Plácido Domingo sings the title character’s aria from “Gianni Schicchi” in the final dress rehearsal. Production: Jack O’Brien. Conductor: Bertrand de Billy. 2018-19 season.
Hey @Met, way to go. The extremely beautiful and fruitful partnership you have had with Maestro Domingo over 50 years and counting is a testament to the commitment both of you have to excellence, beauty, joie de vivre, vissi d'arte and wanting to share with the rest of us a few hours of respite from the vagaries and vicissitudes of life. When Placido is on stage, making magic, we all forget our troubles and there is no better gift that could be given us. Thank you. Truly. Paz y salud.
He has been criticised the last few years...but really at 77...78 in January this is impressive...his physical energy and characterisation undiminished!!
I love Domingo, and he still sounds great--he' s just not a baritone. In baritone parts like this one, I miss the true baritone sound and resonance.. He sounds like a romantic tenor in a kind of buffo part, and this sacrifices some of the comedic essence of the role. But he's the Maestro, and it's a joy to still hear him sing, I guess, because there's still a voice there and all that prodigious experience behind him
Unfortunately, there comes a time when the party is over, the lights are turned off, the food is put away, and the guests know that it is time to go home.
@Dcossi1 Yeah, this does look like a new production and for me, that's a good thing. I'm not a Woody Allen fan but I am a huge Domingo fan. He's a living legend with good reason. The way he invigorates on stage never fails to amaze. Paz y salud.
@@uppityglivestockian I thought I read that the woody Allen production was going to be used , as Domingo had worked with him at LA opera, but maybe I am wrong. This production has been used before . Tried listening on met radio last night .
@@dcossi1 That's right, the Woody Allen production has been around a while now, I think, and I've seen some rehearsal footage of it around here with Thomas Allen as Schicci. So this production is not new after all? No matter, it looks interesting all the same. Domingo isn't an over-achiever. He's a super-achiever. Amazing.
I love Domingo as a tenor - one of the greats, perhaps the greatest - but he is not a baritone. I am looking forward to the ROH's broadcast of La traviata on Tuesday, but I am not looking forward to seeing him as Germont. Quinn Kelsey in the Met's broadcast was perfect.

An amazing Plácido Domingo, who is going to be 78 years.
78. lol

I think whats even more impressive is his real age. But yes I agree. it is incredible.
Bravo Domingo. A true inspiration! 🙂
Damn amazing!! Love Plácido!!
I can't wait for tonight!

He sounds like a tenor lol. But anyway, Superb acting!

Giant Placido !!!
👏👏👏
This is a lack of respect to Mtro Puccini, who do you think you are to change the voice type for the role? I don't think the composer would agree
Wish I could see this. (NB: The title is wrong, “era eguale la voce” is later on in the opera.)
I thought this Schicchi was going to be the Woody Allen production
