1) The posture of the boom-op is questionable, does the boom pole need to be extended that much? The boom-op is holding the middle of the boom pole, handling noise could happen easier this way. And I wonder if it's a little too over-kill to use the blimp indoor? (Except it's very windy there?) A light foam windscreen would help if there's no big movement, and the boom-op doesn't need to support the weight of the boom, also the high frequency won't be eaten up that much comparing to using a blimp. 2) The lav mic on Moni - guess a "news loop" would help tidy up the cable and helps to block some cable noise.
Love what you are saying. I looked at the video again and I think you are right. I also think it’s not really necessary to extend the boom pole that much, but I guess she is trying to keep away from the subject to avoid being in the shot? I definitely agree with you that it’s a bit too over kill to use the blimp indoors, but I’ve also noticed that most of my clients seem to be impressed with “over kill” sets. ( lots of unnecessary lights, mics and even BIG cameras…) It’s sad really but it’s true… 2. Yeah, a new loop will make it look more tidy for sure. Honestly, I love this girls videos because she does answer a lot of questions and I can feel that she is trying to share her experience with the new generation of young or inexperienced filmmakers. As a soundie myself, I especially like how they acoustically treat their studio, it might not be the most glamorous at a glance, but it surely is effective in many ways! What I do specifically care about is the well being of the boom-op, also some safety issue. How long should the boom pole be extended really is related to how wide the wide shot is, there might even be chances that even the boom mic might not give enough reach, so it's always about the shot size. However, in this example, what I wanna point out is that the boom pole need not be extended for that long "at the back", this might trip some human or C-stands on set, which might actually become some potential danger for the boom op and others. Talking about the blimp itself, not only the boom op need to support that extra weight over a period of time which causes sore arms and shoulders (even if there's practically no wind in the room I suppose), due to the bulkiness of the blimp, it's might also induce a greater chance to cast shadow on the talent. If the boom op need to move with the talent, for most indoor situation, I believe a furry windscreen would get the job done nicely, if the shot is basically static, even a form windscreen would do. To "look more professional"? Or to "sound nicer" without sacrificing mid-hi where the human voice's articulation lives? It's your call, of course! Just remember that post production can enhance good recordings, but it doesn't save damage every single time. You are the professional, and I bet client would appreciate if we do it in a truly professional manner as well! Cheers mate! ;)

Indeed the boom mic was extended quite long in the shots shown in this video. We were going for a really wide shot, given the fact the location looked incredible and complimented the subjects quite nicely. Thanks for your suggestions, we’ll definitely try out another way to attach the lav mic. Maybe even try sticking the mic on the subjects piece of clothing to eliminate the outstanding cable.
