    My favorite “tool” is freezer paper. I buy the large size, and I use it to stabilize sheer , see through fabric. I iron it to the fabric, cut and sew through it. I remove it before I secure the second sewing when working with French seams.

    The markers and hem clips! I also use the white paper from our local butcher shop, it's on a huge role I don't know how many miles are on it. I know you said that one roll of tissue paper from the medical supply last you forever, and it's really great that it is see through. But if you're wanting a white paper to draft a pattern on like your T-shirt patterns or creating a new dress or anything else, I use the butcher paper. I get it to foot wide, we also use it for a lot of other things. If you have children it makes great happy birthday signs or celebration signs that you tape across your cabinets and tear down the next day. They can also lay down on it and you can drive around them and make a silhouette for your children to color in their own portrait. But mainly we also use it for we butcher our own deer meat, and Wild game so we use it for wrapping that up and putting it in the freezer too. This is just plain freezer pay on a huge role it's white it's heavy and it's wonderful

    Good tips, thank you.
    One quibble: Made in Japan did equal cheap, shoddy goods when I was a teen (that would be 50+ years ago). Nowadays, the quality of goods made in Japan is usually good, often excellent and frequently better than things made in the US.

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  5 лет назад

      Hello there, thank you for stopping by! Totally agree, quality of things made in Japan is great, I just could not wrap my head around why 12 markers cost the same as 2 from Jo Ann's.... I guess my vocal intonation did not translate exactly what I meant, now that I watched that part after your comment - I can TOTALLY see what you mean :)

    • @ClaudiaArnold
      @ClaudiaArnold 3 года назад

      @@ThoughtfulCreativity That's because of Joanne's being a brick-and-mortar store. But Made in Japan is likely the same as Made in Germany - when Great Britain forced this label in German imports around 1900, it was to show the buyer that this was not the high-quality original made in England, but a cheap, kludged copy, a "Fritz". It became a sign of high quality only much later.

    I needed a new pair of fabric scissors. I have always wanted Ghinger scissors. Well they are like $60 some bucks at Joannes and then even if you use a coupon they are still $30 some. So I went on Amazon and they had them for $17.50!!!!! And oh man are they nice!! Credit for this find is from Bernadette Banner channel!

      To be honest I love the challenge of a good bustle in a wedding gown and figuring out how to get a gown that is 3 sizes to small to fit. I also love being part of the memories of my clients. Prom and homecoming is great for that. I have pictures from my "girls" all dolled up and makes me feel so good knowing im part of it somehow.

    I already have all but one of these tools. I thought I should react to the metric tool you mentioned. 45 years ago the USA promised we would change to the metric system. I was thrilled. Now I am disappointed. Learning the metric system is handy for any home sewer. It is much easier to be accurate and precise in measuring. It is much easier to increase and decrease patterns when fitting because the arithmetic is so much easier. I wish more sewing tools came in the metric system.

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  3 года назад +1

      I grew up with metric system and could not agree more - so much easier. But since we now live in US, I use inches in the vids, but off camera - mostly metric system.

    If you want to draw very fine lines on fabric, try erasable ballpoint pens. Lines go easily after ironing. One will last forever since they won't dry up.

    Interesting tools, I’ve never seen those hem clips! And I absolutely love medical tracing paper, I’m already on my third roll :) although it’s really not as cheap on the Canadian amazon! One of my favourite tools is a bodkin, I use it to pass elastic through channels.

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  5 лет назад +1

      Bodkin - great suggestion - now that I sew a lot of baby clothes and elastic is a must - I should probably invest in one! Thank you, Rimma and yay for medical paper!!! Oh man, it seems that anything sewing related is a bit pricier in Canada than in USA. Ugh!

    I have to mention ink pen that dissapear once iron. This is such a nice tool. They are from Pilot and are called Frixion earasable. The point is sharp and clean, they come in a pack of 5 colors for less than 4$. I used them every day. I have also bout the silicone bobbin stopper. You put your little bobbin (the one that goes under the machine) on one side and you insert the other side in the real bobbin. This way you always have your thread ready. I did purchase the silicone thing on Alibaba with the 100 piece minimum. I have only 20 not use yet and the price was way less than what is usually offered on the internet.

      But do the markers you suggested remain washable after ironing? Sometimes this sets the dye. I use the Pilot Frixxon for writing, but as I iron very often they would not do for sewing, at least not for me.

    I have been using plastic drop cloth rolls for pattern tracing, but I am not skilled enough to really need that much permanence, and I dislike using plastic for temporary things if at all, so thank you for the paper suggestion!
    I have found that Amazon is either a great deal, OR they charge way more than other places, so my suggestion is general, make sure you check the prices available as Amazon doesn't necessarily put the best deal up front.
    An aside: I LOVE metric and wish I didn't have to go back and forth so much because ideally I prefer metric for linear and weight measurements (I also cook and bake a lot). I am currently converting my recipes to weight as well as metric for more consistency in the results and for the math impaired (like me) doing everything in multiples of 10 makes any math jobs easier.
    Right now though, keeping both styles active in my brain can get a little confusing at times LOL

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  4 года назад

      Great suggestions, Michele - that is what my mom does with her patterns, she uses clear plastic! And you are right- Amazon goes both ways, so need to check the price ALWAYS! :) AND 100% agree on the metric system, I grew up with it so it comes easy to me :)

    How about that kind of paper fabric used for surgery uniforms, etc... Can it really be used to make first trials of patterns? I have a really big problem with patterns, and it is that I take my measurements, go to sizes table, find my size (supposedly), and sew my outfit... Then I see that my oitfit is 3 or 4 sizes bigger?? Omg!!! So I would like to begin to cut my first pattern in that paper favric, and then when I make all the corrections, make it in the real fabric... Could it work?

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  5 лет назад

      Christina - I think it could! I have hear of Swedish pattern paper, which is very similar to what you are describing - a pattern paper that is woven and you can actually sew together (simple stitches) and make alterations. Look it up - it might be a solution to what you are thinking! You know... some patterns are just run big no matter how accurately you measure yourself. I recently printed out a t shirt pattern, measure myself, cut out size M, had to go down to size XXS and it was still waaay to big. I gave up, lol :)
