Kenji is back at cha with another great Core Set 2019 draft. M19 has shown to be a super fun, versatile format with plenty of room to grow.

"I'm worried out a Rabid Bite here..."
    "Could be Bite here"
"Worried bout a Rabid Bite here.."
    Etc
    Etc
    Etc
    I love Kenji.

18:20...why not swing with the team? i mean, I know he ended up losing that game anyways, but...If opp blocks one way he gets 5 damage in, loses a guy, but then can buy it back with the Marshal. Or the other way, still trade and get 4 damage in. Right?

1:04 p1p2 dont like it. sovereign is amazing obv. but bite is a great on-color card. i think taking sovereign means you either dont play one of your first two picks or you lock yourself into G/B, neither of which seems great. i think i like taking the slightly worse (but still great) on color card and staying open much more than branching out into a double black card.

taking a BB card isn't a big problem given that all the cards you want to play in black are BB, like Caress/Murder, Plagemare, the non-Planeswalker rares

I agree. Sovereign is pretty good, but removal is removal.
rr ww The main point isn't that it has two mana colored mana symbol, but that it commits to G/B early when taking Rabid Bite is a good pick up that keeps him open to other colors. He is highly incentivized to play green with a huge rare bomb and Rabid Bite is a great follow up that cuts the color he should be focusing on.

it isnt about being able to cast sovereign. sovereign is great and B/G is fine but the point is that taking a slightly worse (but still very good) on color card is probably always better than a slightly more powerful card that locks you in to 2 colors right off the bat. and while taking sovereign doesnt necessarily have to lock you into B/G, if you dont end up being B/G than it means you wasted one of your top 2 picks and didnt play one of your likely 2 or 3 best creatures.
and while you dont want to be results oriented, he did take 4 different colors in his first 5 picks and ended up with a deck that was short solid playables.
ftr if i opened a garbage pack 2 with sovereign i would snap pick it. not over bite though after starting with a green bomb.

JimBob Johanssen he said while picking VS that he thinks VS is a bomb so thats probably why. Also he wanted to stay open (and it kinda worked - there werent any green cards in pack 1 because there were at least 2 other green drafters).

lol what are you talking about??? he could have had wurm, bite, spider, 2x basilisk in the first like 6-7 picks. also if he really wanted to stay open he would have taken the bite and waited on a 2nd color. taking a 1st pick wurm and 2nd pick sovereign actually does the opposite; it forces you into heavy B/G.

what's wrong with sovereign bite? its a mono black lightning helix and the life gain is nothing to shrug at in a life gain matters bw deck especially in a format that mostly revolves around winning with combat damage.

Lighting helix is a removal most of the times, effects that give you nothing on board or draw a card/some value are bad most of the time. It does nothing when you're behind on board, its bad in topdeck battles; its only ok if youre ahead and youre scared you will get burned by some red decks... and then it only gives 3 life.

Its more like Vampire Siege Rhino.

Vampire sovereign =/= sovereign bite :p

if you're in a Sealed event and you have an aggro pool with Deckhands, and Aven Wind Mage I'd run 1.
if you had the 'ultimate life gain deck' with at least 1 Resplendent Angel I'd run 1.

Burn like that is completely useless in limited unless it is killing your opponent. It's bad for the same reason that lifegain just for the sake of lifegain is bad.

Another draft, another streamer recoiling from the green cards as though they burned his hand.

That final is exactly why magic can only be played for casual fun in my case. Draws like that just make the game entirely ridiculous to play in any reproducible fashion affected by skill.
