If they raise their crest up really quickly and draw their feathers in close making them look "skinny," it means they're afraid. And if they raise their crest slowly and not quite all the way up, it usually means theyre excited or something caught their interest.

A lot of animals with fur or feathers can extend them outward to give them a bigger and more threatening appearance. Dogs and cats are known to do this with their fur when threatened.
