@@chickenflavor9880 That's a great way of putting it. The movies almost go beyond what is generally considered a movie and move right into some other universe where the usual rules of film criticism and scholarship have to be reworked to even grasp the scale of what Kubrick accomplished. That may sound like hyperbole. But I can't think of any other filmmaker who did with the art form what Kubrick did.

I saw "Clockwork Orange" when it came out. I sat with two sci-fi writers, one extremely famous and one rather obscure. When the film ended we all sat in total silence for about 10 minutes, just trying to digest what we'd seen. Probably the most mind boggling film ever. I still don't totally understand all the ideas that make up this film but I am sure it's one of the greatest ever made.

That sense of foreboding that hits you immediately is also present in the shining but that image of Alex is just... gives me shivers. You would think Kubrick would shoot the head shaving scene in Full Metal Jacket first, but he actually did it last. He made the actors grow back their hair, then he shaved it off again for the opening credits. You can see that all the characters look absolutely miserable, (which is expected for going to Vietnam in the context of the film), but it makes me wonder how much of that was acting, and how much was the actors actually being upset about losing their hair again lol

It sounds like someone got a cheap synth for their DAW but couldn't play keyboards so they just plonked along one key at a time, adding in some creepy special fx from a patch every now and then. Hard to believe that this is the same Carlos/Elkind who did the soundtrack for A Clockwork Orange.

Fear and Desire was so bad that Kubrick did not want anyone to see it. Killer's Kiss was not much better. He hit his stride with The Killing. James Harris really helped him as a producer, plus Lucien Ballard was a good cinematographer. Paths of Glory was his breakthrough, a really well directed film in every way. After A Clockwork Orange, his films are not worth watching.

      - "...not worth watching.
" I beg to differ; that's going too far. But then I am a Kubrick fanatic. I even liked "Eyes Wide Shut" which was panned by many critics and most moviegoers. I would agree that his high point was 2001 with ACO a VERY close second (in my opinion). I think the most overrated was Barry Lyndon, due to the flawed novel he worked with (an unlikable antihero and equally unlikable actor playing him).
