Excellent lesson for the beginne slide player! As a guitar instructor myself, I often surf youtube to pick the brain of other instructors for curriculum ideas for my beginner and intermediate students and I'm never dissapointed. I've been playing for almost 30 years and teaching for more than 25 and love sharing ideas with other players and teachers. It's very rewarding. To some this may seem like a very simple lesson with very little flash, but Tom really focusses on some Continued...

Slide guitar is a very distinctive style and well worth putting in the work it takes to make it sound bad ass. I love the build up to this lesson, one important technique at a time. Great job Tom! ;)

I've just discovered this bloke. I've often shied away from RUclips demonstrators who just want to show how brilliant they are. This bloke cuts the BS & even allows his little human errors to remain with let's try that again, etc.

Hi Tom, I bought your DVD (bottleneck slide for beginners), and it's all OK, except for one thing : there are no lyrics on the PDF file for the song "sitting down in heaven" you taught from Rev. Robert Witkins, and I don't succeed in finding them on the Internet. Where could I get them, please ? (I'm French and can't understand by hear when you sing).
    Thanks a lot.

Great video! Is it usually more common to use higher action when playing slide (set up your strings so that they are sitting higher on the fretboard, so to speak) ?

No, you're thinking Dobro playing. In the way of the video you're using a slide but can still fret chords and notes.

Bottleneck slide for beginners response continued...
key points with slide guitar. Intonation being one of the most important I think, if you want to get that nice round bluesy slide sound without buzzing strings. He breaks it down nice n easy using 3 little notes which may appear simple, but if you can't keep those notes in line with proper placement of the slide, what you'll hear instead is something that resembles a train wreck to the listener.
