    As this movie avoids traditional horror tropes…I always considered it a drama about the mystery of faith. It’s Karras’ story more than anybody. It is the scariest film of all time…period.

      To me it’s more about evil’s relationship to humans, and humans’ relationship with evil. Why can some people commit evil acts with ease, while others can’t even fathom it? It doesn’t answer the question; rather it deepens the mystery- and thus the touch of psychiatry.

    I think this story is really about two people, Karras and Chris. They are from opposite ends of society, but both are unable to help those they love the most. Karras unable to financially care for his mother, and Chris facing a spiritual crisis that none of her wealth can solve. Feeling he failed his mother, Karras matches Chris's unbreakable courage to save Regan from unspeakable horror. In the end it's a story of love, sacrifice, and restored faith.

    Pazuzu could be a representation of Reagan’s sexual abuse and the resulting PTSD. The demon’s taunting remarks about her mother’s *sucking cox*, not to mention the crucifix scene, potentially allude to the torment. Burke Dennings, Chris’ colleague, seems as though he’s got ulterior motives for Chris and/or Reagan. The girl’s begging her mother to “make it stop” could very well be a plea to recognize some form of abuse that either her absent father or Dennings may have inflicted. Chris, of course, is too wrapped up in her career to pay full attention to her daughter and acknowledge her concerns as legitimate

The beginning of the movie shows that and when father Karras is listening to the recording. The demon/s are saying how they want the priest Marin.. and at the end the demon got what it wanted, the death of Father Marin. Father Karras beats the demon and saves the teenage girl..

Saw it as a kid on a rented VHS tape and purchased it when it received a DVD release but not sure if I ever watched that or not. Jason Miller was amazing in this movie, and I agree that his character was the center of the narrative. From his acting skills, to the striking contours of his face, Miller was captivating and convincing. I have done a lot of research on this movie, and found it fascinating that Friedkin (brilliant, but undeniably an egomaniac) did the extended version in part out his respect for Blatty and a desire to placate Blatty's dissatisfaction with some aspects of the original. Anyway, great video. Hope you don't mind a little plug, but my band Rosetta West tries to sublimate some aspects of this topic in our music. Thanks.

    I think there is without a doubt an understory of sexual abuse. There's no real explanation or reason for why Burke Dennings (a pretty shady character) to be in Regan's room before he got thrown out the window. If you look at the movie from this angle... the violence and sexual outbursts, the scarring and darkness taking over the child and her innocence. The self-infliction.... makes a lot of sense the possession is also an analogy.

    • @thedys70
      @thedys70 11 месяцев назад

      Yes that is the question we are asking years later: Burke Dennings' motives for what we don't see, and only find out in the aftermath.
      Were these scenes ever filmed, can any Exorcist tragics out there tell us either way?

      In the opening Iraq prologue, when Father Merrin discovers the Pazuzu head medallion, he is seen discussing it with a colleague, and the phrase used is "Evil against evil." In Pazuzu mythology, it is said that Pazuzu is so evil of a spirit that other evil spirits are terrified of him, and that wearing that medallion, while indeed evil, is meant to repel lesser evil spirits to do harm against the one wearing it. Think of it sort of like a "fight fire with fire" sort of idea.
      I bring this up because since the film all but confirms that Regan is possessed by Pazuzu, one fan theory I have heard is that when Regan plays with the Ouija Board and meets "Captain Howdy" as she calls him, she may have let slip that Burke Dennings was possibly abusing her in the sexual sense, and that maybe she invited Pazuzu in to help with that. So on the night when Burke died, he may have tried to have his way with Regan, not realizing she had a new "friend" and got tossed out the window and down the stairs to his death. However, the trade-off was that Pazuzu didn't plan on leaving Regan after he "protected" her.
      One of my favorite film analysts, Rob Ager, actually did a video about this theory. Search Rob Ager The Exorcist in the RUclips search bar and find the video entitled The Dark Underbelly of The Exorcist and you will find it. He ultimately doesn't believe the theory himself, but does find it a fascinating subtext to explore.

    To me, it’s always been about the Generation Gap and how the nuclear Western family was falling apart in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Regan’s dad is MIA and her mom is too busy with her career. Children left alone will fill the void with other things, which can lead them down a dark path. Beyond the religious connotations, I think this is why the film hit so hard in 1973. Parents at the time felt like they were losing connection with their kids, as the world was rapidly changing.

    We cannot live without the presence of God and evil

    As C.S. Lewis observed, one of the greatest evidences FOR God's existence is the existence of objective evil. How can anyone be capable of objectively stating that something is evil or wrong unless they first know what is absolutely good and righteous? If there is no moral absolute or righteous lawgiver, then we have no basis to claim something is wrong or evil. The best we can say is that we don't like it. It's not our PREFERENCE. But to call something UNJUST, is to admit there is objective JUSTICE that exists outside of our personal opinion or societal norms. It transcends everything and everyone. Where does it come from? This is the question every unbeliever has to face. The Exorcist was a sincere attempt at trying to wrestle through these issues. That's why it endures.
