Clarence Weatherspoon: He had to REPLACE CHARLES BARKLEY… But did he get a Fair Shot? | FPP

- He was one of the greatest players in Metro Conference History, his four year NCAA career at Southern Miss saw the undersized forward dominate his competition by outmuscling and outhustling them. Clarence Weatherspoon was drew a lot of comparisons to the great Charles Barkley, due to their similar stature and play style; so it seemed like fate, but also high pressure when the Philadelphia 76ers drafted Weatherspoon just days after they traded Barkley to the Phoenix Suns. Weatherspoon’s time in Philly was spent on some very bad teams, but in the beginning he was their lone bright spot as they went through a full rebuild. Unfortunately, Weatherspoon went through coaching change after coaching and would be played more at small forward even though he was most effective at power forward. Once the Sixers got guys like Jerry Stackhouse and Allen Iverson, Weatherspoon’s usage saw a big drop, and for the next decade he would be an NBA Journeyman. He had some team success with the Miami Heat and one more good year with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but overall, he would never get close to putting up the numbers he did during his first few years in Philly. He was a reliable rebounder and defender, and could give you points if he got opportunities. His decline hit hard later in his career as his weight became an issue and his great athleticism disappeared. But throughout his career “Spoon” was a reliable inside presence, and never complained about his role on the team. He look like an average player, but the expectations for the man nicknamed “Baby Barkley” were high coming into the league, especially with the situation he was placed in, yet as soon as he was playing his best, it seems he was given up on…

9:32 Shawn Bradley isn't dead.
Damn you're right, I was thinking of his recent paralysis
Yea.. I was going to second that.
@@ForgottenPlayerProfilesmark Eaton had an eerily similar incident and he died, possibly confused the two.
@@ForgottenPlayerProfilesprobably thinking of Eaton as well
I was thinkin the same lol
Woooow, seen the draft board and saw Todd Day! Taking me back
I'll always have good memories of playing Weatherspoon and Bradley on those old NBA Jam 92 arcade machines
Spoon was a true pro, certainly in the realm of Barkley in terms of natural rebounding instinct.
One of my favourite underrated players
Wow this man was a true solid NBA player, for him to last through all of those eras was quite an accomplishment
Great work as always, Weatherspoon is definitely one of the forgotten favorites from the '90s. Perhaps add Lamond Murray and Chris Gatling to a list for the future. +
Murray was overlooked especially from that draft class he was in featuring guys at the same position like G. Hill, Jaylen Rose and Glen Robinson. Donyell Marshall was also in that group of small forwards/point forwards that should get a video like Murray hopefully gets as well
He was never in any drama either. My homeboy forever! You explain to him what system of play that you need from him and he would deliver. Yep my homie!
I forgot about Weatherspoon I remember watching him in College he was a beast .
If you had to play him twice a year you'd remember! I bet this dude averaged 35 vs Louisville in the old Metro days! Baaaaad boy!
If I were to make a request, I'd like to see you do an episode on Charlie Ward for what he did in football(college) and basketball. Playing in the NBA after winning the Heisman Trophy.
Yeah let’s put a football video up and put basketball durrrrrrr
Great topic- 4got he was such a baller
AK-47 is one of the most underrated defenders of the 2000s should’ve won a dpoy but never got his recognition
Clarence Weatherspoon was actually good during his Philly days.
Good lord--you KEEP doing great profiles!! 😆
Great work..
(Bradley is alive, just crippled.)
Glad you highlighted Weatherspoon.
Such a good player who’d be even better today. Barkley/Marion hybrid.
Spoon had some pretty cool kicks back in da day and had a nice double pump dunk as Shaq just stared at him form the other side of the paint.
If I could offer a request, I'd like if you covered the career of Corliss Williamson. The other baby Barkley much like Clarence Weatherspoon. NCAA champ, NBA champ and 6th Man of the Year
Corliss was much more of a Rasheed Wallace type than he was Charles Barkley
What?
Yes!
@biudlgglilwayne7050
Idk cw was a dog like Barkley
Closer to Larry Johnson after the back surgery. I used to hate playing guys like that in the post during pickup games, they’d pin you down by hooking their shooting elbow over you.
Maybe you confused Shawn Bradley with the recently deceased Eric Montross?
Wow I didn't even know he played that long in the league !!! I was a kid in middle school in the Philly area when he was drafted by the Sixers. I remember the Sixers tried to make him the face of the team for a few seasons before quickly moving away from him for Shawn Bradley, then Jerry Stackhouse, and then Allen Iverson. It's crazy because he wasn't that bad of a player, now to think about it. He just wasn't a superstar and a player a team could build around. He was a starting forward in the league but a role playing starter, not a star. It's crazy because this is exactly how the Sixers did Andre Iguodala, trying to make him a star, instead of a role player. But Iguodala got lucky and landed on the Warriors, and they knew how to play him. If Weatherspoon had gotten lucky like that, he definitely would've been remembered more.
Weatherspoon was an entertaining player to watch randomly pop off
I have a new found respect for him now I use to call him a bum
Pls. do

