The vertical take off is actually military maneuver. They have a secure area on the ground about 300 feet out. If they were to fly horizontal they could actually more at risk from a shoulder mounted rocket. This way they climb to an altitude that is out of range for this type of weapon. For security this is the best maneuver.
@Larry Higgison - The vertical takeoff is known as a "Category A" departure used in confined areas with certain certified multi-engine helicopters. It guarantees that the aircraft will either be able to fly-away or land back on the same area it just took off from in case of an engine failure.
