  • Oftentimes in the West, Muslim identity can be conflated with Arab or South Asian versions of the faith. The truth, as we all know, is that Muslims come from all over the world, and Islam has been in some regions of the world longer than you'd think. We speak to Mustafa Briggs about what it means to be a Muslim from West Africa, and how his experiences growing up with family and friends shaped his Muslim identity today.

Great back story on how Mustafa Briggs came into Islam. It reminds me of how Allah brought me into Islam through various people over time and, later, to the proper min'haj (proper path with the proper aqeedah/belief system) over time! I love both his research and refreshing perspective about the global culture - I have read a lot of the books he has read but he has been able to take it to the next level! And he is right - Black people (not just in Africa) tend to be more sincere and focused on their deen with sincerity than a lot of others - it is rare to see them compromise their Islam, get into rib'a, sell haram in their shops and stores or join Christians in their holidays and practices. His friend was right - there is no need for him to join any Sufi order to be Muslim (despite the fact that it was one of the ways Islam spread in West Africa) - just stick to the basics! As he came to understand early in his studies, the basis of Islam is that ALLAH IS ONE without a partner, The Creator SEPERATE FROM HIS CREATION. Therefore, the belief that you can BECOME ONE WITH ALLAH is contrary to this basic tenet of Islam.

SubhanAllah. This young man is way beyond his age in wisdom and ilm. May Allah continue blessing him and his work. His knowledge, his journey, his humility, his assertiveness of his black Muslimness in a rather non-belligerent manner points to Allah's noor shining on him. He is truly blessed. May brother Mustafa continue opening up and broadening the conversation around black Muslim identity from early Islam till today, and may it reach the highly insular Arab/desi communities who seem to have monopolised the deen. Am about to buy his book Beyond Bilal and going to read it together with Imam Dawud Walid's Centering Black Narrative and Dr Rudolph Ware's The Walking Qur'an to unlearn prejudices and learn the rich
As a brown man born and raised in a certain sub Saharan country where Muslims are a minority, this knowledge would go a long way in attracting even more locals to Islam, in addition to local Muslims proudy asserting their identity and pushing back in an intellectual way the dominance of a particular strain of cultural Islam, that only sadly divides communities.
May Allah unite us, and spread the light of his Kalimah throughout the continent.

    السلام عليكم
My brother. I’m strongly in agreement with you. Brother Yousef Kromah was the first person that I heard speak highly African scholars.
I live in Georgia (USA). The concerns are the same here. Many of our own (African-American) sisters and brothers, see Muslims from Arab speaking countries as “the real Muslims”. Likewise, some of immigrant Muslims look down on converts.
In our particular masjid, separation was the solution. Alhamdulilah!
ISA, I look forward to learning more from our African Imams, and scholars.
I’m sooo very grateful for our kindred souls, though distance has separated us.
May Allah continue to bless you with wisdom and good health.

Al tirmidhi 38 - Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Allah created Adam when He had to create him and He struck his right shoulder and there emitted from it white offspring as if they were white ants. He struck his left shoulder and there emitted from it the black offspring as if they were charcoal. He then said (to those who had been emitted) from the right (shoulder): For Paradise and I do not mind. Then He said to those (who had been emitted) from his left shoulder: They are for Hell and I do not mind.
