    Happy Oiltober!
I wondered how you deal with the fumes of oil mediums? I don't paint in the winter because I can't leave the window open for hours and I never store my drying paintings in my bedroom bc it makes me dizzy >•

Happy oiltober!! For me it's been a process of finding low odor mediums and using the bare minimum - I put a tiny dollop of liquid in a shot glass whilst I'm painting and only use thinner for cleaning at the end. But yes being able too keep painting away from my bedroom has been a huge advantage (my studio is actually a dining space next to the kitchen in our share house)

Wow! Quick question... I absolutely love how vibrant your colors are. I can usually get vibrant colors like that with watercolors, because I don’t use white to lighten the values, but I’m struggling with my acrylic portraits becoming pale and unsaturated. I was wondering if you know if oil paints are better, or the medium doesn’t matter and it’s more about the color mixing techniques. Thank you for taking the time to reply, and I absolutely love your art and your a huge inspiration!

Two main suggestions spring to mind, 1. Make sure to use a 'mixing' white when lightening colours a little, and titanium white when aiming for opaque shifts. Titanium white is powerful so it can easily overwhelm the intensity of your colour. Mixing white is more transparent and will be much gentler on the mix. 2. Have you tried painting with a gloss medium? It can't assist in colours staying intense and deep as you paint ❤️

Liz Gridley - Artist Liz Gridley - Artist Thank you! 🖤 I decided to do some of my own research after I commented, and using gloss medium was recommended. As for the mixing white, that is something that I didn’t find useful with gouache, so I completely disregarded the info when I switched to acrylics. I guess I’ll have to make a trip to the art store soon!

Again not a nessecity but just an idea that might help with the intensity of colour in particular ❤️ another work around can be using light colours that aren't white to lighten your tones (light yellow, pink or cerulean) - it can be a challenge but helped too teach me not to be too dependant on white!

Liz Gridley - Artist Huh, that’s not something I’ve thought about before... I usually use napthol red, ultramarine and hansa yellow. I’ll definitely have to look into mixing white and lighter primaries. I really can’t stand the chalky look that I’ve been getting with my acrylics!

@@graceelizabeth6863 Naples yellow is definetly one I love for skin tones!
