It is literally my favorite film. The only thing I have to add, is that for me, the ending montage is so tragic, because Alexandria forgets all the pain Roy went through due to his accident, and then we're shown stunt after stunt from that era of film. How many were injured, even killed, for simple entertainment? Without anyone even stopping to consider it. Either way, few movies get me to cry, the Fall gets me crying several times every viewing.
Just rewatched it yesterday for the 3rd time, and today LSOO makes this video....A great smile of happyness took shape at my face. Thanks and keep up with your amazing insight.Cheers
Fabulous question THE Salient Question to launch the process of healing. I would be The Last Cave Painter - the bad ass shaman who leads young boys through the transformation to adulthood and the ability to uncover his own shadow so that it is not projected upon others....to own it and digest it and integrate into himself...and therethrough end domestic violence and racism and even war ....and elevate justice and compassion to the driving values of individual fathers and eventually society.... That is who I would be in the rewrite.
Possibly one of the sweetest films ever made. I don't think that is a quality that is necessarily lauded in film, especially if they are seen to be great. But at its center is so golden, so genuine. After all the great landscapes and costumes and rip-roaring adventure, the most riveting scene is a man and a young girl in a hospital room, saving each other's small, but precious lives. I have such a special place in my heart for this one, I will always treasure it.

One of my favorite films, and one too little talked about, and when it is too often shallowly. Thanks for this great video essay, though. You did the film justice, getting to its heart.
Visited Rajasthan in 2009. Jaipur is one of the most gorgeous cities I have ever seen and the Planetarium is a work of wonder. Also saw the Taj Mahal at dawn, the Amber Fort and the beautiful structures in Rajasthan.. Amazing architecture in India. STUNNING.
i 'm commenting before watching the video when i finish, i'll edit it and give my opinion *edit* : sometimes we create heroes because we need heroes and sometimes we find hope because we need hope , and what better to heal a broken a heart than a distracted mind? and i guess that's the role of Alexandria in this movie she is introduced as an element to distract his mind but as the story unfolds we can see clearly that she is that element who brings hope by replacing the dark feelings in that man's heart by replacing it with new ones full of joy. she brings that feeling of being loved, that feeling that there's someone who still cares, there's someone who who needs us and that my friends is true love.
Thank you. I can't even begin to express what I feel. All your videos are beautiful and they fill my life with purpose. Every time I watch a new video from you It's like it leaps into the corners of my minds and somersaults into my emotions and makes a big mess. I break apart and cry like a child. I want to thank you for not only analyzing movies but also giving us lessons that will help us for the rest of our lifes. Your videos have helped me get closer to finding myself. I still have a long way to go but you make it easier. You're sensible and kind and you care. You're a good man.
You expressed words that are in my soul also. i found this channel about 6 months ago and it has pulled me from a very deep depression and I am now a Patron. You are so appreciated, Tom!
Finally a movie showcasing true innocence and cluelessness of children. I saw critics that were complaining that the kid seems slow, confused and having juvenile dialogue that got on their nerves and rated this movie low because of it, which are the dumbest critics ever. Maybe because most movies they used to have children talking and think like adults, having mature conversation with adults even swearing. Maybe these critics themselves talked like rocket scientists when they were kids. I seriously hate these pretentiously "cool" people.
This film is underrated, because it's not for everyone=) It is included in my personal list of my most favorite films of all times (there are not so many movies in this list by the way, in spite of the fact I watch different films very often). I personally have some acquaintances who watched this film and consider it to be some senseless shit.
Pasajero De La Brújula : both my favorites as well. What a combination of insights that burrow into your soul. Symphonies from true masters of their craft.
I was thinking about watching this story for a while, but seemed to put it off. Then I saw that you released a video on it and so I finally decided to watch the story first lol... that's a testament to what your channel has become! This movie is such an underrated masterpiece and essential viewing for each and every person, especially those going through extremely difficult times and your video about it should be included in the movie's DVD set. Thank you!
tears of joy and redemption. reminding me, saving me with the power and beauty of story and affirming why I am a writer. stories confirm of our humanity. how we are all connected and we are all one.
Hopefully - many decades from now - after a long, challenging, purposeful, and rewarding life - I hope that the white light tunnel sequence of my life flashing before your eyes is somehow narrated by Tom. With his enchanting voice and skillful eye for meaningful framing - Tom continues to expertly curate the ups and downs and twists and turns of any story into thoughtful, honest, and heart-piercingly touching analyses of consciousness, human connection, and the relationship of one's self with their self. Beautiful. Thank you, Tom.

