- A Hot Press production, Up Close and Personal is a series of live events and programmes in which artists talk about their own classic Irish albums. The first six broadcasts feature interviews and performances from Gemma Hayes (Night On My Side, 2002), Mary Coughlan (Tired and Emotional, 1985), Damien Dempsey (Seize The Day, 2003), Tim Wheeler of Ash (1977, 1996) Conor O’Brien of Villagers (Awayland, 2013) and Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny (Planxty, 1973).
The series is produced in association with Aidan Shortall of Up Close and Personal Promotions and supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. The public interviews took place at The Grand Social, Dublin in the winter of 2021. The first broadcast in the series features Gemma Hayes being interviewed by Hot Press writer Lucy O’Toole and performing four songs from the album...
• Gemma Hayes was born in 1977 and grew up in Ballyporeen, in Co.Tipperary, Ireland. She emerged during the singer-songwriter boom in Ireland at the turn of the Millennium, but always insisted on following a distinctive, singular path. Her debut album Night On My Side was released in 2002 on the Source Records label, a subsidiary of Virgin. The album was produced by Gemma herself, Dave Fridmann and David Odlum. It reached No. 8 in Ireland and No. 52 in the UK. Gemma won Best Female Artist at the Hot Press Awards 2002. The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize 2002, alongside David Bowie (Heathen), The Streets (Original Pirate Material), The Coral (The Coral), Doves (The Last Broadcast) and the eventual winner, Ms. Dynamite (A Little Deeper).

GREAT interview and fantastic that new music is coming. Setting the record straight (27:21) …the name of that poor chap who came in to have a cup of tea is Phil Broikos, and although I’ve never been a big fan of tea, I have been a big fan of the music forever. ‘Always make sure people like you’ that’s goes deep. I let a good thing go: guitars!!!! Drop. Is one of my all time favourite songs. I grabbed a promo cd from when I worked at Virgin Megastores.
I am 52 and have listened and loved music all my life. About a month ago, my 13-year-old daughter Irene asked me "Dad, if you were stranded on a desert isle, what playlist (insert joke here) would you take?" I thought about 30 seconds and said "Night on My Side" by Gemma Hayes. She had heard the name and some of the songs (from succeeding albums also) but did not fully understand my appreciation for that record. It led to a wonderful conversation about that album and Gemma Hayes. For Father's Day, she surprised me with a special framed poster of that album cover with the lyrics. There's not a week that goes by that I don't listen to some portion of that album. Thank you. That's what it means to me...

I adore Gemma Hayes. She's an incredible artist, but oh my God the lady that's interviewing her is terrible! She glazes over and genuinely looks so bored, I don't think she knows who Gemma is or likes her stuff. Get a better interviewer next time please!

I won a copy of Night On My Side years ago on a radio competition that FM104 were doing. I was only a teenager at the time and Gemma Hayes was totally new to me. I loved the album when I heard it and it was unlike anything else I was listening to at the time. I've been a big fan ever since and still love revisiting this amazing album regularly. ❤️

This has been an absolute joy to watch. I first saw Gemma in 2002 and have been a huge fan ever since. I just cannot wait to see her live again and hearing that there is a new album on the horizon is just the icing on the 2022 cake😊👍
