'Bree-more' 😄 - Brem-muh. I only know because I used to work with the old boys at Salisbury who used to work over that road.
Great video Paul & Rebecca, I know the line (what's left of it anyway) quite well and can give you a little more information on both the Railway Hotel in Fordingbridge, and the station at Breamore (actually pronounced Bremmer for accuracy).
Fun fact:
Verwood to Bornemouth took 20 minutes at most in 1880.
Verwood to Bornemouth takes 60 minutes at least in 2021.
R.
Another great video, and a local one for me. Rumour has is that occasionally squaddies got off the train at Alderholt Station asking for directions to the barracks, so it's alleged that it was renamed to Daggons Road Station to avoid some confusion with Aldershot.
My great grand-aunt ran the Station Hotel in Verwood (now The Albion) at the time of WW1. My grandmother also worked there and rumour has it that she met my grandfather, who was stationed at Blandford, when he used to march his troops past the pub
I’m from Downton originally, nice to see you back there, currently living between Breamore & Fordingbridge stations you visited, would have been great to bump into you 2 if I’d known you were in the area, been binge watching your back catalogue of videos for a fair while now, thanks again, a few bits I don’t know about the history of the line in this one.
Cheers Sparky
I like Rebecca's new 'do'!
I dont she looks better Brunette
Needs a top stylist,
I just like Rebecca. Any colour except the red
As a lifelong railway enthusiast I find these explorations of yours fascinating ,particularly when they cover lines that I either travelled on or was aware of e.g. the S & D, the Waverley route plus others. I left the U.K in 1973 dismayed at the destruction of the railways & other things for South Africa which still had a highly functioning predominantly steam loco. worked system only to see the same pattern repeated here from the late 1980’s onward. Alantunbridge
National fuel shortage? No, a national surplus of panic buyers! There was never a shortage.
There was a shortage at the pumps caused by a slump in supply from BP. BP stated that their lack of drivers resulted in a reduced supply. The knock on effect and resultant panic buying did indeed, not help.
@@pwhitewick There was an inconsequential number of garages affected in total, about 100, Out of over 8,000. Barely 1% of garages. But once the press reported on it and at least half the public listen to half the story they are out there filling carrier bags with fuel!
@@hairyairey 1% of the nations fuel is a significant amount!
@@pwhitewick Only if 100% of fuel is sold every day! Do you really think we run our garages low every day? There is always slack in the system, until the press get involved. Garages running out of fuel because of late deliveries is a regular occurence. But every town has more than one supplier available.
@@hairyairey Originally started by the media (BBC) on an otherwise slow news day.
Thanks for all the interesting and informative stuff on your channel. As someone else has pointed out, the locals call it “Bremmer”.
Have you found any remains of the tunnel between Alderbury and Downton? I believe it was used for landfill over 40 years ago.
most enjoyable......both from the old railway perspective and the lovely Rebecca.....ooohh those leggings. 😅 . Well done 👍 both.
If you ever come to the Stanhope, Consett area, give our channel a shout, we know loads about that area :)
Really enjoyed this one. When I was a nipper [I'm old now], our family got the train from Andover to Weymouth [for a very wet week in a little caravan] and here's the itinerary. Andover>Salisbury / Salisbury>Poole / Poole>Weymouth. Salisbury>Poole can only be the route you are featuring today.
Ah man, that canopy at Breamore Station is beautiful!
Was a real treat seeing that place
@@pwhitewick It looked incredibly peaceful!
It’s a beautiful rare station building that’s been wonderfully preserved 😍
Nice haircut Rebecca! Great video! Thank you for taking the time. Enjoyed much.
Your videos help me, not only to know better about some of the dismantled railways that I have visited, you two bring a sense of me getting away from the stress humdrum of life for those valuable 15 minutes or so, to which I heartily thank you. Again a lovely video.
Love the blonde bob! Oh and Braemore!
By the way , talking of dirty tricks, tried to get time table for Birmingham GWR Broad St. No time available. Same company which owned rail enquiries ran the Franchise to New Street .. Is Hurn still an hotel?