It's based on the screenplay of the 1981 Bulgarian film "Yo Ho Ho" by Valeri Petrov. Virtually the same story (with minor differences in context but not in structure, e.g. they were on a ship and the child was a boy), but of course with the stunning visuals that the old Bulgarian movie didn't have. However, "Yo Ho Ho" compensated by exaggerating the lack of realistic, quality visuals in contrast to the imaginative story, making it funny and forcing the viewer to think as a child (who may be hearing common seagulls, but believe them to be albatrosses off the coast of Jamaica). "The Fall" is a very different kind of experience, very majestic and dreamlike. I loved them both! A quote from "Yo Ho Ho": "I believe people to be at their best character up until 10 years of age. After that they just go downhill."
Underrated, beautiful and.magical film. They dont make movies like this anymore. I became very emotional since I backpacked to India and like Roy and Alexandria, my last day in India was spent at the same fort featured in the film~ Jodhpur . The soundtrack and the film played in my mind and I started crying. Cant believe this film was filmed 14 years ago.
I watched this movie just last night, out of the blue, and at the end I thought of you and what you would have to say. Today I came to see what you've been working on and I'm amazed to see you were already on it. I should've known :)
I LOVE this movie so much! So visual & breathtaking & epic, but a truly poetic piece of storytelling & plot so deeply annihilating you won't stop bawling til the last credits roll.
Mere coincidence, I only recently watched The Fall... Loved it!!! the essence of the movie stays forever... filmmaker Tarsem Singh combines reality and fiction to give a poetic convergence in the third act and delivers a spectacular narrative. Always a fan of LSOO, your narration quality is perfect for the philosophical underlying of movies... Thank You! Hope to see more
I studiedthis film in film school many years ago. I wanna say 2007 or so. This brought a truly new perspective on it. Literally have tears in my eyes. I'm so glad the story had a happy ending. We all need happy endings.
I have watched this movie 14-15 years ago for the first time. Have rewatched it several times since. There are so many hidden symbolism in the movie. Everytime I rewatch it, I see something new. Example: In you video, go to 7:06 and watch that scene in movie. You will find a reference to Freud's Oedipus if you look closely. (Hint: kiss)
i was deleting many youtube channels to clean my subscriptions to have more quality content and i knew that this channel has great quality and at the same time really educational videos. it feels great to see your videos on subfeed again!
I'd dismissed Tarsen Singh after seeing such fare as The Cell and Immortals . . .but this film was beautiful, and a swift reminder that you never know what a director can bring to an individual project. Always give the benefit of the doubt!
@@MDJ5 It was visually resplendent - I particularly like the part where the dream baddie is revealed and he gets up off his throne and takes the decor with him - but I weren't fond of the actual story. It's been a while since I seen it tho so . . . benefit of the doubt
The Cell was magnificent for it's time. Immortals lacked a good deal, but the visuals were excellent. Plus, an emerging Henry Cavill and the lovely, Luke Evans? Yes, please.
I'm happy to see someone talk about this film. I found it by happenstance years ago and have been in love with it ever since. It's hard for me to convince friends to watch it, but thanks to you I now have a way to convince them.
This is the second video of yours I've watched without having seen the movie in question, because of how beautifully you craft your videos and arguments! I will probably watch this movie eventually, but your analysis is inspiring enough for me to take amazing lessons from it!!
I have be very lucky to have visited quite a few of the filming locations of this movie, so few films have done such an excellent job portraying the pure beauty of these places
The fall is one of my all time favourite films. I am SO happy my favourite video essayist (you) has given it some of the recognition it desperately deserves!!
'You trying to save my soul', the most subtle and deep meaning scene in the film. It just shows mental state of Roy, he is looking for someone he can care for, someone who can save him and over all of that the innocence of Alexanderia.
Your one of the greatest narrator on RUclips !!! I am a subscriber form a long time ... your explanation on each subject is awesome ...it gave me insight on how a story is formed in the writers mind and the philosophy behind it and how a director delivers it to people .......lots of love India🇮🇳🇮🇳 ❤❤❤
This movie always struck me as an odd duck. It starts so shallow, so simply beautiful and void. But the images reel you in. By the time the end came I remember thinking "who the hell crafted this", because it feels like a dream, with its logic and wonder, yet Pace and Untaru are the real dream, the heart of it all, and it somehow works. Its emotionally sound. Its such a satisfying film...
I am blessed to have been to many of the places, palaces and forts where this was filmed, like in Rajasthan India's cities of Jaipur, Jodphur (Blue City), Jaisalmer & Agra. IT's MORE MAGICAL IN PERSON. WHEN THE FANTASY IS REAL
Omg. I’m bawling!!!! I haven’t even seen the film yet, but I can’t wait now to experience it. I look forward to watching the story unfold with all its beautiful images, childlike wonder, and deeply felt life message.
I like your take on this film! It has a special place in my heart just like many others here in the comments. My initial take away from the film was how storytelling can be used to manipulate others, not just a small child - which I hadn't considered.
Conoci esta película por un proyecto fotográfico de mi hija mayor, quien recreo a Alexandria con mi hija menor. Siempre le ayudo con la indumentaria así que deseaba verla pero no me daba tiempo y cuando por fin lo hice, Dios! Me rompió. Se volvió una de mis favoritas.
Thank you for your beautiful insights. After I finished watching The Fall for the first time, I knew I had just viewed one of the most breathtaking films I may ever see. It is quite an exciting experience to see a great movie- and it's brought to a whole other level when you can also say to yourself..."I have never seen this before.".
I've never seen this film, never heard of it until today, yet just watching your video got me very emotional and has caused me to put this movie towards the top of my "Must Watch" list. Thank you.

