Love Angra. Good to see them get some love here on SoT. Obviously, George was the right co-Captain for this one.
You remember when I had Carolina IV on my list on the Favorite Epics show
"Angels Cry" is one of the best albums of that era. André, always in my heart. I miss him so much!
in memory of the dear Andre Matos 🇧🇷 in memoria del grande amico musicista Andre Matos.
Angra, has become a recent favorite band. Temple of Shadows really grabbed my attention
As a brazilian, I gotta say this was a very very interesting video. To see the opinions of 2 guys that understand so much about music and are outside brazilian bubble and fanbase, it showed us a very unbiased opinion. Here the Lione era is very criticized by some fans, because it doesnt sound like Angra, sounds more like an Angra cover (especially when he is sings live the songs from the other 2 singers), and I kinda agree with that, although I really like the 3 albums with him (I was happy Pete ranked Secret Garden 1st because it is incredible but many people here ignore this album). You tell a brazilian old fan of Angra Secret Garden is your favorite album, he will get mad at you, and I really dislike this hate on Lione's albums. Personally, Edu is my favorite out of the 3 eras (Mainly because Rebirth is my very veeery favorite album), he might not be as technical as the others, but his composition and writting skills are stunning, they say he can write music and melodies as easy as going to a bakery get a couple of breads 😅 and on his era we got Aquiles on drums (now on WASP), who is such a killer power metal drummer. Im gonna leave my ranking here, but as you said, this ranking changes every year, but the core is this I guess:
1. Rebirth
2. Angels Cry
3. Secret Garden
4. Temple of Shadows
5. Holy Land
6. Cycles of Pain
7. Ømni
8. Fireworks
9. Aurora Consurgens
10. Aqua
Thanks for the amazing video guys!!
RIP André Matos, our legend
So glad to see Angra in the channel! One of my all time favorite bands! 🤟
Andre Matos is so dearly missed. One of the best vocalists I have ever heard or seen. RIP Andre.
All the other guys, as the music, are simply top notch. Kiko already proved in Megadeth their level of musicianship. I had the chance to stretch the hands of these guys back in some autograph signings and concerts they did in South America.
For me, their best album will always be Angels Cry.
Temple of Shadows is also so impressive. Sick playing / musicianship.
Wow Pete is crazy for Angels Cry and Temple of Shadows being so low. It goes to show you how different people hear different things in music. The beauty of the channel IMO.
Angra and Sepultura. The two best Brazilian contribuitions to Heavy Metal music. Two amazing bands.
GEORGE/ busy guy this Friday- Saturday- Sunday. I’ll be there tomorrow ten am. Still spinning these 👍💯
Right! George working OT
@@ericporter344 / 👍💯absolutely
Thank you for this. I'm a big Angra fan and saw them on their last US run. Can't wait until they come back around.
George, my top 3 are the same as yours. Love Angra! So glad you guys did this ranking.
A man of discerning taste! :)
Holy Land is their magnum opus. One of the best metal albums of the 90s. I have seen Angra live with Matos back then and they were phenomenal. I also love Temple of Shadows , what an amazing album.
Great ranking!
Nice, glad to see Angra's great catalogue getting some love here! I was surprised to see Secret Garden ending on number 1 in Pete's list, but then, these guys do not really have a bad record.
Glad you finall id this band. Was a bit surprised but not that much. Personally, the reason I lke them is I consider them to be a full on prog metal band that sometimes revisits the fast majestic powe metal they started with. I like them doing the odd blazing power metal song but what I really like are the Brazilian influences, the interesting guitar sections, and even the unexpetedly tasteful poppy moments. The band just seems to really know what iit's doing. That sad I don't love the debut that much and the Edu era definitely seem to be my favourite. That's stretch of four really interesting and cool albums -- yes, even Aqua I think.
