    Mary, you are inspirational. The best book I’ve read on songwriting was “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft” by Stephen King, which wasn’t really about songwriting, but
    about writing in general. Many aspects are parallel. Stephen King is an avid guitarist who rewards himself by playing guitar after finishing hours of writing. You nailed the basic principles of both - tell a story; practice your craft; read to be a good writer (or listen and learn songs to be a good songwriter); and, keep at it for yourself because only you can create whatever you’re capable of creating.

    Writing has been one of the few outlets in my life where I can really truly be myself, without the weight of the worlds expectations falling down on my every act. I think it is because of this that I am able to write dark, gritty or tragic poems so easily. There are times when I want to write something upbeat, am almost exploding with that desire and I cannot find the words. These are the times when my go-to, my darkness, becomes a road to writing the happy piece I want to end up with. I almost always enter my writing in a dark place, but over the course of many lines, sometimes many pages, I can gently guide the theme down a path to something brighter.
    In this way the darkness that is always there almost acts like a doorway to other kinds of writing for me. I have found that the key to writing isn't about the place you want your song or poem to end up, it's about accepting where you have to start, the roads you have to take to get there. Writing is largely a journey of discovery, an adventure, a hero's arc if you will. It will take you down many roads you did not expect to travel before you reach the place you intended to go. Accepting that has, for me at least, been the transformative in how I approach the keyboard or notepad.
    Beautiful video! Thank you for sharing with us!

    Great advice! Coming from the perspective of a professional writer (print, not songs) the ‘don’t wait for inspiration’ bit is something I tell to young writers all the time. Write every day. If you can’t figure out where to start, start with the alphabet until words start coming out. You’re going to throw most of it out anyway, so let it all come. If you can, write at the same time(s) every day. Your muse isn’t going to come along every day - don’t make yourself hard to find.

    My favorite part about songwriting, or any art form really, is the storytelling :)

  • @gins8781
    @gins8781 4 года назад

    I wish I had preserved much of my songwriting. Writing was cathartic, but I felt that letting go by destroying my creation was equivalent to letting go of the past in a positive way. I feel very differently about that now and regret not saving my works. Although I can remember the gist of a song, the details are lost. The specific turn of phrase that inspires you to to keep going with a song cannot be underestimated. Documenting your journey is invaluable.

    Songs are simply short, short stories. Lyrics or music first? It happens both ways. Also, using different guitars can lead to different types of songs. Thank you, Mary! You’ve given me lots to think about here!
    I am a college/university trained musician with tons of gigs on my resume. I’ve always wanted to write songs but I feel like my ideas are almost too personal, unrelatable, and sometimes to convoluted for an audience.
    I get inside my own head and I feel like any chord progression or melody I write sounds too much like one of the many other artists I’m influenced by. When it gets to that point, I tend to give up on the idea/song all together.
    Thank you again for the inspiration here. It makes me want to keep trying and write songs without judgement.

    • @DrQuizzler
      @DrQuizzler 4 года назад

      I'm piggybacking on this comment of yours, because everything you've said about yourself applies to me too, except for the tons of gigs. (Does a $50 wedding gig in the early '80s count?) In a world where it seems like everybody can write a potential hit song, I always get an insurmountable case of blank-canvas syndrome whenever I even THINK about trying to write one, so I just sort of live vicariously through people who can do it. {shrug}

    Really really great stuff Mary, and not just for songwriters or singers. I love the way you said something I've heard repeatedly about discomfort or not liking something - "Come to terms with it". I can't put my finger on why, but that just sounds much more doable than "accept it", "live with it" or "that's how it is". I find myself in the unique position to be given subject matter to write to. It's a bit like writing to picture for OST composers. If I run out of ideas, I pick a subject I don't know anything about and try and look into it. Then I imagine what it would be like for me. Then I pick a style and absorb all the examples I can find. A long walk or two with those 'inspirations' and then into my work space to see what happens. My other ethos is to keep writing; anything. Most songs are scrapped, but ideas and sequences can lead to bigger and better results. Great video. Looking forward to this series.

    Thank you Mary, thank you. You've been putting out amazing content lately, songs, videos, all. Looking forward for the rest of this series, and this video really helped me rethink my approach to songwriting.

    At the risk of sounding clichéd, this really resonates with me. As a somewhat perfectionist, it is far too easy to put off finishing any project, and not just in creating music.
    Well, except for maybe doing the dishes, but still.
    "Being a perfectionist is another excuse for not finishing". A transcendent life lesson.
    Our daughter was the design editor of her university's student newspaper, and she had three or four graphic artists working for her. She learned to compromise on her perfectionism due to daily deadlines involved in getting a newspaper printed on time. When her artists wanted to spend more time perfecting their work, she, knowing the press deadlines were imminent, would look at them and repeat, "Good enough! Good enough!" to emphasize that getting finished (on time, in their situation) was more important than perfection.
    There is always gratification in completion, even if it isn't perfect.
    Thanks for the inspiration, Mary!