This is film is so good that just watching this video essay brought me to tears! This film is one of my favourites, a masterpiece that curated so much about the power of stories and art and nature and hope into a truly dazzling, heartbreaking moving whole. Great video essay too.
Thank you for choosing to make this beautiful video on a movie, which I personally think is one of the greatest movies ever made, I always, always recommend this movie to everyone I know but alas they never listen.
I'm always surprised by how few people know about this fine film. It is wonderfully over the top, but also anchored by a very human story between a man and a girl child. I had a similar relationship with a magical girl. She and I saved each other's lives. Not until the second time did I realize that the story is being told through the child's interpretation of the man's story. It's a very intriguing story device.
a thing i learned from blade runner (both movies), when one dare to get out of the walls he built around his soul to reach another soul and to let another to touch his soul, he is truly a human. now thanks to this video i know that's when you lets someone in, together you can rewrite the story of your life.
What did you think of The Fall? :)

LOVED LOVED LOVED it ,,, timeless, a masterpiece
When did it come out?
My heart broke into pieces when, through tears, Alexandria told Roy, "It's my story too."
You made me cry again.
Right? OMG I'm bawling my eyes out.
I felt the emotion.of sadness and it's beautiful
Yes...
Lol me too
Some people cry when they see true art, some feel ecstatic.

That is who I would be in the rewrite.
So you are a sexist bad asshole....What about young girls becoming women? Dont you care about women?
A bad ass woman who runs with the wolves would be the perfect choice for that vocation....not me.
I imagine Alexandria grew up to become either a novelist or a filmmaker.

i was deleting many youtube channels to clean my subscriptions to have more quality content and i knew that this channel has great quality and at the same time really educational videos. it feels great to see your videos on subfeed again!
I'd dismissed Tarsen Singh after seeing such fare as The Cell and Immortals . . .but this film was beautiful, and a swift reminder that you never know what a director can bring to an individual project. Always give the benefit of the doubt!
I had watched this film solely because Singh directed it. you didn't care for The Cell?
@@MDJ5 It was visually resplendent - I particularly like the part where the dream baddie is revealed and he gets up off his throne and takes the decor with him - but I weren't fond of the actual story. It's been a while since I seen it tho so . . . benefit of the doubt
He just directed Lady Gaga's 911mv
This channel can save my life
2:21 That quote got me into tears, this is humanity.
The fall is one of my all time favourite films. I am SO happy my favourite video essayist (you) has given it some of the recognition it desperately deserves!!
You make, without a doubt, my favorite content on RUclips. Thank you for what you do.
I don’t think I was even aware of this film but it looks beautiful. Love your videos.
'You trying to save my soul', the most subtle and deep meaning scene in the film. It just shows mental state of Roy, he is looking for someone he can care for, someone who can save him and over all of that the innocence of Alexanderia.
Everyone is talking about how the Mr. Rogers trailer brought them to tears, but this video was the one that gave me cheek streaks this week.
Finally! Something for an underrated film! The visuals are spectacular, much like the imaginative story shared by Roy and Alexandria.
Like Stories of Old is my perfect storyteller and I am his perfect listener.
AGREE
This movie always struck me as an odd duck. It starts so shallow, so simply beautiful and void. But the images reel you in. By the time the end came I remember thinking "who the hell crafted this", because it feels like a dream, with its logic and wonder, yet Pace and Untaru are the real dream, the heart of it all, and it somehow works. Its emotionally sound. Its such a satisfying film...
Your outlook always makes me cry. So beautiful.
An amazing triumph of heart and soul of storytelling

I am blessed to have been to many of the places, palaces and forts where this was filmed, like in Rajasthan India's cities of Jaipur, Jodphur (Blue City), Jaisalmer & Agra. IT's MORE MAGICAL IN PERSON. WHEN THE FANTASY IS REAL
I’ve told people about this film for years. It is one of the greats, in my opinion; glad to see others see its value.

This is one of my favorite movies. I fell in love with the story and the characters. Your analysis is just as lovely.
it looks visually stunning
just signed up for MUBI this weekend from your link. 3 movies and loving it so far. !!!
one of my favourites, like a grown-up princess bride
Thank you for choosing to make this beautiful video on a movie, which I personally think is one of the greatest movies ever made, I always, always recommend this movie to everyone I know but alas they never listen.
I'm always surprised by how few people know about this fine film. It is wonderfully over the top, but also anchored by a very human story between a man and a girl child. I had a similar relationship with a magical girl. She and I saved each other's lives.
Not until the second time did I realize that the story is being told through the child's interpretation of the man's story. It's a very intriguing story device.
The edit and his voice. Man. Beautiful.
a thing i learned from blade runner (both movies), when one dare to get out of the walls he built around his soul to reach another soul and to let another to touch his soul, he is truly a human. now thanks to this video i know that's when you lets someone in, together you can rewrite the story of your life.