Another high quality and informative video from you guys. Also well researched, with the filled in cutting, etc. Keep up the high class productions.
Rebecca has so many hair styles 🤣
You guys rock love the vids ,and looking good in shiny leggings Rebecca 👌
I have family members that live in Verwood near the Albion. I must take a look at that at some point!
Who is that lovely blonde you are with 😂😂..!
Great video your getting very close to West dorset lol Rebecca love the blonde suits u. I went blond to hide going grey and now could not be another colour lol if you ever get to do lyme or bridport disused railways, let me know and I'll give u both a ride in my Audi r8 v10 spyder if ud like? Lol x
The next part you guys need to do is from Hamworthy to Wimborne on the Castleman Trailway , And from Poole to Blandford on North Dorset Trailway !
Castleman is definitely getting closer....
😁 can’t wait,
@@pwhitewick well as you started this one at Verwood, you need to start the Castleman at Ringwood, onto West Moors, Wimborne, Broadstone and Hamworthy.
Sad to hear of the accident last night in that area, glad it wasn't a head on collision or it would've been much worse.
The token. A staff or tablet, maybe?
The widowmaker ?
A bit of a coincidence, since it mentioned an historic train crash at a junction in the Salisbury area, in a similar situation where one train hits the side of another one.
@@NOWThatsRichyNow they are blaming it on low adhesion and the train skidding. Leaves on the line?- I bet the Downton line had its trees kept pruned to stop that sort of thing.
My Mother's family is from Breamore, there's a whole lot of them in the graveyard and on the war memorials, and the locals pronounce it Bremmer!
People from Uttoxeter pronounce it "Utchutta"
People from Wilnecote pronounce it "Wincut"
People from Leicester pronounce it "less-tar"
and so on and so on.....
Great video. My childhood (90's) was spent in Moot Lane, Downton. I grew up with stories of the line from elderly neighbours. It had always captivated my imagination and in adulthood researched it heavily. In fact the reason I found your channel was the old Tunnel video. Thank you for the great content and hard work. Stay safe.
It’s Sunday! You guys and zero 🥰
Love the Mr Zero
Another packed video. Be good to have a geo physical survey on that tunnel in true Time Team style.
That's a deeeeeeep dig Bob
Instead of Token, it may have been a Staff or a Tablet.
Checking the OS map, most of it's not a right of way, or permissive - it's clearly marked as a path on the Landranger, but NOT marked as permissive on the Explorer scale - until you get to the Fordingbridge-Breamore part of the line, and some parts north of there to Salisbury...
Me, I take it that if I'm sticking to the Countryside Code, not wrecking the place, alarming the livestock, etc - then I can go anywhere.
Thank you both for making this happen. I particularly liked the old station, beautiful!
Your getting on to almost 400 abandoned stations visited! Another lovely and interesting tour!
Your new hair style suits you massively Rebecca
10:10 Thinking about that tunnel, buried for 60 years... really captures my imagination
The line closed 57 years ago, so would have been buried a bit more recently than 80 years ago 👍🏼
@@160384Stig My math bad, unless they buried it while it was still in use
Rebecca. We LOVE your new hairdo!!!
Very smart indeed!
I must have driven under at least one of those road bridges on holidays etc to the west country in pre motorway days or exploring the area generally. fordingbridge and verwood could find a rail connection useful, especially those housing estates that have been built
Thank you Paul and Rebecca I work in Verwood I’m actually pick up one of my schoolchildren from Albion Way brilliant video just waiting for you two to do the Ringwood Ashley Heath Westmoors branch Line
You should look at the Buckingham steam Railway Museum
excellent video 👍love the done up station shame this railway come to an end was it because of lack of use that it closed 🤔
Guys let me know when your in south/west Dorset, would love to join you
hi again paul and rebecca , another super cool video , really nice places again as always , well done and thank you so much for all you do on these videos 😃
Please explain how in one shot you are holding your arm out to us, as if we are a camera in your hand ... and MAGICALLY THEN we see you hiking with both arms swaying with no camera? That is quite an optical illusion, but I see lots of vloggers do this and it seems so odd in the cutting. Like those bad studio cuts in the 1930s where an actor is smiling in closeup, but not in the next two shot ... or MLB mashups edited only for the video clip with no respect for anything the audio has to say ... cutting everything off in mid-sen...
