      @@cryoice6511 Nope. That's a house rule Critical Role uses though, so maybe you've got that idea from there? It's not an "actual" D&D rule though.
      You can cast as many spells as you've got actions.
      If we're going with my example, I would use my action in round 1 to set up my Spirit Guardians (it uses a full action and is a Concentration spell), and then, in the next round, I would use my _bonus action_ - since that is all this spell needs - to summon (and attack with) my Spiritual Weapon (which, surprisingly enough, isn't a Concentration spell, which means that it can be up at the same time as the Spirit Guardians). I then still have my full action left over, which I tend to use to attack with Toll the Dead - it's a Cantrip, but that's only because I don't want to use up that many spell slots in one go, not because I wouldn't be able to cast anything else. If I wanted to, I could cast any other 1-action spell in its place, no matter the level.
      And voilà, that's how I make a very effective three-spell-combo. You just need to know how to manage your action economy, and you're golden!

      As the rules are written, if you cast a spell as a bonus action, you are limited to cantrips for the remainder of your turn. So in your example, while casting Toll the Dead is fine, you couldn't then cast Guiding Bolt, for example.

    1:21 Honestly, this makes sense. If you're trying to draw a bow to shoot an enemy 5 feet away, they are more likely to notice and be able to react.
    Also, people can generally sprint 20 feet with a knife than aim and fire a gun, so a melee target within 5 feet would just stab an archer that close.

    Having disadvantage at 5 ft with ranged weaponry actually makes sense, as irl it would actuall be harder to shoot a person that close, and that is with a firearm, ranged weapons in DnD are bows and crossbows, which would be even worse at that close of a range.

    Duke, you really got me thinking on this one. My forte is 3.5E, so I prefer to stick with it and come up with house rules to make it more balanced. This scenario with the spellcaster really got me wondering about how to balance it when compared to 'sword and board' combat. Yes, high level spells go further, do more damage, affect a greater area, but again, spellcasters get only one...in a round (usually). Additionally, if they are in physical combat, they must make a concentration check or the spell fails. With all this in mind, I wanted to make it a little more balanced. What if we took into consideration the level of the spellcaster, and used half that number as the 'spell levels' a caster *could* cast in a round. Example: A fourth level caster could cast TWO magic missile spells in one round (all other rules still apply.....) again, an eighth level caster could cast FOUR magic missile spells. This would allow characters to have more of that WOW factor at higher levels, much like maxed out melee fighters do. This would have to be moderated by circumstances, etc by the GM.

    Here’s a homebrew I want to help with combat: any 1 spell that uses a weapon attack can be used with Extra Attack. So I can Conjure Barrage a bunch of enemies with my hand crossbow, and use my sword.
    Maybe fold it into the War Caster Feat.

    making a ranged attack at 5 feet makes total sense that it'd be at disadvantage, the guy you're trying to shoot is trying to cut your head off, kinda hard to focus on pulling back a bowstring when you're trying to avoid your wooden bow from being split by the guy's axe.

    I always saw the ranged rule as being because if you aim to shoot a bow at someone who’s right in front of you, there’s nothing stopping him from pushing the bow to the side to stop you from hitting him, meanwhile it’s not as easy to push a sword out of the way mid swing at your face.

  • @gogroxandurrac
    @gogroxandurrac 3 года назад

    1:22 it's based more on the fact that you don't want to block with your bow, as opposed to almost any other weapon, so you have to work harder to dodge the riposte. It's why I change it to within melee attacking distance of the creature rather than 5 ft. Some can attack at 10' or 15', so it doesn't make sense to only have disadvantage at 5'. This is where homebrew comes in, I add another action which is Leroy attack, by granting advantage to attackers and decreasing their crit requirement by 2 you can invalidate disadvantage and decreasing your crit requirement by 2, normally 17+. Useful only in melee range.
    I also let them cast lower level spells multiple times if they're using higher level slots (lv 1 cast twice with a lv 3 slot) by granting everyone advantage on attacking them.
    Lots of little tweaks to help the realism at the cost of balance.