My top 10 is
10 - Aurora Consurgens
9 - Secret Garden
8 - Aqua
7 - ØMNI
6 - Rebirth
5 - Cycles of Pain
4 - Temple of Shadows
3 - Holy Land 🥉
2 - Angels Cry 🥈
1 - Fireworks 🥇
Nice to see a fellow Matos fan
Great video guys Greetings to you both from UK
This will be killer! That debut, Angels Cry, is one of #10 best Power Metal albums in my opinion. Severely underrated as well, Holy Land is excellent also. No bad albums I'd say
Curious to see his take on it too. Though I prefer the earlier Faladchi albums than the Andre Matos ones. Rebirth and Temple of Shadows are masterpieces imo
@@GabMacedoo I agree in some sense, I think Rebirth and Temple are masterpieces in the same sense as say, Destiny - Stratovarious or Symphony of the Enchanted Lands I - Rhapsody. Masterpieces in the big scheme of things, but not always the personal favorites.
Love this band
I've been looking forward to this as I'm not too familiar with their discography. The stuff I've heard from them as always been pretty solid.
Dig in, mate!
One of my favorite power metal bands, ranking them with George is appropriate.
First off my absolute top albums are
Holy land and Fireworks. Next comes Angels cry, so that covers the late Andre Matos period.
So, for seven that follow:
Rebirth, Temple of shadows, Secret garden, Aurora consurgens, Omni, Cycle of pain, Aqua.
I think that the latest one will rise in my top as time goes by.
Pete, we gotta do a Gamma Ray album ranking
The SOT crowd when Pete mentioned you on doing this / response was we are all IN. We will be there Rich. Enjoy day 👍💯
@garyjoyce2160 thanks. Love me some Gamma Ray!
Gamma ray has so many great albums, that would be a tough one
@@MetalAsylumNJAwesome band love Kai Hansen 🤘🤘🤘🤘💯💯
I discovered Angra through a customer, who had an album playing in his truck as we checked him in for the boat. There was a language barrier, but he handed me a home burned CD with Aurora Consurgens, Andre Matos' solo Time to be Free, and the Shaman album Immortal, all of which feature Andre Maots on vocals. He let me keep the disc, and I've been a fan ever since!
Matos isn't on Aurora Consurgens. That's Falaschi
@@georgelamie7001 Ah yes, that language barrier came into it's own then! Oh dear, thank you for that. However it did introduce me to Angra, so it didn't work out too bad!
My list:
1 Holy Land
2 Temple Of Shadows
3 Rebirth
4 Angels Cry
5 Cycles of Pain
6 Secret Garden
7 Omni
8 Fireworks
9 Aqua
10 Aurora Consurgens
I'm a power metal guy who struggles with progressive, but I've always loved Holy Land. It's so dreamy in parts and the "exotic" feel in some tracks is wonderful. I also really liked Rebirth, but after that I drifted away from the band (possibly because of Shaman.) Perhaps I should try to reconnect with Angra.
Was lucky to see Angra at Wacken Fabio on vocals amazing 💯🤘🤘🤘🤘
Secret Garden is also in my top 3 favourite Angra albums, together with Temple of Shadows and Holy Land. Rebirth would probably be number four
yeah, the great banging openers and weak wimpy closers are crazy with this band... anywho: 10. Aurora Consurgens 09. Aqua 08. Secret Garden 07. Holy Land 06. Cycles of Pain 05. Fireworks 04. Omni 03. Angels Cry 02. Rebirth 01. Temple of Shadows
Holy Land would be my top 1
1) Holy Land
2) Angels Cry
3) Fireworks
4) Temple of Shadows
5) Rebirth
6) Cycles of Pain
7) Omni
8) Secret Garden
9) Aurora Consurgens
10) Aqua
10000000% agree
Grand Funk Railroad ended For All the Girls in the World Beware with- Some kind of Wonderful!!!
