Veteran Headstones Dirty in Pennsylvania

  • Veteran headstones are dirty in Pennsylvania and in desperate need of volunteers to properly clean them. Just outside Gettysburg, Trae Zipperer randomly visited Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Cemetery to raise awareness about the condition of veteran headstones in the State of Pennsylvania. No different than every other state, the veteran headstones in PA are covered in nasty black algae, lichens, other biological growth, and just plain old built up grime. Dirty headstones here issued by the National Cemetery Administration mark the graves of military heroes from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, World War II, Korea, and other time periods. The Daughters of the American Revolution, or DAR, has installed a monument honoring more than 25 Patriot Soldiers buried in these hallowed grounds.
    There is good news to report. Every veteran grave had a decorative war period flag holder and grave flag proudly displayed. It was wonderful to be made immediately aware of the presence of veteran graves as defined by the red, white, and blue Star Spangled Banners standing tall next to various headstones dispersed throughout the cemetery. Someone, or a group, maybe the DAR, in the Gettysburg area is obviously showing their respect for those who served by displaying flags in special flag holders. It should be an easy next step to properly clean these veteran headstones and grave markers.
    Watch our videos and read the protocol issued by the National Cemetery Administration to learn how to properly clean government-furnished marble and granite veteran headstones and grave markers. The protocol can be found at a hotlink in the About page at ByMemorialDay.com or Cem.VA.gov.

    Thank you Trae for all that you are doing! Not just the cleaning of the headstone’s, but for starting this movement and getting the younger generation involved in this. Me and my wife have been watching your videos and both think what you are doing is very moving and a great way to show respect to all those brave hero’s that gave there life to make sure we remain a free country. We live about 12 miles north of Boston in Lynn, MA. Here in Lynn we have a beautiful cemetery named Pine Grove cemetery. It’s wall, according to Ripley's Believe It or Not is the “second-longest continuous stone wall in the world,” second only to the Great Wall of China. We were wondering if you were planning on coming to Massachusetts at all? If you ever do, we would love to meet you there. Also we would like to start doing this on our own. Thank you again for all you are doing to pay this much needed respect and bring awareness to these heroes graves, it’s very much appreciated.

      Hi Ricky. I do plan on visiting the Boston area, but I'm not sure when that will happen. I spent a couple of years at Harvard Business School and my earliest known ancestor to arrive in America was at Cambridge in 1631. I have yet to be discovered family members buried all around Boston, each with an incredible story to learn I'm sure. Thank you for taking up this call to action in your local cemeteries. People like you are how we're going to get this done, one veteran headstone at a time. Please Register as a Volunteer at VeteranGraves.com so I can keep you posted going forward.

      I'm not sure how many patriotic people have actually cleaned a veteran headstone after watching my videos, but with more than 3.5 million views, and comments made here, I think the number of Volunteers is significant and growing. I hope you will join us and help us spread the word.

      Thank you Bernadette! If you spread the word in your local community, volunteers will show up to help you clean all the veteran headstones by Memorial Day.

    I also clean stones. Not just veterans. We need 1,000's more volunteers such as us.

      Amen. I focus on government-furnished veteran headstones and grave markers, because they are not private property. They remain federal property, and therefore are immune to the cemetery excuse about not being able to touch private property. I believe that once a Volunteer cleans the veteran headstones in a cemetery, the probability of the cemetery allowing the cleaning of private stones will increase. The cavalry is coming. My videos have been watched more than 3.5 million times now, so volunteers like us are being made aware each and every day. Eventually, we will reach enough Volunteers to clean every veteran headstone by Memorial Day, every Memorial Day, in perpetuity.

    Love this idea! Thank you so much for starting it. I plan on doing this as soon as the weather here in upstate NY gets warm enough. :)

      Thank you for helping Wendy! We just need one patriotic person like yourself to get started in each town. If that person spreads the word locally, volunteers will help. I'm just sounding the alarm to raise awareness in hopes that someone in each town will hear, and take action.

      I love this idea. My daughter and I already go around for “find a grave” to take photos and have been talking about wanting to clean gravestones but didn’t really know how to get started. This has helped a lot so thank you very much! 🇺🇸😉

    2:40 Mr. Zipperer you said that if we find a headstone that has exceeded its lifespan, we can order new headstones from V.A.? Does it have to be a cemetery staff person to do that?

    • @honoryourdna8897
      @honoryourdna8897  Год назад +1

      Google veteran headstone application and you'll find VA Form 40-1330. Read the document word for word and you will know exactly who can order a replacement headstone for a specific veteran depending on the time period in which the veteran served.

    What is the protocol for raising and leveling headstones?

      I reached out to the National Cemetery Administration last month to request they create a protocol for setting government-furnished veteran headstones and grave markers. I have not yet received an update, but I'm in communications with the same person who delivered the first ever cleaning protocol for me last year, so I'm confident they will follow through. Veteran headstones are produced, then crated, then shipped to the monument company or cemetery where the stone will be set. Currently, the stone arrives with no set of instructions regarding how to properly set the monument, nor how to care for the headstone or grave marker after it is properly set. I envision a day in the near future when every veteran headstone arrives with a set of instructions!

      @@honoryourdna8897 Thanks, I would be interested in a protocol for this as well! Glad to hear you've discussed this subject with them.
