The commentating on that official stream is horrendous. They seem to only be there to give amusing anecdotes about previous races and various insights into the athletes minds. When they talk about the race they only talk about the athletes on screen, and on the screen there is never anyone lower than 10th place it seems like. They could be giving insights into how different athletes are moving up and down the field over the course of the 4 hours of cycling. But instead they just keep chatting about other stuff. Ridiculously poor quality.
not to mention the 3 minutes ads every 5 minutes... ironman broadcasts have always been bad but you'd think they would improve at some point, especially since PTO's broadcasts are a lot better

Wow wow wow! So happy for Patrick and also I am super happy that the German public broadcaster ZDF broadcasted the entire race without a brake and without (!) ads. Even better Sebastian Kienle was one of the co-commentators and Frodeno sometimes an expert. 🔥

Wurf and Marquedt are the highlights for me this kona. Wurf showing how to perform at age and Marquedt showing that you can be a med student and still compete at the highest level.
Wurf was very impressive especially as until 2018 this time would have meant winning the race. But overall Langes performance was just outstanding. Perfect pacing in the water and on the bike and then obliterating the field and the record on the run. 5min faster than Iden in 2022 😮. The crazy part is he could have run quite some faster the way he cruised through the marathon
I think the key lesson to take from this year’s Kona is that experience still matters in long distance triathlon and the old guard is not ready to give up to the young guns. Patrick demonstrated his race craft and experience to take the win from Sam, who implemented a very brave strategy that actually did succeed in dealing damage to many of the other pre-race favorites. I think Sam chose to race this way based on his own strengths, so I have to respect that from him. It’s hard to tell how much he overcooked the bike because your performance can drop off a cliff if you are even just barely over the limit. Still, he showed the heart of a champion and respect for the race by finishing as best he could. Overall, a really entertaining race. I don’t understand why people are dragging the commentary so much though. It’s a 7+ hour event and they are really just focused on the lead of the race. If you want them to have coverage all throughout, they would need to have more motos on course and I think we know how people feel about having more motos on the bike course.
I think you could argue that some basic lessons have been forgotten. Almost every single competitor blew up. If you performed a strong race according to the numbers you put out in training (accounting for heat), you could get a top result! nevermind the "new guard". Jan Frodeno seemed pretty pissed, i think he is positive he'd have won this one haha !!
Thanks for the recap, GTN! Ironman's race coverage was unwatchable for me, as the stream wouldn't work on my computer and I did not want to download the app and watch on my phone. And there isn't a race recap on the Ironman RUclips channel, so GTN was my source!
Its safe to say that Laidlows bike attack changed the race dynamics for most of the contenders. I wonder why he biked so hard? Maybe just caught up in the hype? Curious to hear what he has to say. And Lionel of course!
Sam rode hard 2 years ago and broke the bike record then. Ran well off the bike to finish 2nd behind Gustav. The chances are he could have done the same again, but every race is different. You have to admire the way he races.

I don't know if it's a South African cultural thing or not, but some cultures are more frankly honest than others and it's not meant to be insulting. And James didn't say anything that Gustav didn't say himself.
Lionel at 32nd place,thats 1 of 32 Best male triathlete s in the World,thats still pretty damn good! I'm happy he got this beast done and behind him. He has helped elevate this sport leaps and bounds over the years and that makes him a true Champion! Congrats to PL on the win and setting that record! Humans are getting FASTER!!!
Like every year the hype, buzz, expectations are over the top. And every year Im a little dissapointed! But thats my own doing, too high of expectations. Only two guys really ran well. Lange and Hanson.

I think they could benefit from rotating through a slightly larger team (like eurosport do for cycling). It's nothing against the commentators, but it's hard to constantly chat about new things for 8 hours, where with a bigger team and different combinations it might flow better. The bigger problem is the adverts on the stream so you miss action and can't hear about what's happening on the thumbnail you can see
There’s no way he ever recovered from throwing up. To have that happen only 2 hours in the race is awful. You’ve lost most of your glycogen stores and hydration and have 6 hours to go.
Gonna guess you haven’t seen any of the clips of KB on the bike. Bro lost some much fluid and calories, it’s insane that he was actually able to just finish after that
The tracker shows Lange as having only the second fastest run split today, beaten by an age grouper. Anybody happen to know who that was and what he ran? :D
The commentating team could do with looking how the Tour de France guys do it on ITV4. Granted not much of interest along the route tho. Cut away with some bits in history, previous races etc. keeps it more enjoyable to watch.

Most pros will adopt the diet that suits them most, some people are more tolerant to meat than others, and I’m willing to bet that if they performed better on an omnivorous diet they wouldn’t be veggie. Personally I’m all for the veggie diet ethically, and yes it suits me in many respects health wise even if it has cost me some performance, but it suits some more than others health wise so I’m not going to judge or celebrate other people purely based on an ideology/lifestyle choice over performance.
@colinb8327 I'm not sure but in those 46 years of racing no one has done it faster than a Vegetarian as Patrick got the course record. Given the proportion of Vegan and Vegetarians on earth, it's fair to say that non meat eaters punch above their weight in terms of athletic performance. But I do agree that there is an individual element, and that even if, hypothetically I performed a bit better by eating animal products, I still wouldn't eat animal products.

I think KB showed that despite how good as is he is, you can’t be good at short course and long course and because of that he couldn’t deliver in his main objectives. Next year I’m sure we will see the best him

This is a poor recap, we see nothing of the race except some still pictures, all we get is a bloke reading the race order from the ironman tracker from the side of the road. I've criticised GTN before for this. Mind you the official ironman commentary is worse, PTO is far far better.
Please take notice of the previous comment. Also, ‘the bloke’ you mention happens to be one of the most qualified to commentate on this race. Given the restrictions enforced by the organisers, I like most others, think that James did a great job.

Good thing some athletes made 341 vlogs during the week leading up to the race so they atleast get some income finishing in the bottom half while claiming they have been training hard for the win 👍

Holding the Ironman bike course record (potentially for many years) is a significant achievement and very valuable to sponsors. By sticking it out to finish 18th he gives a massive consolation prize to his supporters. It would be ignorant to think this didn't cross a professional athletes mind. (Or to think a Pro risks his health and T100 performance in a month 'to honour the race'.)

Good thing some athletes made 341 vlogs during the week leading up to the race so they atleast get some income finishing in the bottom half while claiming they have been training hard for the win 👍
I don’t think there’s an Ironman pro that doesn’t train hard. If anything they probably massively overcook themselves.

Is this meant to be a serious commentary? To say something as ignorant as Sam Laidlow only trying to finish so he can get the bike record..give me a break.
Holding the Ironman bike course record (potentially for many years) is a significant achievement and very valuable to sponsors. By sticking it out to finish 18th he gives a massive consolation prize to his supporters. It would be ignorant to think this didn't cross a professional athletes mind. (Or to think a Pro risks his health and T100 performance in a month 'to honour the race'.)
That bike record could stand for a good while, conditions pretty perfect with no wind.

Sam finished to honour the fact he was the reigning IM World Champion, that's a champion mindset.
