Hello Nicole! I"m loving all the advice you're giving! I"m researching TAB for my classroom next year. My question is... With kids playing, experimenting, and exploring, is there a lot of wasted materials? I"m limited on art supplies and i"m worries about running out from kids being wasteful. Thanks for your reply.
Yes, there's waste, but there's also more opportunity to reuse. My budget went WAAAAAYYYY further with a TAB program. I no longer had to buy class sets of materials so I was able to save money there, plus we started using tons and tons of donated and recyclable materials.
Hi Nicole, This video gave me some great ideas. I do still want to know how you manage students getting saved work out if it's all in one class folder? Do you allow one station at a time to retrieve work, call numbers or just let students work it out? Thanks in advance for your response.
Hi Sara! I typically just let the kids go to their folder and grab what they need. I call students a few at a time (randomly using popsicle sticks and art numbers) to grab their materials so that things don't get too congested in one area (like their class folder). However, a few times I've gone through the folder at the beginning of class, calling names out and having them come and grab them. That's a nice option because sometimes they forget (I see them once a week) and me going through and calling out names, helps them to remember what they started the previous week. Try a couple things and see what works best for you!
Hi there! We adopted the National Core Art Standards and they are very choice- friendly. I was able to cover everything in my curriculum and more while still offering students choice.
It's been awhile since I used my state standards, and while they are outdated, I'm sure I'd be able to cover those while offering choice too - might just have to get a little more creative.
Hi there! I am just a month into running a TAB k-5 classroom, and we are all loving it, but the storage of art has been a bit of a headache! This video helps immensely! My question though, once students complete artworks, do you send them home? If so, how do you navigate displaying artworks for kids and potentially parents to enjoy? Thank you!
Hi there! So once kids complete their work they have the option to display or not to display. We talk about how and why artists display their work, then we discuss how to display. So, my older kids will mount their 2D work onto paper and tack it up to the bulletin board strips outside the classroom along with a super simple artist statement. I don't have a whole lot of room for 3D displays, so the kids can photograph their 3D work and I print a picture for them to display. We also display digitally in our Artsonia portfolios - so regardless of whether they are displaying in the hallway or not, I have them take a photo and put it in their digital portfolio so their families can see.
Hi Nicole- I discovered you after an art teacher friend told me about your instagram and RUclips channel. First, thanks so much for the videos and sharing information. This will be my 6th year teaching with the TAB philosophy and I love it. This year I am traveling to teach art at two schools, so I am looking for some "hacks" to help me streamline and simplify two art studios!! I have found your explanations and methods clear, concise, and simple which is awesome. I have two suggestions- one is, it would be wonderful if you could slip in some videos of your actual classroom in these at-home videos instead of only still photos. Something about videos helps me see it more clearly- for example, I'd love to see the actual art folder and you opening it and showing the artwork inside. Also, I'd love a future video on how you manage a gradebook- paper or digital, etc. I enjoyed your assessment video as well. Thanks for all you do to promote choice and TAB!
Hi Elizabeth, Thanks so much for your feedback and suggestions! I will add them to the list :) I have a few IG friends who travel between two classrooms, so I will ask them to see if they have any tips for you!
Hi Elizabeth! I've found some connections for you on IG who have some tips for streamlining your two studios! Send me a DM on IG and I'll share there! @bigideasartstudio

How would this worl at a public school? Dont they usually want you to abide by their cirriculum?
