LATE COMMENT: We had a family named Harper and they owned a campground called Harper Valley. It was actually named a year or two before the song. And yes, they were involved with the PTA.
Grew up with this song. Had a fan crush on her as a child. Late 70's saw a short lived sitcom by the same name starring Barbara Eden and George Goebel.
For a short while it was a tv show with Barbara Eden with the same name. The show was on tv in 1981-1982. Plus this is one of my favorites songs. A oldie but a goodie.
Man I'm a metal head and I love this miss STORYTIME songs shes a great singer loved her style too very cool need to do JUICE Newton SONG QUEEN OF HEARTS
they actually made an early 80's sitcome based on this song,,,it stared barbara eden {i dream of jeannie[} and fannie flagg..i think it aired for 2 to 3 years,, if you hav'ent yet,i also recommend ode to billy jo by bobbie gentry that was around the same era as this song.
Can't knock her for not acting up more. It was live, a big opportunity to get exposure, more important to nail the vocals. This TV performance is equal to, even more sassy, than the studio recording.
I can't remember who is on guitar, if you're referring to the slide guitar but it's definitely Tom. He was more of a rhythm guitar player. And the guy next to her on set looks nothing like him. Guess I'll pick a live video of his after my upcoming reaction.
@@samzilla1281 I know the guitarist we see in the video is not Tom. The hairline is a dead giveaway. Tom did not have that widow's peak. I have one myself so I notice these things. I think I was referring to the record that was all over the radio in 1968 but now I am not sure where I got that info from.
@@samzilla1281 Not snarky at all. I definitely did not take it that way. I am not certain of the details now, but I read someplace that the songwriter played guitar on the recording, And that would be Tom T. I should have been more clear in what I was saying. Referring to the song playing on the radio was in retrospect not at all clear.
Tom T Hall recorded a demo of this, which I've heard. After this version was recorded, he didn't record a full version. He never wanted to compete for radio airtime with someone else's version of his songs. Another example came in the mid 90s. He has a song on his album that was intended to be a single. Alan Jackson recorded it on a covers album and decided to release it as a single. Tom released a different song. 😜
There are several references in this song that younger listeners may not catch. One is the reference to Peyton Place, which was a 1957 film, and a 1960s nighttime drama, that dealt with adult issues and was quite controversial. Another is "Sock it to me," which was a gag punch line from the hit comedy show Laugh In, which famously even got President Nixon to appear and say the line.
Hi Maggie, I've been away for awhile. Why do you have two RUclips channels (Maggie Renee and Maggie Renee Reacts)? You had 220K subscribers with your fist channel.
They actually made a movie based on this song starring Barbara Eden (I Dream of Jeannie)
My mum used to crank this in the car when I was a kid. Good on ya Mum!

One of my favourite songs growing up...and still one of the best.

Did you see the mid 1960's hairstyle and Go-Go boots she was wearing? This must have been the Porter Wagoner show.
Such a classic! Steel magnolias are always experts at smiling while putting you in your place. 😜✌🏻
Great song, it’s a single mother getting back at the PTA getting into her shit, when they were deep in their own…
I love when you do country

For another excellent storytelling country/pop hit, have you heard Bobby Gentry's "Ode to Billie Joe"? Definitely a must-hear.
This was all over the radio in 1968. The guitar player is I believe Tom T Hall who wrote the song. 😜

I apologize if I came off as overly snarky. I realized after I hit send that I should have been more careful with my words.
I just checked on a couple of websites. On the album the Dobro/guitar was played by Jerry Kennedy

There is something about you that is so comforting. I wish I could take voice lessons from you.
You are one of the few things that make smile on a daily basis Miss Maggie
It's a fun song. And somehow I knew you'd love the sass lol. Great job!

You always make my day better, you’re so amazing!
If you love the song, you should watch the movie. :)

you need to watch the movie based on this song.
I would recommend George Jones "He Stop Loving Her Today"
🙌😜

That involved some strike related drama where Maggie had to fight to keep from losing her channel.
😜😜😜
Do CCR Tombstone shadow
This song should be performed in churches. Hypocrisy is a sin.
