find it easier to blow. It’s the same insert as the original. Singleton makes a good call too. It just takes a long time for many guys to get good on cut downs. It took me a year or so to get decent on mine.
Very nice tutorial. I've been working on blowing a cut down style call since last Spring. Still not quite ready for using in the field, but will use this video to help me practice moving forward.
What makes the cut down physically different from other calls? What's "cut down" in order to make it a more versatile call, and consequently, more difficult to blow?
Oh there's more... my cutdown is custom. Why? I'm small. My guy cut the barrel and tone board down both on my olt d2 keyhole cutdown. It fits my little tiny hand. One of a kind. The man who cut it learned many years ago from old timers who cut the same calls with files on cinder blocks at Lower Vallier campground. Bayou Meto.
Really? Do you touch your teeth with your tongue? Sorry Joel but that's completely the opposite of what I was taught by a callmaker who learned his trade at the lower Vallier camp ground at The Metro.
Thanks for watching! Let me know how this video has helped you on your journey as a cutdown caller!

Blow it like your trying to blow the insert out of it and it will start to make sense. It's a sharper harder breath of air
To add onto that other comment, he’s more likely than not tuned his reed to his style of air presentation. Order some reeds and start snipping!