I do hear some similarities to Blind Guardian, but Angra is much more varied. Need to listen to this band more, although I am honestly not much of a power metal guy. The progressive elements of Angra do interest me tho and I definitely see why their latest album was well received, solid. If I ranked them, Cycles of Pain would be as high as Pete if not higher. Getting views from Rich would be good, I agree with George.
Have you guys listened to Shaman's 2002 album "Ritual"? I personally think it's Andre's best vocal performance besides the three Angra albums as well as the 2003 live album they did, "RituaLive". Those two Shaman releases are outstanding!
As a Brazilian myself, I'm mostly surprised about Pete's ranking, but it's still really solid! I expected "Rebirth" to be ranked a lil' bit higher from both of you, but we don't really expect anything when it comes to SoT after all! LOL
I really like Ritual, and the dvd. Never cared for the follow-up, and never heard the ones without Andre.
@@georgelamie7001 Rescue, their last album (sadly), is actually really good. Has some great vocals from Alirio Netto, and the songs are quite memorable.
Hey guys. Holy Land is my #1, also in my top 25 Power Metal albums of all times. And Temple of Shadows #2.
Nailed it. 👊
@@georgelamie7001 thanks.
@georgelamie7001 and George, yes I like Angra, all three singers eras too. But, in my top 10 power metal bands, Angra are in the 11-20. I guess Helloween, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Stratovarius, Hammerfall, Grave Digger, Running Wild up to 2002ish, are more often mentioned. Also Primal Fear, Kahn era Kamelot, 80s Yngwie. Freedom Call.
@@MetalAsylumNJ Gotcha. We kinda figured you were more for trad. power metal vs. frills added type stuff. Angra and Galneryus are my favorites, then Khanelot and Helloween
Andre Matos was the best vocalist, but the Edu Falaschi phase was the best one in my opinion. The best albums, best lineup of musicians, Angra during the 2000s was a blast.
My personal ranking:
10 Aqua
09 Fireworks
08 Aurora Consurgens
07 Secret Garden
06 Omni
05 Cycles of Pain
04 Rebirth
03 Angels Cry
02 Holy Land
01 Temple of Shadows
Nice job, santino
George talks about edu struggling with higher notes but he doesn't mention that Lione has the same exact problem and it became apparent when Alessandro Conti who has far more range than Lione, sings all of the old rhapsody tunes with minimal effort. Go listen to any live performance of Conti singing Flames of Revenge or Warrior of Ice and compare them to Lione and its shocking how much more comfortable Conti is over Lione.
Lione nowadays doesn't sound good, his voice has that old woman bruce dickenson texture to it that i can't stand. It's a shame because Lione was pretty good earlier in his career and he was doing much better financially back then too before Turilli went insane. I don't know why the guys in Angra hired him when they could've gotten a younger singer with more range and I don't think the Lione choice worked out the way they wanted it to. Maybe they thought Lione's popularity with the south american fans was going to help but idk they were probably better off long term with an upstart singer nobody has heard of and that way they can mold that singer into the voice they wanted. Angra honestly feels like Liones retirement fund band and it wont be long until they have to find a new singer.
He did mention that Lione is pitchy and that's why Rafa does the ballads now. That requires singing and not hysterics, which is how Fabio comes off to me on the fast and heavy material
Holy land>>>>>>>>angels>>>>>>> rest
I loved the Matos’ voice and the traditional instrumentation made them stand out from the crowd. After that while they were good, it became generic power metal to me. They lost the things that made them unique so it was diminishing returns.
Absolutely brilliant show. Great to hear George and Pete dig deep on Angra, such a reliable and at times spectacular band. Interesting to see and hear the reasoning behind such different rankings as well. Loved it.
My rankings would be
1. Holy Land
2. Temple Of Shadows
3. Fireworks
4. Cycles Of Pain
5. Angel's Cry
6. Secret Garden
7. Aurora Consurgens
8. Rebirth
9. OMNI
10. Aqua
High praise from you. Cheers