Yes, what did I hear on the news today, train accident in Salisbury - hope the passengers in the carriages are OK plus staff ! Good video with the history .....
They didn't? Oh! Well! Okay then.. now I feel so wrongded for watching.🤔 jk😄
But it's a great video, and you two are great and your channel has grown and gotten so much better.
Happy Sunday Paul and Becka!
Beautifully restored stations on that line, it appears! Lovely video, Paul and Rebecca!
Beautiful day And great vlog. Very interesting. Most enjoyable.. Sad about the drownings though. Thank you for all your research
Really enjoyed that thanks. Some lovely countryside. Enjoying the history. Thanks for taking me along. Please stay safe and take care
Hi Paul and the Lovely Rebecca, as ever, a great video from you both. Thank you 🙏
Another brilliant video. :) Some very interesting stories as well.
Another great video! Always enjoy it when you do an Every Disused Station video!
Ah, "my" local railway, the Salisbury & Dorset Junc Rly! Opened 1866, closed 1964, surviving for only 98 years. At its southernmost point it had a junction with Castleman's Southampton & Dorchester Rly at West Moors, the northern end joined the Salisbury to Southampton Rly, trains then running on those metals to terminate at Salisbury station in a bay. Earlier in the mid-1840s a scheme to link the Dorset coast with Bristol and the Midlands was mooted. The first was the Salisbury & Dorsetshire Railway, announced in 1844 but never built. The Salisbury & Dorset Junc Rly (built 1866) was sadly just the stump of this first ambitious railway and linking the two LSWR main routes. A little story, the elderly couple still living, after the lines closure, at Daggons Road station (Alderholt), the lady used to catch the train to Fordingbridge of an evening to buy fish & chips then returning on the last train; she was often the only person on it! All the gas lamps were shut off after the last train had left but on a very rough night they would blow out and the station would be in darkness. Daggons Road stn was built after the opening of the railway, some 10 years later. By the way chaps - Breamore, a slightly odd name, which, by the locals (who know) is pronounced "Bremmer" - so there we are, mispronounce it at your peril.
Great little video, I know your first stop very well, the Albion pub at Verwood, with the old bridge next to it, some years ago, we often stayed at the nearby campsite, just a few yards to the west, you might even have walked by it!
Both very informative and interesting. Paul, you need to add that no graphics were harmed in the making of this video!
Tried to walk the Breamore path from Fordingbridge to Breamore station today but it’s really overgrown with stinging nettles. A real shame. How far is the buried tunnel from the old downton station?
Really enjoyed this vlog! And so much to discover yet, so looking forward to the next one!
Another great video, but it’s pretty obvious these video’s are an excuse for a pub crawl…..🙄🙄🙄😂😂😂
Interesting - Thank you & have a nice trip at the end 😉🚂🚂🚂
Another great video always makes my Monday morning coffee break better!
Bournemouth - Ringwood and Wimborne to Ringwood Please sir Great Vids
the comedy bit at the start has me thinking that you could do a blooper reel in case you’re in need of a holiday or have to reupload a video due to something happening like this weekend’s train accident. surely blown takes, funny trips and stumbles, and other things happen.
The Railway Hotel at Fordingbridge has bedrooms named, and decorated, in the style of famous express trains such as Orient Express, etc. And the beer is good.