How insane is that the 1992 NBA draft had two babies? Baby Jordan (Harold Miner) and Baby Barkley (Clarence Weatherspoon)!
I truly feel he didn't get a fair shake in the NBA... He could have been a regular all star had he been used right and on a contender..
One of the best players to come out of Mississippi.
It’s crazy because the 601 is more known for football, but we have had some decent talent in the NBA.
I still want one of those throwback red 76ers jerseys
Do Dale Davis
Loved him at Southern Mississippi…
Dude had a long, productive career. Players like C-Spoon should be remembered.
I was a big Clarence Weatherspoon fan in the mid 90s
He’s always good on MyNBA
I remember the Flair ultra basketball cards ….he was paired with Barkley Pippen with Robert horry and those comparisons were actually on point ….that 92 draft produced some great players and all stars
Salute.. He use to live in my town when he played in Philly..Great player..
Tracy McGrady’s baseline dunk murked Sean Bradley 😅
A beast from wat i remember. Salute bro
Really liked him on that dumb, and really bad, Cavs team. Another banger of a video here, well done.
Should do one on Cartwright. Lol
Great player..he was a beast
He looks and plays like Zion
Dana barros gotta be next right?
Great episode!
He was good player in 90s
How about Andrew Toney next
How about Robert Pack? Or Jerry Stackhouse?
I'll get to Pack eventually. Already got a Stackhouse video though
this was a good one...great upload
Thank you 😊
Dude, Shawn Bradley is not dead. What the hell. Good video though 🤣🤣
HOF center and NBA Champion Alonzo Mourning was in this draft and one of your hi-lited players in that Draft was Tom Gugliotta? 🤣 Im just messing witcha fam I love your channel btw. You do some amazing work.💯
pretty sure S Bradley is alive. he is in a wheelchair, but very much alive.
Brian Grant
He always reminded me of clippers player who came out of Duke and never got credit for being a good player.
Elton Brand
Spoon had the misfortune of being on some horrible 76er teams. He was a good forward who was an exceptional shot blocker for his size. One of the best of the Barkley type players, undersized in terms of height, widebody power forwards between 6'5" and 6'7" with great low post scoring ability, great rebounders, some had hops similar to Barkley. Guys like Spoon, LJ, Corliss Williamson, LaPhonso Ellis, Gary Trent, Anthony Mason, a few others.
My guy Spoon! Glad to know him personally!!
Love your stuff. Could you do one on Clyde drexler?
Baby Barkley
Spoonman
The spoon 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Mcdess got hurt with knicks his leg i think same he had with Nuggets but then Stoudemire who got same injury with nuggets then knicks to staoudemire mycdess always reminded me of each other i was a fan and a knick fan to
Clarence Weatherspoon has been forgotten by the NBA. He was like the baby version of Charles Barkley who was undersized for a power forward. He was definitely a bust because they didn’t know how to use him properly
A poor man’s Barkley…. 😂
Sam Perkins
I was thinking bout him last week
weather goat 🐐
Baby Barkley 🏀🥄
Thats my homie spoon
Charles Smith next???..
What happened to that David Thompson video?
What do you mean?
Its the city look how they treat their teams , coaches Andy Reid did great fans screamed fire him they did another coach wins a superbowl he looses some they fire him this new coach 1 yr removed from the superbowl he was in trouble but the city turns on their plsyers Reggie White and do Mcnabb and Hunt will find out
Do Malik Rose?
Spoon was supposed to be the next Barkley in Philly but he didn't have the athleticism and strength of Charles
thus proving a
league of un
athletic plumbers
is total bs.
I remember him playing and most fans in Philadelphia looked at him as a cheap imitation of Charles Barkley.
I watched Spoon whole Sixers career, I feel he was definitely given a shot. He just wasn't that guy.
He was 🗑. just my opinion.
A bust…remember him on the knicks he was 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾
Lololol
😂😂😂
Seems to me he was just a guy who teams didn't know how to utilize properly
@@johndavis9321 Exactly
no disrespect but average sums up clarence weatherspoon and the 70 and 73 knicks weren't as elite as the 94 and 95 rockets and 67 sixers because star willis reed wasn't as elite as legends hakeem olajuwon and wilt chamberlain

Ey bro!?... Cool vid and all but your script content and delivery was VERY monotonous!!! I think it would've been better had u simply spoke freely about his career apposed to robotically and mechanically reading your script which had a structure that seem to go on and on... Just saying 🤷🏾♂️
