The Insane Sleep Schedule Tesla and Da Vinci Used to Boost Creativity

  • This daily routine and alternative sleep cycles that both Da Vinci and Tesla followed may surprise you.
    Have you ever wondered if the super geniuses of history had anything in common about their daily routines to help them boost their creativity, and help them become the genius we know them as today? It turns out there are a lot of shared creativity boosting exercises used by some of the greatest minds, however - some of them are more… sane than others.
    Leonardo Da Vinci and Nikola Tesla both shared the same insane polyphasic sleep schedule called the “uberman.” Where they would rarely sleep for more than 2 hours a day; they saw it as a way to increase productivity, fit more working hours into the day, and help become more creative.
    One of the mysterious ways they would boost their creative and inventive genius is through a state between sleeping and wakefulness called a hypnagogic state. If fact, some other prominent minds also attributed some of their creative genius to this state: Albert Einstein, Aristotle, Isaac Newton, Salvador Dali. Many of which had alternative sleep schedules. Could it have been in part what made them become a genius, on increased their creative energy levels? Or is this one life hack that could cause more harm than good?
    Maybe an easier first step to becoming a genius would be to check out our previous video on speed reading:

      @@renatolilliu8325 hello ! It took me about 4 months before my body accepted the pattern. I started off just cutting down on my sleep to 6 hours a night because I could not wake myself up in 20 minutes, nor fall asleep fast enough. So everyone is different, being I work 12 hour shifts it’s hard to squeeze in many naps, but my schedule is sleep at 22:00-02:00 hours. First rest period is at 06:00 2nd rest period is at 12:00 & last rest period is at 20:00 hours. The hardest thing is being able to keep this 100% consistent 7 days a week. Falling asleep within 1 minute is not easy for awhile.

    This is blowing my mind. I noticed that while I usually struggled with normal everyday activities, had little stamina, and just felt sorta "out of it" at all times, on day 2 or 3 of being awake (usually stress or chemically induced insomnia) the creative part of my brain would be firing on all cylinders. I'd just get a conscious stream of lyrics to songs I've never heard before, ideas for funny videos, and just the overwhelming impulse to create art. However, I also noticed that when I'm well rested, like 2-3 months of 8 hours a night, that part of my brain is practically shut down or in a weird hibernation state. The only way to stimulate it is through sleep deprivation, and it sucks because it conflicts with my idea of healthy (a full 8 hours of sleep every night, a healthy diet and plenty of exercise). But I can't maintain what my brain identifies as a healthy stream of creative consciousness and also live according to my standards of "healthy". Quite the dilemma.

      While these two may have been in this sleep pattern I can confidently state that it’s not the sleep pattern but more than likely the frequency that you’re in aka flow. Some articles have described that’s it’s a near transic and sleep pattern state yet very much up and alert. Given I have too many ideas sometimes I do just want it to shutoff. Sleep in my experience doesn’t have much affect to this

      I can confirm that the flow state is what really matters with creativity. I found out that insomnia, meditation, psichedelic drugs, prolonged focus on the same subject all induces the flow state. Flow state can also be entered trough simple intention, for example by remembering to enter It and pronouncing(mentally or loudly) the Word "flow".

    The trick with the key is actually an ancient non-tech method of getting to the fast-cycle sleep mode. Instead you could just use an alarm clock, setting it for a couple of minutes. This allows brief REM, while keeping you from actually sleeping. But once the Polyphasic turns on full blast, you don't need the key anymore, and you're trapped in insomnia, but periodically "hitting a wall" and having to briefly doze. (Yes, it takes about two days. But then if you want to return to normal sleeping, that takes a week or two!)
    Also, note that breakthrough ideas are not "ideas." They're more like when Samuel Taylor Coleridge was "getting" Zanadu. Suddenly you need to write stuff down, so you don't lose it again ...and you end up frantically writing for ten minutes, or thirty, or an entire hour. That's not insight, that's taking dictation. And, after writing for a hour, and the stream dries up ...a day later it turns on again, and you get the "next chapter." I've had this happen up to five times, with the periodic bursts decreasing.
    And of course you MUST write it down, or it will be gone again.
    Who knows how long that Zanadu poem would have become, had not Coleridge been interrupted by a knock on his door. Once he got rid of the person, Coleridge found that the rest of the poem was long gone. Not enough Opium, I guess.
    And, if you don't have a pencil and a napkin like JV Atanasoff, then you need a voice-recorder app for taking notes. (Atanasoff invented the modern computer, immediately having it stolen by Eckert and published as the Univac. Atanasoff suffered from insomnia, so he'd go out driving at 3AM, adding "night-drivers' trance" to the mix. Heh, also that's how the modern PCR dna-analyzer was invented by Mullis: night-driving trance state.)