How funny, i live in Salisbury, have road on my bike down that path, accessing via Oddstock. Now it makes sense what it was :-)
Great vid. I worked near Blandford so it's reasonably familiar. Sort of recognized the hedgerows!
walking abandoned railways is a great pastime. Check out Merthyr tunnel
Boston has a dirt rail trail called reformatory branch that runs between Boston and Concord on former B&M RR. It is on MBTA oldest commuter system in USA
Super local one for me! Living near the junction you mentioned between both disused lines 😅
You may enjoy watching my Train Simulator animation of the line here: ruclips.net/video/BUqy8kAhD_o/видео.html
Not sure, but I think the token was called a 'staff'. (Leather trousers. Mmm!) :-)
Hey, saw my surname atop the Railway Hotel - very cool :-) (Eldridge, that is hehe)
As a kid I helped restore Four Marks Station on the Watercress Line
Oh no! You missed the wonderful bridge just a bit further north!! If you’re local then it is worth going back to see it!
Coincidentally, Alderbury is what they used to fill the Downton cuttings
Infilling of Downton Tunnel - Highways England's doing? 🤔
Love your videos, keep them coming I look forward to your content.
Lovely part of the country.
Wasn’t Salisbury in the news due a train crash at that junction.
I honestly do love every single one of your videos you guys are truly inspiring
Another great video. On your walks I often wonder how many miles you travel. This one looked quite lengthy.
I'm a shocked that a woman could actually enjoy this stuff, but Rebecca actually seems to more than tolerate it.
My cousin lived yards from the old track bed at Alderbury
The fences on top of that bridge at the end look new as well. Have National Highways indulged in some repair work instead of infilling or demolition?
Ha... Good call. Not sure, but as you say it has certainly been tidied.
Great local video of the abandoned line to Salisbury.
Love that one of the stations has been restored.
Breamore is definitely pronounced ‘Bremmer’ 👍
Good informative video as usual. Is the date on the bridge not a crack detector placed across a existing crack in the brickwork to detect movement . I live near a railway bridge that as several those rendered dates on they sometimes use a strip of glass superglued across a crack which crack under stress.
Are you going to cover Ringwood and the Castlemans trail? I used to love walking the old railway when I lived there
We're in the process of filming it, we've made it halfway to Ringwood from Poole, just need to film the rest to Brockenhurst
I had no idea there was a railway from Salisbury to Downton, very interesting.
Great video guys, so look forward to seeing the.
Great video again guys, wonderfully put five as usual..
Just behind the One Stop on Horton Rd,Three legged Cross, there's an abandoned platform on the rail trail, not sure if you missed it or maybe it wasn't even a station?
Thank you. Definitely no station there... .keen to know the gps ref as I can't see a one stop!
@@pwhitewick it's right where the old line crosses Horton Rd.
@@DomingoDeSantaClara very odd. Maybe Google is out of date.
@@pwhitewick approx halfway between the A31 and Woolsbridge and opposite Moors Valley country park, its deffo on G earth.
50°50'28"N 1°50'21"W • just figured out how to get coords 😉
I think "staff" is the word you were looking for. Hope this helps!
I live in Norfolk where there are lots of disused railways to explore some have been overlaid with roads others turned into footpaths and cycle ways however some require a bit of detective work to follow
Hi you two I loved this vid very well filmed (By two lovely presenters) and very informative as always. Id love you two to come to Chesterfield and do what's left of the old GCR Chesterfield loop as there is loads of it and nearly (not all) of it and it's walkable as far as Rother Valley country park. I would love to do the walk as a guest.
You and me both.
What interesting lives you both have, thank you for a very interesting video from NZ
I remember when the line was in use, and watched it get torn up. I use to live in Alderholt, was 6 years old when it closed
Really well researched as ever 👍🏻 is Braemore station now a house? I was surprised that they’d let people sit on the platform if it was…
Great video. Been to Breamore several times but never walked as far north as you did. Awesome
Wondered whether one of those x-ray Detectors mayt Hel in these buried guess areas ??
Another great video - looking forward to the next one..keep em coming.
If I were you son I would let your lady do a bit more of the talking as she is 1 very intellegent, and 2 very able to verbally articulate the local info.
have you ever walked thw wirral way west kirby to hooton including hadlow road station
Shout out for the background music Xx
Often top of my list of priorities
@@pwhitewick very professional Xx
Ever wondered IF all the Station Roads were as ONE ¿?
