this is awesome music back in the 70's i was 15 ,16 waw you did not need drugs to get high the music will do and if you didn't fell in love you'll never will this kind of music is immortal they don't make them like this anymore what a pity thanks to RUclips
My favorite version of this great song. You can't beat the great BST horns plus Jimmy Vivinos outstanding guitar playing. The best I've ever heard from Al.
My wife said this album was really important to her growing up as a teen. She still has the album, Child is father to the man. She also loved I can't quit her. Great stuff.she obtained this l.p. at about 14.
Every version I have ever heard of this song has been outstanding, pure class, heartwrenching. There must be something about Al Kooper's brilliant songwriting here that inspires people into giving the performance of their lives.
Kooper is the real deal, and Soul of a Man has got to be one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. If you can get your hands on this classic double CD, get it!
....Al , What a Run Of allstars ! This is no exception ! You are what makes Rock and Roll ! Unique and unconditional , in this old heads humble opinion
Al Kooper was the original singer of Blood Sweat & Tears before they got really big. He was thrown out and Canadian David Clayton Thomas replaced him then BS&T got really big.
I think this Live version is much hotter and better than the original BS&T studio track!, even though the original version has some great production effects, string arrangements, and was so much a part of my adolescent development when I was about 15 yrs old that it was burned into my brain! Al Kooper, you had so much for your vision! You have so much heartfelt soul to write a song such as this..., plus you were great friends with and played with the great Michael Bloomfield. This is a wonderful performance on guitar from Steve Katz as well. Also a bit hotter than the original! Just Wonderful!!!!!!!
Those were great days, my friend. We were on the magic carpet and these guys were the captain, co-captain, navigator, and the rest of the flight crew. We flew to amazing places. I still have the post cards!
Mrs Melissa ward here. . This album was everything to me as a young teen. Koopers, voice In child is father to the man was outstanding. Great album. .this live version is really something.
I just listened to Amy Winehouse' version of this song, and I'm going to have to say "Well, son, back in my day, we knew what real music was". Yup, that's my age showing. I'm still saying Kooper is a great singer and musician.
Saw BST with Al Kooper do the whole first album "Child is Father to the man." I met Al and we talk about this album. I went to Berklee School of Music in Boston ( Drummer) and was a manager for ASCAP. Great Days, Great music, and great women back in the day. Some times "Old-School" is the best school. Can you dig it? I knew that you could-------
+Louis Stabler It never stops to amaze me how colour comes crawling in. Music is universal, has not one colour but is like a rainbow, there is no race nor political view involved, but available to everyone.
I had a black man in Google+ who told me white people can't sing the blues. That they tried stealing it from them. I believe there's a song called a white man can sing the blues, but can't remember by who..
Fantastic live version, expected no less from Mr Kooper! This was a staple on KSHE radio in St. Louis back in the late 60s and early 70s. A classic. NMB
Al Kooer.the real first lead singer and the very best. Child is father to the man lp. Amazing talent. Most people always say oh David Clayton Thomas. Well Al made this way before him,the original. Melissa Ward here
Great version of the original song from the first BS and T album. It reminds me of how much better Kooper's BS and T was than the commercial sell-out they became after they booted Kooper out.
So I have a playlist called 'Stand the hairs up' meaning on the back of my neck and on my arms. But this version is the only song that stood the hairs up on my chest from my belly button to my neck. Wicked guitar playing starting at 6:12. Hairs started going up at 6:34
This cut is from the 2-CD set 'Soul of a Man' (recored at NYC's Bottom Line). Kooper uses 3 basic line-ups - The Blues Project, Child is Father to the Man and the Rekooperators. On this track it's the Child... line-up, with Jimmy Vivino (gtr.), Will Lee (bs.), Anton Fig (drums), horns by Randy Brecker, Fred Lipsius, Tom 'Bones' Malone and Lew Solof. 'Texas' Jim Fiedler (original BS&T) guests on bass. Vivino, Lipsius and Kooper (organ) do the solos. Overall it's a great set of great tunes.
Ok - granted I was only 14 on that Saturday in 1967, and definitely not on anything (my dad took us), but I could swear that we saw Al with the Blues Project - and then he introduced his new band - BS&T a couple of hours later. I can't say I heard this song, but I remember *someone* introducing a new band - and of all the folks there, only Al was on twice. It was a stripped down, hornless version - but it had to have been introduced as BS&T because my dad bought the album as soon as it was available. I have always loved Kooper's voice - As the Years go passing by was only surpassed for me by Gary.
Que gran época cuando la música si reunía todos atributos como tal y esta canción sigue siendo una joya en la actualidad qué sentimiento tan profundo... 👌✌️🖐️🖐️
+Jon Koelker Al Kooper is a force of nature and so it was a bad move to replace him. To me he means a lot, sort of the founder of my taste in music, grew up with BS&T music and I have been a Bluessister for ever.....
I agree with you a thousand percent, but Kooper didn't have much of a voice. Although Kooper was a great producer and band leader, the band made a lot more money with DCT, who I never liked.
personality aside, Clayton had powerful distinctive vocals that cut thru the noise on AM airwaves, resulting in massive sales of bst 2 and a grammy. i know of the two camps. rock and roll vs bar mitzvah soul. I like both equally
Blood Sweat and tears i loved that album. Al also wrote "This Diamond Ring" for Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Super session was so ahead of it's time. Such great musicians on one album.
Excelente concierto, ahí están sus mejores canciones de uno de los famoso grupo, Blood, Sweat & Tears (sangre , sudor y lagrimas) de Jon Koelker Al Kooper .
i first saw Al in Columbus OH in 1969 or 70, freakin awesome. Then is West Los Angeles in the early 90,s. Then we had the Northridge quake of 94 and he said he'd never come back. Bummer. I hate NY but love the crap out of Al what cha gonna do???

One of the greatest songs EVER.
Yes it is
From the ONLY good BST album. This knocked my socks straight off back when I first heard it.
Greatest love song in history. Al's got so much soul.

The Child is Father to the Man is one of the Greatest Albums Evahh it was Al's signature album with His Original lineup of BS&T

My favorite album of all time.

This is the best live and the best version of this song.
No other singer can soul this one, except Al itself
Donny Hathaway's live version is smooth and powerful, I honestly think he did better vocally but I love Al's arrangement on this live version.
Al at his best....you'll never find a better version of this....I've been a fan of this man since the 60's
A Classic, 26 years after the original...with Koop's vocals soulful.
A brilliant piece of music from one of - maybe THE- greatest albums of all time. I do love it so.
Oh my gosh...no words. This is one of my all time favorite songs...full of heart.

True! There was a contract dispute with Kooper. Steve Katz didn't like the contract and walked out on the performance last minute