    Liked the video, inspired to try this. I know you have the disclaimers in the video and no mention of a medical doctorate, but did you by any chance look into any of the negative side effects of this sleep schedule? Do you know how the body will react to daily vigorous exercise with this type of sleep schedule? Do you think intensity will be impacted or it will have enough time to recover?

    • @CommonKnowledge42
      @CommonKnowledge42  3 года назад +4

      I've read anecdotally that the adjustment period is pretty rough. But once your body adjusts to the new demands it improves dramatically.
      Daily exercise has always been my biggest concern as well. In my own opinion if had an off the cuff answer... I would say that it wouldn't be as bad for endurance and hypertrophy training (I've done both sleep deprived, and while it doesn't feel great, output personally was comparable to performance being well rested. It's just the effort perception that seemed to be affected for me)
      But for explosive training like powerlifting I have a feeling there could be some more noticeable negatives. I'd assume that the deep sleep required for CNS recovery would potentially have a more significant affect.
      Anyways, that's my gut feeling. Not necessarily "qualified" opinion. I'd be curious to if there have been studies done on it.

    • @ACE3CGL
      @ACE3CGL 3 года назад +3

      @@CommonKnowledge42 I'd love to have access to their notes to see exactly how they executed this. I'm a little hesitant to try it since sleep is more important than diet and exercise combined and doing it wrong could potentially really hurt your body & disrupt your life, but I think doing it for a week or two would be illuminating.
      If I had to guess, I'd agree with you about needing longer deep sleep for CNS recovery, but I'm not traditionally qualified either.
      I'm also curious to know if this was their normal daily sleep pattern or something they used during certain periods of time. I'm thinking of it like fasting where you can go quite a few days without a meal, definitely longer than most people think possible, but after awhile, you do need to eat.

    • @BassForever44
      @BassForever44 2 года назад +2

      I did it by accident while writing my phd thesis. To put it simply: it's not something I'd do on a regular basis, only at periods of the utmost necessity and distress. I lost 8 kilos in about 3 months. Also, for highly aerobic sports (amateur kickboxer at the time) it completely destroyed my conditioning. No amount of hydration and proper diet compensated for the lack of sleep.
      Bottomline: don't do it. Sleep science is a whole universe and shouldn't be taken lightly.

    • @Landon-_
      @Landon-_ 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@ACE3CGLthere’s a difference between fasting and sleep. During fasting your body is using nutrient stores it made to fuel itself, and when those run out it starts breaking down fats, then muscle. You also need to be careful not to be vitamin deficient during that period of time if any more than one day. Your body can’t really store extra sleep to take out when you’re tired, though. It is a 0% pleasant process. There's always the possibility of going mad too I suppose. But the line between extreme creativity and madness is often a very fine one.
      That being said, it's definitely worse in the beginning than it is once your body begins to adapt to the new sleep requirements being forced on the body. Most people say that the first two weeks are the worst, and then it begins to become easier.

People should go to basics ,and start thinking and knowing what they're consuming, as food and drinks, be healthy, use and push your body, have touch with nature.

But usally i can only sleeo 2 hrs at a time. Even aftet being awske for more than 24 hrs i still will only sleep 2 hours. I awake totaly refreshed n ready to go. Recently ive been napping sometimes twice a day ( i study alot) because after studying n thinking i get a wave of exhaustion n i litterly have to sit or lie down. Ive been doing the 2 hours sleep sch all my life. Im high energy n am very productive the sleep study i read said ur body gets most of its recharge the first 2 to 3 hrs of sleep anyway so idk. Im 57 n this is the only way ive ever been

      Wow I've found someone else who sleeps in 2 hour cycles! I'm on the same sleep cycle as you and same as you it doesn't matter how long I stay awake or how tired I am, it's something that is a part of my life everyday. I was worried about it because I developed this 2-3 years ago but knowing that you also have it gives me some comfort. I sleep for 2 hours then do something for an hour or so then sleep again for 2 hours then do something for an hour then sleep again for 2 hours and so forth. I think I usually sleep 6hrs this way but sometimes it's 8 and other times 4 and other times 2. I also am fully awake/refreshed after the 2 hr sleep.

      @@ScaryClown338 yea everyone was always tellin me how bad it is like doctors n.ya kno all the experts in.my life. So I talked to a lot of differant type doctors untill I found the sleep study that answered this questain for me. Not everyone needs 8 hours of sleep n the study talked about this short cycling like what u n I seem to have. It dosnt matter I do I cant sleep for more than 2 or 2 1/2 hours, even w medication that they wd want me to use! So the it seems gets 90% of its recharge in the first 3 hours. Let me ask u, do u dream ? Because it didnt seem that I did for along time. But now like u after waking up.i started awhile back going back to bed n sleeping for another 2 hours n I'll do that now 2 or 3 times a nite so now I am getting maybe 6 hours and I've started dreaming. I did learn in that study that during sleep this is where ur brain takes stuff that u learn that day n transfers it to long term memory. So if ur studying ALOT like I tend to do
      ( I'm old but kinda reeducating myself) it's easier to retain information if u try n sleep. For healing they said too. This is wear the body heals itself. So yes there are ppl like us that dont need so much sleep but I do now realize that it's better if I push myself to sleep more for my body to heal n get maximum results from studying

    Work again from 4pm-8pm.
    And I skip all traffic and lines anywhere in public if I do go out.
    By 10am every day I’ve accomplished an entire day’s work.
    The evening work is like an entire second day.
    And it leaves time for a full sleep at night plus a daytime nap.
    In my opinion it’s the best sleep rhythm.
    Smart people defy social norms. I find waking up at 7am, spending time in traffic, working 9-5 in one long stint, then more traffic, to be the most exhausting routine of them all.

    Embarrasing(but proud) moment during this video:
    You put up faces of Leonardo DaVinci and Tesla. Then crossed them out and put in their places, Elon Musk and Leonardo Dicaprio.
    As you did this you were speaking of how these were geniuses who used the uberman sleep schedule.
    Im a HUGE fan of Da Vinci, Tesla, and Dicaprio. In Musks early days I was a HUGE Musk supporter.
    Anyways, Long story long, Da Vinci, and Tesla obviosly earned their spots.
    When I saw Dicaprio my brain said "WOAH, even The genius actor Leonardo Dicaprio uses this to be the best in his field."
    Then I saw musk and was like "something doesnt seem right here."
    "OOOOH...Dicaprio was a joke for Da Vinci, and Musk was a joke for Tesla."
    Anyways, its embarrasing because I totally missed the joke.
    But im proud because Leonardo Dicaprio is as amazing in his field as Tesla, and Da vinci were in their respective field's to me.
    So he deserves to be there.
    You can put Musk next to Edison....and Trump. 😂

      @@CommonKnowledge42 Better late than never!
      I enjoyed it quite a bit. Especially catching it was a joke late. Lol.
      Just as a new fan: I'm super interested in all of these classic scientists, and I know they all looked up to and respected each other for their scientific work specifically.
      But do you happen to know, or want to make a video maybe looking deeper into see if there's any documentation about how einstein truly felt about newton, and things like his Alchemy, or if he had thoughts on the whole Tesla, Edison debacle.
      I've always wanted to be a strong believer in Tesla, but it's almost like a religion as we don't have a ton of proof of his true genius that captivates us all.
      It's always bugged me that he and Einstein lived during the same time period but Einstein didn't seem interested in the things Tesla was doing.
      If anyone was a good enough man and intelligent enough to solve these mysteries that Tesla claimed about energy in the atmosphere, etc. and do it for the good of the world. Yet we never hear about Einsteins input on this.
      Also Stephen Hawkings opinions of past scientists if he ever spoke of it.
      Anyways, just a video I was looking for and couldn't exactly find. Haha

      @mohdehtesham8357 11 месяцев назад

      @@Chadillac-xq7xk Hey there, fellow science enthusiast! I've read some interesting anecdotes, but I might not be able to reference the sources. Did you know that Einstein was a big follower of Newton? He idolized Newton not just for his genius but also for the fact that he made theories and proved them to demonstrate the primary subject of his hypothesis. Einstein was also a humble person, so he credited his work to Newton, saying that all he has done is stood on the shoulders of giants. (Sources: Nat Geo's Genius series about Einstein, Walter Isaacson's book on Einstein, The World as I See It by A. Einstein)
      Just a quick fact check: Einstein was born in 1879, while Tesla was born in 1856, making Einstein 23 years younger than Tesla. So, Einstein wasn't really born during the prime years of Tesla and wouldn't have been able to comment on the rivalries between Edison and Tesla. During the prime years of Einstein (when he was in his 20s), Tesla was already in his 50s, and during Einstein's annus mirabilis, Tesla commented on the Theory of Relativity as a work of fiction and far from reality. Not to resent Tesla, he was more of an inventor than a theoretical physicist, and the renowned physicists of the time were also not accepting of it. By the way, Einstein was once asked about the smartest person alive on Earth, and he said the reporters should ask this question to Tesla, nodding to the fact that he thought highly of him.
